  1. I guess I must be out of touch, because I don't know what he's talking about. He says the problem is "out there" but I'm just not seeing it, which leads me to conclude that it must be a non-ops squadron issue.

Ugh, obviously YOU'RE part of the problem! Go sing your rape songs and drink with your mermaid mugs elsewhere!

    [/sarcasm]

  2. J-models...'nuff said!

They don't make the F-16J. My union refrence was toward MX, which is mostly technician (ie..union). They pretty much dictate the flying schedule. We can fly all we want as long as they get their union breaks, their lunch and are out of work on time. Land late...sorry not getting those jets the next am!

  3. Yup..they're called Flight Engineers. Ask any Guard unit out there!

I am Guard, and get to deal with the union often. The union allows many to forget that the jets on the ramp are the reason they have a job...

Another car vs. motorcycle road rage story. But the WTF is the on scene reporter!

  4. Apparently, an undisclosed number of Airmen were so emotionally troubled by the sight of a manger scene that they immediately notified the MRFF.

This really causes people emotional distress? Who are these pussies? No wonder we're fucked!

Standing by for Liquid to defend them.

  5. they don't pay you the equivalent of your wage, so you're losing money.

Not true. If you take leave, sure you get all your normal pay (which you would be getting anyway), you just don't have to show to work. But if he's satisfied with his time off and he sells leave, he will make more $$$ (at base pay only) ON TOP of his normal pay. Strictly speaking in $$$, it's a net gain. I won't even get into the value of time off here. I should caveat this with, I use all of my leave as I enjoy the time off.

Last I knew, you could sell back a max of 60 days in a career (unless you're Guard/Reserve). Swing by finance and they will explain it all to you. You should be able to sell it anytime you want.

  6. I question how a helmet mounted cueing system that kills you if you eject too fast passed into active service. We don't mitigate that risk at all - we just accept it because we have no other choice. I can't knock off my JHMCS like I do my NVGs.

To say that ACES II is so safe that we shouldn't be developing or investigating new technologies is unsat in my opinion. I love that my seat is 0/0, but it'd be great if it wouldn't dislocate my knees and potentially break my back in an ejection.

It's a damn good seat. Ejecting at 569kts or in an out of control aircraft is going to be a pretty dangerous proposition no matter what seat. But I agree that we shouldn't just call it good enough. Hopefully we dump the HMCS and pick up the HMIT (Scorpion), I believe that will help out the ejection issue, not to mention it's a way better helmet. However, I would have rather had them spend money to get auto-GCAS developed and in the jets much quicker. That would have saved way more lives!

  7. You must work for Liquid.

Haha, well played! Actually, both my WG/CC and OG/CC are airline pilots (on mil leave). I just like to be able to access my flight records at home...makes things much easier for me. There is plenty of airline talk in my squadron, to include all of our EPs (on just got hired at Delta, all of the other have their apps in). Good luck trying to give a ground eval because we're talking airlines...you'll probably get laughed out of the room.

  8. The service must investigate whether helmet equipment, such as a night vision or a helmet-mounted cueing system, can cause an increased risk of death or serious injury.

Done...it's already in the -1. Ejecting above 450kts with the HMCS could mean bad things for your neck/life. Hell, not routing the Upper HVI properly could cause severe neck injury. Also, briefed to knock off the NVGs before you punch.

  9. Except back in the day the vouchers didn't get f'd up -- you turned them in at containers that were located at convenient places around base, and the pros whose job it was to process them did...and they didn't get kicked back to fix the tiniest nitnoid crap like they seem to do more recently. I can say that for about 7 or 8 years in the mid-late 90s, I never had to go to finance and have a voucher unscrewed.

Agreed! I've been in over 12 years and only switched to DTS in late 2011. Not once did I ever have a problem with my orders/tickets/reservations, until I started using DTS. I carried a travel voucher on the trip and logged shit as I went. When I got home, I just dropped it off at finance and was always paid pretty fast.

Since I've started using DTS, more often than not something is fucked up. Hell, a few weeks ago I ended up with no airline ticket there or home (ended up non-revving out since i had no time to contact SATO), and my rental car had 3 different reservations. My authorization wasn't approved until a week after my TDY (I created it about 1.5 weeks prior). When we had the Debit card, I got so accustom to not having funds loaded that I just left my per diem on my card so I knew I could always get tickets/ hotels.

There is a special place in hell for whoever thought up DTS (right beside the creator of JMPS)!

  10. The Air Force has the best CSAF in years, and we pissed it away by distracting him with sex scandals. I know that it was a statistically insignificant amount of folks who were involved in the worst of it, but the culture enabled it to happen. The more time he has spent testifying in Congress about this issue, the less clout and energy he has to advocate for and make changes that matter.

What the fuck ever. WE caused it? How about our current leaderships generation? They clearly did so much to stop this "culture" when they were mid level Captains/Majors. But sure, WE pissed it away...

Name one sexual assault enabled by our culture.

It's those damn fighter pilots and their rape songs! That and their mermaid handled mugs just drive them to rape and sexual assault.

  11. F-35.

    RQ-4.

No arguments here. I guess I should throw out my list.

    F-35

    C-21

    RQ-4

    B-1

    KC-10

Since you asked, I don't know where the Guard gets its funding, I assumed it rested largely on the states' shoulders.

The Guard wishes this were the case.

I also don't know where the most effective cost-cutting comes from, but if it does come from eliminating an entire MWS wholesale, what about the B-1? Much like the KC-10, it does things neither the B-2 or B-52 can do, but the only thing that seems to matter in this environment is how much money can be saved by elimination. It is also only at two bases like the KC-10, and $58K/hour (according to the Time article) is no bargain. And to continue the analogy, the next-generation bomber is "in the works."

    I couldn't agree more.

What eludes me is how the move will in fact save any significant amount of money. No one is talking about closing any bases or cutting any personnel, so you're basically saving hourly operating costs by getting rid of an airframe. But if you cover the resulting operational shortfall with other tankers, where is the huge savings? The difference in hourly cost would have to be quite significant between the two to reap any real savings. This is ultimately a case of being penny wise and pound foolish, especially when you consider that this is being considered while the F-35 is continuing full steam ahead.

You save money in many different avenues. Lets use the Viper for example, the following (plus much more, I'm sure) would be cut. The fleet obviously, Depot MX, SPO, Paint facilities, Test (ET/OT), AATC, Regional support centers, personnel, training, Simulator facilities (at least 5), logistical supply chain, etc... you get the point. There is so much more than just the jets themselves.

  12. What did they say was best-case? Continued funding? I still think giving them to the guard is a better option than shit-canning them if the AD can't find the money for them anymore. This Time article has the hourly costs for many AF airframes, and the KC-10 and A-10 are among the cheapest on the list. Makes perfect sense to get rid of both of them...

    http://nation.time.com/2013/04/02/costly-flight-hours/

Where do you think most of the Guard budget comes from? I'll give you a hint, it's not the state...and the AD still owns the iron.

We are flat broke and something has to be done. I tend to agree that cutting an airframe completely gives you the best savings. Cutting various airframes here and there just drive up the operating costs. What airframes would you chop?

  13. Not rumor, it's full up true and in writing. Director of ANG is fully on board by the way. AFRC CC was not, but he lost.

And there you have it! It will be interesting to see what 6 month deployments do to retention. Also, wonder if the ANG will be "volunteering" for these or if the AD will be forced to activate the squadrons to deploy them.

False. It's financial believe it or not. About 15% more cost in MPA to swap out at 90 days and there is no money.

What does it cost to activate an ANG squadron?

  14. A female Nav calls her boyfriend and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."

Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The girl says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."

Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster."

He takes her hand and says, "Second, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh, we will put all the Corn Flakes back in the box,"

    But is she hot?

  15. Is the "AD-lite" mentality predominantly staying out of ANG units? Of course with the exception in this thread...

I would say it varies wildly depending on your leadership. When I first enlisted we did 30 day AEF's with a swapout at the 15 day point. Then it went to 30 no swap, then 45, now 60, the next is supposed to be 3-4 months no swap, with rumors of 6 months. If 6 month deployments happen, we will start to see a huge retention problems, which has generally never been a problem. Heck, at one point we had a 1 year waiting list to enlist.

We've gone from OPRs being another pain to accomplish to them now being scrutinized heavily. No one knew WTF an ODP was until this year. We are being briefed that if you want O-6, the criteria has changed big time. Need to hit 3 of 5 criteria (masters, joint command, In-residence PME, staff, can't remember the last one). I know one particular squadron who "highly encourages" getting a masters (their state pays for their masters, most do not). Medals have suddenly become a thing. Some states don't allow alcohol on base, no friday shirts, "morale" patch police. Also, coming to an ANG Wing near you...active duty WG/CC! Not a dude getting out of the AD to GO GUARD, but an AD O-6 doing a 2-3 year tour then moving on to his next AD assignment. This could be huge, I will be watching to see how it pans out. Overall, I we still have it pretty damn good, stories from bros and the endless stream of AD guys rushing our squadron are always a good reality check. Times are changing for sure, some good, some really bad.

  16. When I managed to take over a Sq Stan Eval shop I was successful at convincing 2 commanders that patch wearers should not be EPs.

Did you not do MSN checks? I can't think of anyone better to do MSN checks, but our patches don't downgrade for BS shit. Then again, inst/mission checks are really just another flight for most.
