I think what you meant to say was that you service the pleasure of your senior leaders. Noonin was spot on. If you want to contribute to this board, then by all means, please do, but make it something useful. I too have a Stratus receiver, and an iPad mini running Fore Flight. Traffic display is still in its infancy, but WX display, and moving map approach plates are the shit. Not so good for overseas yet, but for stateside flying, the SA tools provided are hard to beat. I use for GA flying as well. I have no clue why the USAF is still buying paper charts, when they could fund TIB, or another SAPR class with the savings.

I've flown with both the Garman GDL 39 linked up to a Garmin 696, and an iPad linked up to a Stratus receiver. Both worked great showing "participating" traffic with mode S transponders, but unfortunately that was only about 5 aircraft in all of north Florida and south Alabama. So not very useful because 90% of traffic wasn't displayed. "Non participating" traffic is only displayed if you're equipped with ADS-B in AND out. The FIS-B weather worked great though. And free unlike XM weather.

First off, tell me a couple of those people in the video can even pass the PT test waist measurement. It pisses me off every day to see the airlift they're eating up because they get priority over some of the shit that really needs to move. Always pleases me to see when we crowd their jets with whatever else we can shove on there. That's right, sit down, shut up, and get up close and personal with some pallets or rolling stock for the next few hours you sequin-studded wannabes. Even worse, there's a group of TIB "alumni" traveling around the AOR doing performances as well. Who the hell thought that was a good idea? How about bringing out the actual USAF or Marine Bands from the States?

The thing that kills me about this is that a lot of us have been trying for the last few years to get out, but the AF keeps saying no. On the one hand, leadership can't wait to get rid of us, while on the other, we're too valuable to be let go. I don't know any Capt right now (pilot/rated type) that has any desire to serve past their commitment, and I know quite a few who are actively looking for ways to separate early. Just don't be too peeved if you get what you ask for...

We absolutely do serve at the usefulness of our leaders. The only control we have over our jobs is to check the boxes and play the game. We are a number to our leaders and nothing more. I shudder every time I have to sit through a brief of some O-6 or O-7 telling us how each and every airman personally means the world to them and they would go to hell and back for every single one of us. That's funny considering how few of them take the time to even give a halfway respectful returned salute to a lieutenant. Granted we all volunteer and continue to stay in the job through our own will, we have little control over how long our careers will be. Too much of the military is driven by politicians, not warrior generals.
