Here's the current news on the shooting. link Summary: Young male gunman shoots up a bookstore wounding four females, including 2 AF SSgt's. He then goes to a local bar/club and kills the bouncer. He then barricades himself in an apartment and kills himself. Thoughts and prayers for the victims, especially fellow Airmen who were in a place I've spent lots of time at the wrong random time.

What you need is a stout German wife. I recommend Ramstein.

I've heard the expression before, but the wheels are turning and I wonder if it really would. Next time I'm at the range, I'll have to bring a 2x4 with a few partly driven 8d nails to see if I can really drive them in at 25 yds or so.

For semi-auto, you can't beat the Buckmark. I can put any sort of cheap ammo through mine with excellent accuracy. If you really want a revolver, the rugers are very nice. I've had my eye on the bearcat for awhile, but I don't need another .22 right now.

So, what kind of dog do you plan to kennel while you spend three months at OTS (no dogs), six to twelve months in the dorms waiting for UPT to start (no dogs), thirteen months in the dorms during UPT (no dogs)? My recommendation is to put off your pet friend until you are established somewhere that will support that choice. Don't worry, you won't get too bored between now and then. Perhaps you should try to find a girlfriend.

M2, I've had really good luck with the Federal .22 Walmart sells for around 3 cents per round. My favorite is CCI, but it is expensive. Other than the (significant) safety issues, some of things you complain about that range are the things that make unmanaged ranges fun. Also, if anyone is going to Sheppard, the ranges here are excellent. $40 for a 1 year unlimited access family/+guests membership and a full slew of shooting options.

Range update from today. About halfway through the shoot, I figured why let empty shells go to waste. Set up a line of empty .22lr shells at 25yds. Picked 'em off, one with each shot (OK, some bragging here, but it's mostly the gun and the glass). I have to say this thing shoots like a dream and it'll autoload about as fast as my trigger finger can pull.

"2" for the Marlin 60. I have one with a decent 4x Bushnell scope on it and it's almost always within .5" at 50 yards. The one thing to keep in mind on the 60 is to plan for a scope. The raised cheek rest provides an excellent position for scope shooting, but kinda sucks with the iron sights. I personally like the tube feed (STS) for rapid loading, but that's only cause my thumbs hate loading rotary mags.

2 guns are better than 1. Consider the S&W M&P 15-22. It costs around the same as a .22 upper conversion ($430ish). It has the same control arrangement as an AR. It is built from the ground up to function properly with the .22 round. And, you still can pick up your AR without having to tinker.

Also worth talking to outdoor rec. They often have areas you can do that kind of stuff on (as long as no booms are involved).

Base housing for O's is NICE! The area around Missile Rd (North of the off-base base housing area) is pretty nice and very convenient. Tanglewood, and the surrounding areas are nice. The area around the stadium (southwest Wichita Falls) is good. The neighborhood on the north and east of the university is nice, but relatively expensive. If you want to live in the country, there are some great places outside of Iowa Park and on the west side of Burkburnett. Places to avoid: If you draw a triangle with 44, 82 (Kell), and Seymour Hwy, don't live within the triangle (except for the westernmost point). Anything east of 44 and south of Missile Rd all the way down to 287 would be very good to avoid, except the neighborhood right by Missile Rd. Avoid the neighborhoods around Holiday Rd and Old Jacksboro Hwy.

While flying a T-6 the other day... Controller: Turn left heading one-seven-zero, climb and maintain nine-zero thousand feet. If only I could have complied.

You'll be surprised to find out how many people share your sentiments. Among most of the T-38 folks I've talked to, Hogs and Strike Eagles top the list. Sure, nobody would turn down a Raptor or a Viper, but most people seem to want in on the A/G action and want to avoid an uncertain future. Whether there's truth to any of that doesn't matter because if everyone wants an A-10 and they only drop one to your class, that alone making it an awesome drop, its going to go to the top ranked guy that wanted it. Can't give any better guesses than that.

I'm curious what drives you to be a fighter pilot. Is it weapons employment? Is it pulling G's? Do you want to impact the fight? Is it the opportunity to do some crazy maneuvering or low level flight? Is it that you want to be what some consider the pinnacle of aviators? Do you want it so you can use it as a pickup line in bars/clubs? If any/all of the above apply to you, you might be surprised to learn that those criteria aren't confined to the fighter community. They could be used to describe an Army Apache pilot, a C-130 pilot, fighters from any service, or a host of other combat airframes. Recommend you examine your priorities/desires and make a decision based on the opinions in this thread/forum and other info sources.

Mosquito's are widely regarded as being prone to jams. Pretty much the only Sig product that's a dog. +2 on the Buckmark. Buddy of mine has one with an EO-Tech reflex sight mounted on a top rail. Pretty tactical looking and accurate to a forehead at 25 yards. The Buckmarks are also notoriously reliable and easier to disassemble/clean than the Ruger's. You might also want to consider the Kel Tec PLR-22. I've never fired one personally, but it's a pretty sweet looking tactical .22 pistol, has good online reviews, and a low pricetag.

Close call tonight. I was driving home from Wal-mart with lights on, etc, at 20mph. From an intersecting road a Senior NCO runs right in front of me (not bagging, just guessing since he ran to one of the SNCO houses in the neighborhood) decked out in full reflective gear including: reflective PT gear, belt, and vest. He was wearing the full invincibility suit. I thought I was coming up against Iron Man (sts). I was only able to prevent serious damage to my minivan full of kids by using max performance braking. Thanks goodness for reflective gear. Without it, he never would have had the courage to run into the middle of the street in front of oncoming traffic, and his workout might have been momentarily interrupted.

Thanks for the pics. It turns out the rifle is not counterbored. It's nice, clean, and smooth all the way down. Here are some pics.

Once the ammo comes in I'll have to check for counterboring. It has the hexed receiver cover. The on a scale of 1-10, I would rate the stock a 9.5. There is some wear in the shellac on the forward handguard. The whole stock is very smooth and shiny. There are lots of inventory marks on the stock. The most interesting one is a big "Z". It does have the "sniper" mark above the star on the receiver. Trigger pull is very smooth and around 2-3 pounds (estimated).
