September 24, 201213 yr In very nonspecific terms, after Luttrell's team ran into difficulties, Rich and his crew flew DAY and night sorties when no other AFSOC transport would dropping bundles of radio batteries/water/food at low level in the valleys around the survivor. They threw out leaflets soliciting help and promising rewards for his team's safe return. When the village elder sent for help, the villager was carrying one of the leaflets. You can read about the difficulties Luttrell's team ran into and get s flavor for the terrain/threat Rich and his crew contended with by reading Luttrell's book; but you won 't see any mention of the flights because Luttrell couldn't have that awareness given what was going on around him. LG Wurster pinned on the DFC in a quiet ceremony at Richard's unit. Still can't believe Rich is gone. Wow. BAMF.
September 24, 201213 yr RIP brother...his impact on my career through this site was outstanding. Him him!

September 29, 201213 yr Are you saying that someone/some organization was tasked to do this, and they refused? And that Hauben's squadron/airframe/crew/whatnot heard this, and decided they'd go do it? It might be a little embellished, but who cares? Let it ride.

October 4, 201213 yr I had no idea Rich was so young...a sincere thankyou for everything that BO.net was intended to be and everything it has become.
October 5, 201213 yr It appears that a memorial website has been set up for him. Not much content yet.
April 10, 201312 yr There probably wasn't enough room at the bottom for all the accolades he deserved, such as great friend to so many, a mentor to all met, a shining example of a leader in today's Air Force and obviously founder of BaseOps. I hope whoever took that photo paid proper respects to him.
December 30, 201311 yr The world needs more good men such as him. Here's to Rich Hauben! Thank you for all you've done!
September 20, 201510 yr Three years on and you are still very much missed, Rich. We raise a glass in your honor, brother!
