And Bone WSO is "myopic" after having served as a Legislative Fellow?

'Myopic' in that Bone WSO a) may have a bias from a close and personal working relationship with the aforementioned Senator, and b) his was a micro look at a singular member, not the macro level I was initially referring to.

As far as being a Legislative Fellow goes, I'm sure every selectee has a solid paper trail of sustained performance and is everything we've come to expect from years of military training.  As a future senior leader in the USAF, I seriously hope for nothing but the best for those cats...living with high expectations can be a bitch.

    YMMV.

It's a super common misconception that Congress is only working when it's in session - there's a lot more going on behind the scenes.

Apologies for the double post...missed your post earlier.

Same as my previous one...if there was the political will from the controlling party in the Senate, the senior uniformed military leaders would already be a confirmed.  There's no legal reason why the Senate can't discharge it's responsibilities to ensure our collective national security.

    My Senator (Sen Mike Rounds)...

Sure, your example may be true...but you have to admit you may have a bit of a myopic view of the situation.

If National Security was truly a priority, and there was the political will to get it done, none of the listed examples would stop them.

Again, why didn't the Senate Majority Leader bring a full floor vote for the USMC Vice Commandant, CSAF, & CNO when CQ was up for CJCS?  Was there a legal hurdle or a political one stopping them?

At least that's my opinion as a voter and taxpayer.

It's not feasible in today's environment to hold a hearing and vote on every individual Senate confirmable office. Removing the big ones (SECAF, CNO) from the backlog will mean less pressure to confirm the ones lower down the food chain.

    Agree to disagree.

Congress wants to be in charge, then accept the responsibility that comes with it.  I've got E-1, 2, 3, & 4s working 6/1s on 12s, I expect the same kind of work ethic from the highest law-making body in the land.

Insert a cliché about 'ignoring a problem won't make it go away' or 'Bad news doesn't get better with time'...both apply to this situation.

Again, this is political theater with three sides…unless you truly think that the 12x takers of the DoD policy on funded abortion travel is a higher National Defense priority over the nomination approvals of the Senior Military leaders.

SecDef Austin and Senate Majority Leader Schumer have statutory options they are choosing to not exercise...and I have to ask myself "Why?"

Well, the Senate stepped over Tuberville and confirmed CSAF and CNO.  Bigger headline is the CNO, 1st woman on the JCS staff.

    https://news.yahoo.com/senate-sidesteps-tubervilles-hold-confirms-165415542.html

No offense, but 'exercised the authority the Senate had the entire time' is probably a more accurate description.

What legally changed for Chuck Schumer between last week and today?  Tuberville's hold was never a insurmountable obstacle.

Remember that politically, both parties use your military service as pawns of whatever it is its after.

  6. I agree with both @Danger41 and @tac airlifter, but a few years ago I started to ask myself 'what's the right number?' on AMs or AAMs?

I don't have a personal threshold, because some career paths, still hacking the mission, don't take you through multiple combat deployments.

The examples listed above, white jet / FTU tours, etc.

It's needs to be a balance...and while fuzzy, I know it when I see it skewed in one direction.

A flying Wing King in the modern Era with low single digits on AMs...yeah, that's a little 'Sus as the cool kids say

  7. I’ve told 3/4 stars a few times a COA was bad, why it was bad, and what COA should be executed and why. I’m about 50/50 success rate. The one thing I did note across all of those interactions is the GO was genuinely interested in my thoughts and appreciated my effort whether they went my direction or not. The O-6 level was pissed I would dare to speak. It made me realize how much good things are filtered away from GOs at the O-6 level and replaced with yes man bullshit.
I'm old enough to remember a scene in M*A*S*H, where COL Potter stated that other "Colonels are chasing that star that they'll do almost anything"...or something similar.

Its a little disheartening that a line from a 70s TV show is the reality 50 years later. But I keep that in mind when I see the Council of Colonels in group-think mode.

Most GOs, that I've worked with at least, enjoy the conflicting view point...presented in a unemotional & professional manner. Shoe Clerk Chief of Staffs in particular seem to get bent out of shape when that happens.

Or I could just be the asshole who somehow keeps surviving.

Im serious.  I dont care who General Chang is.

Any other reddit fucktards messing around on this forum should realize we're all not fake accounts.

    Internet Warrior - Biff

First off, I appreciate the use of 'fucktard'...classic insult that has layers, yet instantly understood across a broad demographic.  It saw heavy rotation in teenage GKinnear's day.

Second, I agree with your post, as most of us did 10 years ago when @General Chang first appeared in these hallowed halls (fuck I'm old).  Chang was a more subtle character then, and played the part too well.

They say an old dog can't learn new tricks, but in time, after repeated textual onslaughts from the entire BO community against his blue kool-aid induced corporatist wet dream, Chang changed his tactics and is less outright in his 'you're replaceable' mantra.  He has occasional flashes of his previous delusions of grandeur, but overall he's a literal ill-conceived joke...and he knows it.

@Biff_T you're capable of determining your own COAs...but there are better targets out there.

@BashiChuni +1 internet point to you...Chang will continue to receive my full-send of downvotes.

  9. 1,000s of EKIA disagree with the keyboard "warrior" comment.  If anything, this is the last place I'd throw those words around General.  Maybe some of you fearless leaders dont know what its like to have done the dirty work, but some dudes on this forum did the real work.  We didnt lie to the American public and inside trade our whole lives.  Go spout that keyboard warrior shit somewhere else.  I'd love to let you live a day in the my life.  My reccurring (every ing night) nightmares would probably put most congressmen into cardiac arrest.  Im on so many meds and my family has suffered for years because the warrior stuff.  When's the last time you thought you were not coming home while doing your job?  When's the last time you had to make a decision to save your crew's life and let the guy on the ground die?  Don't have to live with your past decisions  when you're a spineless scumbag that goes by the name Mr or Mrs Congressman.
I'm not sure if you're serious, or continuing the long con from @BashiChuni. If Chang were a real account, sure....

For the record, hats off to @BashiChuni liking his own posts...its like public masturbation and getting away with it.

Currently JROTC is in just 10% of schools nation wide, in dense liberal population centers that number drops to far below 10% (New England 5% - California 6%).  Conversely, upwards of 65% of public schools in Louisiana Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina have JTROC.  Not surprisingly 41% of all military recruits come from the south, 45% of all recruits come from a high school with a JRTOC program.  In other threads folks have debated the good and bad of JRTOC programs.  DoD recently put in a large effort to address many of the problems other have noted.  While the programs say they are not about recruiting there is obviously a pathway to military service for those that participate.  That being said, numerous studies have shown that students who participate in JROTC programs have better attendance, grades, and graduation rates relative to students who were in general academic programs.

I know this is a military forum, dealing with military issues...but the JROTC decline is not an isolated event.  Any youth development organization that's been around for ~100 years or so is also facing a decline in membership.  Scouting, faith-based youth groups, HS arts programs, etc.  From my perspective, Club and HS sports seem to be main remaining avenues to mentor and grow kids into Adults that are contributing members to society...and their focus isn't necessarily on Civics, Service to Others, Mom and Apple pie type issues.

Change is inevitable, and in this case, I don't think the societal 'need' that JROTC filled has had a suitable replacement designed, let alone delivered.

Editor - What have we got to publish?

Perky Young Journalist 1- Well Boss, we could publish a story on the lack of PCS and Bonus money.

Crusty Journalist 2 - I've got a story ready for the reserve call up to Europe for Ukraine support.

Editor - Both of y'all get the fuck outta here with that nonsense...I want 10% more adds from Juul and Monster, and run this story about Civil War masturbation as filler.  We got keep that click count up!

Any military times pub is only good for house breaking to dogs...and since the switch in paper quality, it's not even good at that.

    @brabus

Necessary evil indeed. Aside from the expertise angle, the Data Engineers, O-5 retired-now-GS, or worse contractors don't have any skin in the game.

It's easier to make a "bad" decision when you don't have to answer the mail later on, or look the bros in the eyes.

At least the 12x communities have that going for them.

    @dogs-n-guns

While I've routinely gotten a JA or IG opinion before moving out, I've also relied on my own decision making after getting their risk assessment. "Legally sufficient" doesn't always equal the right thing for the Airman, Squadron, or the Force...that's why Commanders get paid to do the job.

But to your point, some individuals may choose to stop at that point. YMMV
