February 19, 200718 yr Just out of curiosity, how many people on here are contemplating mustache march? I'm only in ROTC now, but enough of my AD friends have got me thinking this will be fun. I'm rather slow in the growing department so me and my roommate started today. I'll even probably be going on spring break with mine. We'll also get the results back from big week while rocking these out. I'll attempt to post some pics once they get good. Good luck growing for everyone man enough to try john.

You can judge that, given the ROTC know-it-alls responses to the original question, this tradition is dying a slow death as well. February 19, 200718 yr Bergman - It's not that mustache march isn't an awesome tradition, it's that some ROTC kids thinking they're bad ass for doing mustache march during "big week" is super cool! It's like some ROTC kid walking around w/ the mach tuck in their cap. Just because it's AF tradition doesn't mean everyone somewhat linked to the AF should be doing it, or at the very least think they win points for doing it. But whathever, that's just my opinion.

March 15, 200718 yr Don't get me started on this. Our SQ/CC told us a few days before 1 March that we could not grow mustaches (even though they would have been well within regs) until 15 Mar because T-Mike was visiting 13 and 14 Mar. He didn't want 85 officers with bad mustaches running around the sqdn while the CSAF was here. Big time BS flag and a lot of guys were pissed. The one guy that actually had been growing a mustache for awhile was pulled from mission planning with his crew by our SQ/CC and basically hid away so T-Mike could tour our brand spankin new state of the art mission planning rooms without a mustache distraction. Long story short...our mustache march started today and will end 15 Apr. You really get a good idea of what your leadership is really like when Flag officers show up. They may seem like good guys around the squadron bar, but be wary when a 4-star approaches. My guess is, T-Mike would not have cared (had everyone been in regs) and would have thought it was great camraderie.
March 15, 200718 yr My mustache march got cut short...I had no problem argueing the point to my wife, who hates them, but that is OK, she buys into the comraderie stuff just enough...my 2.5 year old though...I went to give her a kiss goodnight and she said "No, too rough" while pointing to my 'stache....I went and shaved it right then and there. Guess I will stick with Deployed only or once she gets older. That little girl trumps all...

I know Godfrey and Gentile of the 4th Fighter Group grew them during WWII, and I believe the tradition goes back as far as the First World War. And ENJJPT IP, glad to hear you've got your entire squadron participating in Mustache March, including the studs. Gotta make for some humorous 'staches; but as you know that's not the point of Mustache March, it’s the camaraderie of everyone growing one regardless of how bad some look. Matter of fact, at the end of the month we used to hold a contest and one of the categories was ‘Cheesiest mustache.’ I am happy to say I never won it… Cheers! M2
March 18, 200817 yr Being on a navy base for UPT and having this dead creature under my nose has drawn many odd looks from the navy, marine, and coast guard bubbas. But really, those branches are worthless anyways so who cares. The worst part is most of the AF guys here are 1. afraid 2. have NO idea what mustache march is 3. claim they cant grow one so they wont try. SACK UP! There are very few traditions left, and I for one do not want to be apart of the generation that causes another tradition to die. Who cares if the drunk mostly naked girls at the beach bars in PCola or drunk college girls every where wont talk to you due to a mustache, that means you can spend less money on them and drink more for yourself. Thats why porn was invented.

We had some of the most extreme moustaches during Southeast Asia conflict at Takhli RTAFB. Handlebar 'staches so long that they had to be folded so the O2 mask fit. This thread makes it sound like a bunch of PC wus's are riding herd and are winning. If you're flying fighters, you got an obligation to sport a "Go to Hell" moustache. It's part of the uniform. June 13, 200817 yr Pin a medal on that Flight Lieutenant! Anyone notice this? In 2007 the RAF relaxed its restrictions on facial hair for men serving in Afghanistan, because beards are thought to be a sign of status in the country. And we had some Army GO order all our SF guys who were there to shave. Just goes to show you who has true SA... Cheers! M2
June 14, 200817 yr I say "good on the General". He was willing to listen to the Flt Lt offer his explanation, and reversed his decision. It's a good guy that will admit his original decision was wrong, and allow it to be changed. How many of you have bosses that would have refused to change their order.
June 15, 200817 yr The Paul Harvey rest of the story is that the dude's on exchange from the RAF flying with us. Perhaps the source of 'confusion' for the GO. But holy balls what a mustache. They should have let him keep it just for the glory of the thing. Are all Brits wearing US flights suits like the ones flying the UK C-17s? Our UK liaison officer at the moment is an Army dude; but I know the Canucks aren't, at least the one where I work is still wearing the Canadian flight suit. Even if they are, it should be plainly obvious that he isn't an American. For one, the wings are a dead giveaway, as is the accent. And if those clues don't turn on the light bulb, the big fucking Union Jack they are holding should! No, I think the general was being an ass. Seriously, if he is lacking that much SA, it is embarassing! One of the reasons I was happy to retire was that I could finally grow a real mustache, not just during March or deployments. Of course, now I am being told I need to shave it for my CPAP mask for my apnea. Fuck that... Cheers! M2
June 19, 200817 yr I know this is kind of an old topic but here's a quick story from 1991. One of the guys I was stationed with in Plattsburgh and temporarily assigned to the 1703 ARW during Gulf War I decided to grow a mustache while he was deployed. I think he got to the desert in late August and by the time I showed up in early January (the next year) he had a huge push-broom just above his mouth. That stache was the biggest, thickest stache I have ever seen in person. It was huge and made Gen. Old's mustache look like a milk mustache. Whenever Fitz walked into a building everyone would just stop what they were doing and stare. It was classic and our SQ/CC let him keep it until we rotated home (he had to shave it before he reported to duty after getting back home). Our wing commander was less than impressed when we rotated home and one of his pilots jumped out of the airplane looking like Artur Jorge. (I was going to post a picture of Artur but couldn't get it to load right). Fitz had more hair but the mustache was pretty similar.

Nearly all of the instructors and some of the students in my squadron are participating. We have a change-of-command ceremony coming up and the staff wanted a picture with full mustaches to give the CO as a parting gift. They made up a gradesheet and everything for the civilian staff to grade the IP mustaches. I wish there was more student participation but at least the tradition is alive and well! Hence why no one wants to grow one in the desert anymore, myself included. I remember some SNCO asking me, "Is your mustache in regs?" to which I honestly replied, "How should I know what the regs are? I don't wear one of these things when I'm home. It's a desert stache." I tried trimming it to make it "in regs", but it looked retarded so I shaved it. No longer worth the hassel.

Unfortunately mines been growing for 4 years now, so I may have to go with mustacheless March this year...
February 7, 201015 yr Haven't decided if I'm doing Mustache March yet. I've had this animal on my upper lip for a couple months now, and planning on shaving it as soon as I get home. Haven't shaven it since I left home, and it's not going away till I'm back in my own bathroom. I haven't decided if I'm going to quit shaving again so soon after. The combat stache is, of course, horribly out of regs. I'm chewing on it now, as a matter of fact. I actually might be the only guy in the squadron to keep it for the whole rote, other than the one or two dudes who wear a stache year round.
