Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by electron_si,

I'm looking for some info on possibly joining a local ANG wing. I've got 11 1/2 years in the Army National Guard. I'm currently a 2LT (I was a CW2 and I Direct Commissioned last year) qualified in the UH-60 A/L/M as well as the C-12V. I've done one deployment in the C-12 and have about 540 hrs FW and another 525 RW. I'm a PC/AMC in the UH-60. I've been an Army technician for about 7 1/2 years. For the last 4 years I've been working a tech job that isn't flying as a GS-11, eventually hoping to move to a GS-12 or 13 flying position. Over the past 2 years I've applied for several jobs both AGR and Tech to move on from my current position. Although I've been told I…

I am currently a Marine MV-22 Osprey Pilot. I love flying the Osprey and I love being a Marine. However the fleet has been tough on my wife and kids and I'm not sure if my family will be able to take another 13 years of this before I retire. My initial commitment will be complete in a couple of years and I am considering applying to one of the Air National Guard Unit at my home state which operate F-16 and C-130s. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG will look at my Tilt-Rotor time in regards to UPT. From what I can tell CV-22 pilots only fly the T-6 and UH-1 in flight training. However in t…

I am currently at UPT and we had someone on active duty get hurt and have to be pushed back a few classes until they healed and could get off DNF. It got me thinking, as a guard guy,u how something like that would affect me if I got on a long term DNF status. Would my orders be suspended until I healed? If so, how would that affect my access to medical treatment and TriCare? Obviously I'm new to the guard and flying so any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

When on Title 32 AGR orders for over 30 days, is your BAH based on your unit's zip code? Or on your residence zip code? Or something else?

ARC legacy 130 units are being required to send instructors for all crew positions to Afghanistan for a minimum of 6 months. Given the fact that most IPs in the ARC have fulfilled their pilot training commitment or can retire, what impact has this had on units that are dealing with this? After reviewing the merits of this deployment, one could easily call it a bad deal. Couple that with an optimistic airline employment outlook, you now have a potential readiness issue due to IPs retiring or leaving in larger than expected numbers. Any thoughts?

  11. I volunteer a few hundred hours a year for some non profits that help veterans and wounded veterans. Are there any days we can use towards this purpose? The definition of a PT day is pretty broad but I was looking to see if there is a precedent or if anyone has had success. Cheers

Does anyone have a succinct reference (AFI or otherwise) of what the legal commitment is to your ANG unit? I know we have a legal requirement to attend drill and if you don't show up, the sheriff can pick you up and physically make you attend drill. How about if you come to drill but make no other efforts to stay current? What are the repercussions of that? How does the UPT commitment figure into all of this?

The 158th Fighter Wing is having a UPT board to hire new applicants to join the Green Mountain Boys. Applications will be accepted 1 Jan - 31 March. Interviews for those invited will be held in the beginning of June (exact date still TBD). This board will be to hire new F-35 Pilots. Please visit our website for more detailed information on the entire process. Questions can be sent to jeremy.t.devlin.mil@mail.mil. Good luck to all that apply!

  14. I know this topic is taboo but I would like to know. Of course I am planning on great success but it will be good to know what the implications are if any of the above happen in the training pipeline, rather than be naive to the situation and have something unexpected come up if there is a situation. Do the Reserves basically decide what they get to do with you? If you drop before inprocessing are your just out of the system? If you have issues at OTS are you just a Reserve staff sergeant for a few years? If you wash out of UPT can you essentially just pack it up and go home or will they assign you another job? Just curious. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to get a hold of information or contacts on RPA reserve units holding UPT boards. I have searched all over sent dead end emails, and phone calls trying to find information for Creech AFB reserves. After interviewing 4 times and finally getting selected for a tanker spot, I was recently DQ'ed for a eye issue at my FC1, but was told I still qualified for RPA spots. While the news was a kick in the nuts, I still want to fly for the Guard or Reserve even if its unmanned.

Hi guys I'm wanting to get in with the 147th Fighter Wing to fly F-16's or F-15's because they are located closer to my home area and it would work out very well. I'm trying to get an application together for me and could use a little help on that as well. I'll be reading through all the helpful guides up front tonight. Anyway I don't have much flight time. I only have around 1300hrs with 100hrs multi and the rest of the part 135IFR requirements. Both units have openings so I was wondering if any of you were part of them and could give me some insight. Would recomendations from any Lt. Col's here at the Laughlin AFB make a difference? That's about as high up the chain …

  20. I'm currently an IMA Major in the Air Force Reserve. It's been great being a staff dude for the last 4 years, but it's time to start flying again. I can't fly a desk anymore. I was a C-130 Navigator and prior Army helicopter pilot. Since I was rated, I thought there was no restrictions on age and rank to fly (helicopters). I was told by a HH-60 unit that my rank and age make it difficult for me to be a pilot. BTW, I will be having my first look at LtCol next year. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Upfront: I'm an idiot for not noticing this sooner. Question 1: Should I have received Aviation Career Incentive Pay ("Flight Pay") for both IDT (UTA/AFTP) and AT Days? (Or is it just for AT days?) Question 2: what's the best way to go about getting back pay for Flight Pay from a Unit that I've since left? (I'm still in AFRC, just another unit) Background: I left AD and joined the Reserves in January 2014. Since that point, I've done all of my UTA's and AFTP's, as well as AT days; but it has always been in strings of 2-5 days at a time. I've never done a continuous order. Which means that my pay has always trickled in as relatively small deposits (so, I've never received…

  22. Howdy folks, I'm an enlisted dude in the ANG, still a couple years away from finishing my degree in underwater basket weaving (I can still be a hard science major if it matters to the board that much). I'm a private pilot with just shy of 200 hours and have access to a lot more additional flight time in a Cessna 152 barring maintenance issues and other time commitments. Point being, I love flying, and have the tools to get to a professional civilian piloting career. But that's all fine and dandy, I really want to be a pilot in the military as well. I am totally fine with not having a professional civilian flying job if I end up AGR. Joining the military for a career in th…

So I'm an enlisted reservist out of Nellis and started talking to the helicopter rescue unit at Patrick about putting a pilot package in next year. I live in Florida roughly an hour from the base and commute to Nellis for drill because I like my job and the unit. My Chief told me today I can do a drill weekend with that unit on orders which is great. I'd be in uniform as a SSgt. That being said do any of you see a problem with me hanging out with the pilots if I'm in uniform? Thoughts?

  25. Hi everyone, I'm wondering if any pilots here have attended a full time or part time (non-online) MBA program while a traditional reservist. If so, were you able top balance your commitment to your unit with your course load and were you able to get any tuition assistance from the guard/reserve? I'm in the early stages of submitting my application package to boards, and I'm considering getting my MBA a few years down the line. If this is something that's feasible for me to do, it's going to influence the units I apply to. Any other comments or criticism on my plans are welcome. Thanks! Hank
