You guys are funny... "least amount of work"??? Gone 180 day a year?? There are lots of places you can make 150K a year and be home every night.
I think he's referring to the fact that flying an airliner is relatively easy work (it is). Also, when you're home, you don't even think about work, I know I don't. I don't know anyone that is gone 15 days/month (that doesn't want to be). Most of our guys bid reserve and sit on the porch while "working," rarely getting called.
We have quite a few part timers that are contractors or some sort of businessmen. Most of them are on the road quite a bit, they all seem to have platinum status... Also, when they're on a TDY, as soon as we get done with work, they're in their hotel room on the computer working their other job. A few of them have apps in at the airlines.
If you've found a job paying 150+ (in a place that doesn't have a ridiculous cost of living), that keeps you home every night, then more power to you. I'm not going to say the airlines are the end all, be all. I will always keep an ear to the ground for good gigs (outside of flying) out there. Just pointing out some observations I have seen in my little corner of the world.

Undermine mission effectiveness, weaken us as a fighting force. You're spouting a lot of hyperbole, but it's empty words. Nobody seems that particularly concerned about color, ethnicity, and sex except for you, your O-6, and maybe a couple of guys in the Pentagon who got tasked with writing an AFI that really has no teeth or power to speak of.

Bad gouge. First off, no Majors are hiring right now.
Had a college friend get hired by United last week. My current airline has recently lost a few to US Air as well. But you're right, I highly doubt anyone is making 97k their first year...Maybe year two. All bets are off for the FedEx guys...year two is ridiculous.

I don't doubt there are one or two here and there, but my understanding is this is non-standard.
All of our guys hired in the last wave, got the 75/76 right out of training.
FWIW...I was in a Delta jumpseat a week ago, and from the Captain (who had recently attended training) The latest numbers from Delta were 60/month for the first 6 months of 2014, then 20/month. Take that with a grain of salt.

And people wonder why there are less and less applicants for pilot slots these days. Cadets are afraid to fail because failure means losing their career before it begins and taking on a massive amount of debt.
If someone lets their fear of failing UPT keep them from trying, it probably wasn't for them anyway.

5 killed after van overturns during Border Patrol pursuit
TUCSON, Ariz. – Authorities say five people died after the van they were traveling in rolled over in southern Arizona as it was being pursued by Border Patrol agents.
Rural/Metro Fire spokesman Willie Treatch says 22 people were in the van at the time it rolled over Saturday night in between Tucson and Benson, Ariz.
Seventeen other people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Their injuries are unknown.
Treatch says he didn't know the circumstances of the vehicle pursuit by the Border Patrol.
The Border Patrol didn't return calls seeking comment on Sunday.

I mean, I've always heard about it happening second-hand, but I've never met someone who was actually making payments to Uncle Sam due to failing out if IFT/UPT/Whatever. Does this really occur? How the hell does that work? Split it into 60 easy payments?

I also few up with "humor",... something an AFI will never understand.
Well we have to be "more fair" to certain groups, if not, that would be discrimination...

Not even for fini flights! When you're on state property, you play by state rules. I know of at least 3 states with the same rule. It also doesn't help when the Army is part of your chain of command.

Yes, gun nuts, that extends to your right to own 50 anti-materiel sniper rifles as much as it extends to the right to free speech and due process.

The leadership at my Guard base is forcing us to use PT gear for all PT tests starting in October. This should probably go in the "WTF?" thread. For all the other Guard guys, is this coming your way?
Been here for more than a year. Also, no alcohol on base, no Friday shirts and no Friday or morale patches.

Ya buddy...wasn't fast enough! I really didn't NEED them so no loss. I just hope we'll be able to buy ammo soon. Heck, I'll settle for just being able to find the gun I want, in stock (at a reasonable price)! Prior to Newtown, I had a list of 4 guns I was preparing to buy, but was holding off until I funded accessories for the guns I already had. So far, I have only found one of them in stock! I'm hoping by the end of the year, things will be back to somewhat normal levels.

Any safe recommendations? From my limited research, it seems Liberty, Patroit and American Security all seem popular. I'm thinking I'll be in the market for a 50-64 gun, safe. I have had 10+ long guns (multiple scopes) and had 10+ handguns and will be buying wish I could buy more. Plus I'd like to have room for ammo random non-gun related stuff/accessories/paperwork/etc... Would like to keep it ~$2k.

Unfuck the acquisitions process. We pay 10x as much and get 1/2 to capability...or the shit is already obsolete by the time we get it! Start with JMPS and PEX...
Stop changing uniforms every other year. Also, why does everyone get the "OTW" uniforms, now? Last time I deployed, only people who were actually going "outside the wire," received these uniforms... I thought thenideamofmthe ABU was to be world-wide deployable, so we didn't have to issue more uniforms to go to the desert.
They have already started fixing this, but the whole ORI process costs so much, it's fucking criminal!

Actually, how can you go about getting a stupid AFI changed? I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Maybe we should make it easier for operators/Airmen to report stupid AFIs. Also, if the AFI does have a good reason it might give someone a chance to explain why it's in place, so said operator/Airman doesn't decide to just ignore it and break something.
Start with the OPR, or find out who has waiver authority.

I knew them in that I knew their names and in passing. They flew out of the airport that our flight school got some of our mx done. It was a good shop, these three just happened to fly out of this particular airport. The mx guys showed me the aftermath of the 421 and R22...the 310 happened after I left for pilot training, can't say I was surprised. I did not associate with these guys!

I know what he's talking about. When I went to Airline Transport Professionals in Trenton, the DPE kinda busted my CFI's balls for not endorsing my logbook to reflect legitimate training had transpired. It's the paper trail, that's all, and a CYA issue..
A CFI is not required to endorse your logbook, nor does the ATP ride require any kind of endorsement. Your instructor WAS covering HIS ass.
and I'm surprised the interviewers at Jetblue didn't ask me about it.They didn't check because its really a non-issue. My interview, they didn't even look at my logbooks. I just signed a paper saying I met ATP mins or had an ATP.

I have zero civil time...is it normal to fly without a seatbelt?
Negatron. FAR (or 14 CFR 91, for the reg Nazis) says you have to keep your seatbelt on for takeoff, landing and while en-route, and your shoulder harness on for takeoff and landing (unless you are unable to do you job as a result of wearing the shoulder harness).
I always wear mine when flying, either mil or civ.2! This goes along the lines, of play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I generally try to give the benefit of doubt, but I'm scratching my nugget on this one. Maybe the seatbelts are uncomfortable, or maybe there was a malfunction of the seatbelt (highly unlikely...but then again, so is your canopy flying off). Either way it sounds like this was easily preventable, and that's unfortunate.
Didn't the pilot of the Aewacs, that had the tanker incident fuck up his back because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt (2nd hand info)?
I'm generally not the guy that goes around quoting ever FAR (as I post a reg above), but they are there for a reason. I've known a few guys that had blatant disregard for the regs, we all have. One packed in a 310 while flying IFR, he was not instrument or multi-engine rated. Another one destroyed a beautiful 421 because he decided to fly into known icing with malfunction boots. He decided to adjust his flap setting on landing and stalled it 50 feet above the runway. He broke a wing spar, bent the engine mounts so bad that his props hit the pavement, and the plane never flew again. The last guy balled up a R22 because he decided to start it up in the hanger and taxi out...you can't make this shit up!

14 checkrides (including several 141 stage checks) I have never had a DPE endorse my logbook, with the exception of documenting the stage checks, not license or certificate issuance. Handing me a temporary was the routine.
2! I received all the way through my ATP/CFI/CFII, prior to joinging the military. In all those check rides, I've never had an examiner endorse my logbook.

I can't imagine why he would have taken his seat belt off. Aside from flying at the airlines, I can't remember a time I ever took my seat belt off.
