Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by Chida,

Is it possible to voluntarily transfer to retired reserve at 20 yrs? I have a guy in my sq who has prior enlisted time (so it’s not a msd retirement). ARPC is telling him he can’t req retirement until he gets 20 yrs, possibly not until his 20 yr letter. If that’s true the earliest he can retire is after attaining 20 yrs: +120 days to receive 20 yr letter +180 days notice =20 yrs & 10 months! Anyone have anecdotal experience with this situation?

  2. Started by OptFire,

Anyone have any info on what UCT is like and more specifically what being a CSO on the C-130 entails? I was recently eliminated from UPT (didn't pass formation in the T-6) but I am being recommended for CSO and considering finding a reserve unit to sponsor me. Are there reserve fighter units that higher back seaters? Any info would be helpful!

  3. Not sure if this is possible but wanted to see if anyone knew- I was hired by an ANG squadron a little over a year ago. FC1 and all of that has been done for some time and was expecting April 1 OTS, then expected July 30 when I didn't get April, and haven't received anything on that. The next dates aren't til October. I would request orders to go work full time at my hiring unit until training, but I currently live in another state, and also have a lease until October, as well as an SO who can't yet leave her job. So my question is- would it be possible for me as an E3 awaiting OTS and UPT dates, to try to get orders/work at the AF Reserve airlift base in my cur…

  5. If I'm on the promotion list as an ANG officer, then prior to pinning-on, transfer to an AFRES billet (i.e. quit the guard and affiliate as a SELRES or PIRR), does AFRC promote me on my effective date (i.e. 7 yrs TIG)? Anyone have a reg reference or personal tale?

  6. Currently coming up on 10 yrs active duty as a B1 WSO. Looking for a change so looking at C-130 posit in ANG for ability to move family closer to home (East coast) among other reasons. Definitely have some questions though. First, if I have 23 months of ADSC left due to signing GI bill over to my kid, so I think I would have to Palace Chase. I figure this is likely in this era of force mgmt but who knows. What's the first step though? Second, or maybe most most importantly, what are the best reasons to go ANG? I mean, I am pursuing for location and a change, but what else makes people so happy about ANG? Seems simple but I just don't know. Is there a commitment to…

  7. Good morning all, First off I apologize if this isn't the right forum for this but I need some advice on how to proceed with my situation. I am currently an AD O-3 with approximately 3 years of flying experience (late-to-rate), and have already been passed over for Major on the initial attempt. To make things more complicated, I am currently at PIT with my graduation date not slated till about Jan-Mar, which will have been passed the board convene date for my second look. If passed over again I will TRY and find a flying job in the civilian sector, but due to my current hours it is making it difficult for me to find a job (TBNT from United through their UMPP). I have…

Has anyony gone to the AFRES national board un sponsored and been given a slot? I am on the sponsorship hunt and have been calling AFRES units all over the nation, with no success. I have a fully completed package that I am trying to get in the right hands of people and they just blow me off. I figure if I can get a slot through the national board, then at least units will return my phone calls and e-mails. It seems like a much selling point saying "yeah I already have a pilot slot all you have to do is let me hang out for a while, realize I am not a D-Bag, and sign the sponsorship papers" I know it is a slim chance but has anyone here done this.

I apologize if this has been asked before, I did a search and couldn’t find anything. Is it possible to go from Active Duty to ANG UPT while I still have time left on my contract? Is something like this treated as a palace chase? I’ve done a little research and couldn’t find anything about it.

  11. Question came up in recent discussion with an old friend and I really didn't have an answer. He's flown charter, skydive aircraft, did the whole CFI thing for a little while, and is now flying CRJs with one of the regionals. On the quest to step up to the majors, he's also been scoping out some of the common foreign employers: Emirates, Korean Air, etc. He's had in mind to apply to a few Guard units as well and was wondering if the idea of working for a foreign company is even allowed while serving. Of course there are many considerations with such an idea: age limit, traveling back and forth overseas, employer's willingness to accommodate Guard commitment, deploymen…

Greetings, I recently just finished MEPS processing for the unit I was hired into. Next is swearing in and getting enlisted then the FC1. When I swear in I know I’ll have a contract to sign. I’m a civilian that received a pilot slot with the OKC ANG and I’d like to get an idea of what the contract will look like before I go swear in. Can anyone give me an idea? Or what it really needs to say? Thanks!

I find myself in an interesting situation. Love my squadron but we are entering a transition. I won't fly the new aircraft for a few years. In the meantime, I would like to go back to UPT or UCT and instruct. Does anyone know of a path for an ANG pilot to do this? Any ideas? With ADOS, MPA, PFI there has to be a way, right? Filling a need with someone willing and able to fly seems like an easy kill to my smooth brain. Any info or ideas would be really helpful.

I got a hold of an Air Force Reserve recruiter and he replied with the following: Thank you for your interest in the Air Force Reserve! At this time there are a very limited number of available vacant positions to become a commissioned officer. Is this true or is he trying to make up his enlisted qouta?

I posted a similar thread over on the general forum (see below) but in light of new info I wanted to post it here. We are being told that AFRC, and AFRC alone has interpreted the following JTR paragraph 0203 "Per diem allowance rates are based on the TDY location, stopover point, or other authorized official duty points, but not on lodging location. Ordinarily per diem is based on a travellers TDY location at 2400 hours (midnight)" as meaning that if we are on an out and back from Ramstein to say, Kandahar, if we cross midnight while enroute to Kandahar/Bagram, etc or while on the ground at Kandahar that we get Kandahar per diem even though we are returning to Ramstein…

As the title suggest, is there best way to find available flying AGR positions? Just call the units? I read the discussion of ART positions switching to AGR positions so it seems like there "should" be more AGR spots available. Seeing as how I'm still learning Air Force-isms, I'm not for sure where exactly to look or who to talk to. 8 of my 13 years flying in the Navy has been working in the reserve world which makes me want to find an AGR spot to keep the reserve vibe going, just having a helluva time finding said AGR spots!

I understand that an Air National Guard member isn't a veteran and isn't entitled to Veteran benefits unless they complete 20 years of service or are called to active duty by the Federal Service under Title 10 I believe for a minimum amount of months. What is the minimum amount of active duty time required to earn veteran status and what other ways can an ANG serviceman become a veteran? Is veteran status awarded after the honorable discharge?

  24. So I left active duty after serving 4 years of my 6 year contract with the intent to rejoin AD as a CSO. I recently found out the I have literally no depth perception according to all the AF tests. The Navy has a career very similar to the CSO that does not require depth perception. I am REALLY wanting to go Navy after I complete my degree in Summer 2017. At that time I will have slightly over 2 years left on my Palace Chase contract. I noticed in the Palace Chase AFI (36-3205) in section 1.12.10.2 that the "Gaining ARC Personnel Employment Element and/or Selecting Officials" may "not release PALACE CHASE members for transfer to non-Air Force components." This seems…
