Just read on another forum from someone who witnessed a C-17 crash at Elmendorf? Anyone hear anything?

Edit:

Quote:

Authorities say they are investigating reports of a plane crash on Elmendorf Air Force Base this evening. Some reports indicated the aircraft involved was a C-17 cargo plane.

A black plume of smoke is visible rising from the base.

Firefighters at the downtown Station 1 say they saw a ball of flames at about 6:45 p.m. and a plume of black smoke rise from base. They were called for an agency assist to a report of a plane crash but then were cancelled moments later as they got out on the street, according to firefighters.

Elmendorf officials have so far refused to comment.

Perhaps anecdotal, but on one message board, a poster stated his brother had arrived at PAED in a P-3 and witnessed the crash...there was a large fireball apparently and it appeared (according to this post) that the aircraft was destroyed. News reports are stating there were 4 aboard, but still nothing else. Most major news websites have yet to pick up on it.

-Edited to say I hope that post was wrong, and hope this turns out ok. I'd take a million gear-up landings and more jokes over a smoking hole (sts) any day.

-Edited to add again that yet another news report states that the crash site appears a mile or two "into the woods", away from the runway. Not a good thing.

Same site as above has picture of smoke rising from a wooded area.

It's official...as found on MSNBC...many of the other major news outlets are not yet reporting it, but it's been confirmed by the AKANG:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A C-17 military cargo plane crashed Wednesday night at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.

Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes confirmed crash.

A large cloud of smoke was visible spewing above the base, reported KTUU-TV. Witnesses told the NBC station that smoke and flames were coming from an area near the Elmendorf runway, a couple of miles into the woods.

Initial indications had at least four people on board.

Same woods that took Yukla 27...

-Edit: Unconfirmed of course, but someone at airlinepilotcentral.com has stated 4 fatalities, AKANG doing airshow practice

From the ADN article, it almost sounds like a repeat of the circumstances that led to the Czar 52 accident...low, slow and banked up...accelerated stall and game over.

Prayers to the families, godspeed to the crew...

not good. Those woods around Elmo are pretty unforgiving.

You should have seen those woods before Yukla went down. After that they did a massive culling of the tress in that area.

I was driving around the hammerhead when that E3 went down. I still have a very vivid memory of that plane just sliding down into the trees and the fireball thereafter.

Would it be SOP for leadership to make members of the Squadron turn off their phones to not leak any info? I'm trying to call a buddy up there but his phone is off.

It's been done before. But, depends on the leadership and what they want to do.

Godspeed to the crew...I really hope it's not as bad as it sounds/looks.

Not good....

Another reminder that this is a serious business. I hope for the best for the crew, and my heart goes out to their families and friends.

Three star live on the tv up here said "Yes it was a demonstration profile for the Airshow". Recap of the rest: Not releasing any other information at this time pending the search for more information. Thoughts to flyers and families :flag_waving:

"...demonstration profile for the Airshow"

Honestly, from that description, it does not sound good at all. The fact that no information has been mentioned about the crewmembers leads me to believe the worst...I hope that I am 100% wrong.

(BTW: I think any comparison to CZAR 52 is WAY premature.)

EDIT: Removed speculation

CNN picked it up. Not much information, but it doesn't look good. I sure hope I'm wrong about that last bit.

Hopes and prayers.
