  1. --One of our pilots was forbidden to shower while the base played war....he was on his way to shower prior to showing for a real-world combat airlift mission (we train Iraqis on the Herk), when they told him he had to get into the nearest bunker and play along...he told the guys that he was still in crew rest and preparing to show for a real-world mission...the answer he got was "no, you're going to play war today, Captain", so he threw his hands up and went to a bunker for an hour...and the flight was late taking off. Nice job, guys. Sorry crew, I was late for my real combat mission because the homos next door felt like pretending they are in combat.

Total BS! War GAMES are more important than real world....I have heard it all now! Listen man, either arrest me or get out of my way I'm going to the shower! Here is my commander and his phone number, take it up with him. I could see the SF commander trying to explain to an Army commander that his air support was late due to the base "PLAYING" war games, that should go over real well!

  2. While were on the topic of letters to the editor. I read this in Torch magazine the other day in disbelief. Does anyone else think this sounds like a little kid that isn't getting enough attention?

    Magazine Article - Page 2

I read the article “Too Much Chlorine in Pool Leaves Combat Controllers Coughing, Vomiting” (May/June 2008

issue of Torch, page 5) and was kind of disappointed.

In the article you mentioned, “The base fire department responded to the medical emergency.” Well, that may be, but I can tell you that two ambulances and an AMBUS responded with emergency room and flight medicine medics/emergency medical technicians for treatment and transport to the emergency room. The ER hospital staff came together as a team to treat the combat control students and handled the mass casualty situationvery well.

The hospital staff that was a part of this unfortunate incident was commended by everyone for the quick treatment, transport and overall outcome. The article I read mentions nothing about the hospital, ER or its medics. As the flight chief of emergency services, I can tell you that they did an awesome job that day. I think their performance is worthy of mentioning in that article.

    Master Sgt. John “Chip” Coleman

Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., Medical Center

We appreciate your feedback and further insight on the noteworthy

emergency response to this mass casualty mishap.

  3. I can understand that, but i would be really surprised if they let you any closer than you can see at an airshow. Go to El Paso or the casino and drink some beer. Seriously. Don't hang around Holloman.

Went there a month ago and our group got a pretty good look at a 22. I was close enough to crawl in the wheel well and missile bays. Didn't get to look in the cockpit, to be honest it's not much to look at on the outside. It was more interesting to see the layout of the systems inside the aircraft, neat stuff that would have made my life easier when I was a maintainer. Ask nicely and they will give you a tour. We left right after the tour and got a hotel in El Paso. You have plenty of time to get the fuge done, go do a tour and still get to El Paso for some beer.

  4. Doing a FOD walk at Mt. Home, had a guy walking next to me that I didn't recognize...

Me: "Hey dude, where's your line badge?"

Dude: "Uh yeah, I don't have one yet, my shop told me to come out here and help with the FOD walk."

    Me: "Ok, let's go."

Grabbed him and took him straight across the red line. Sky cops proceeded to put him face down on the snow covered concrete.

Mt. Home again, had a guy walking out to his plane over the red line...twice! Not like he couldn't see it and the ECP was only 25 feet away. Called it in and then proceeded to empty the truck of mx guys who surrounded him and dragged him off the line (he didn't have a line badge either, claimed he left it in his room). He ate concrete as well.

You pretty much saved the United States on that one, that guy was most likely a Russian spy!

I was at my base for a year and a half before I finally received my line badge, thanks to SF screwing up my paperwork :bash: . Missed out on two trips because of their F-up. I got questioned all the time when I first showed up, but most of them had enough sense to ask other guys in my shop before they took me to the SP shack. I can understand security being a big deal but use a little sense before feeding some poor kid to the wolves, lord knows an SP is just itched to jack someone up. He probably didn't know any better and was just listening to his flight chief who told him to get his a$$ out their for the fod walk. Again, I'm all for security but lighten up Francis!

  5. Question for anyone that might know off the top of their head: If I have a CFI/CFII that has expired, would I need to retake the FOI (since I already completed it once).

§ 61.199 Expired flight instructor certificates and ratings

    (a) Flight instructor certificates. The holder of an expired flight instructor certificate may exchange that certificate for a new certificate with the same ratings by passing a practical test as prescribed in §61.183(h) of this part for one of the ratings listed on the expired flight instructor certificate.

    (b) Flight instructor ratings. (1) A flight instructor rating or a limited flight instructor rating on a pilot certificate is no longer valid and may not be exchanged for a similar rating or a flight instructor certificate.

    (2) The holder of a flight instructor rating or a limited flight instructor rating on a pilot certificate may be issued a flight instructor certificate with the current ratings, but only if the person passes the required knowledge and practical test prescribed in this subpart for the issuance of the current flight instructor certificate and rating.

    [Doc. No. 25910, 62 FR 16298, Apr. 4, 1997, as amended by Amdt. 61–104, 63 FR 20289, Apr. 23, 1998]

If you can understand that, you should find your answer.....goodluck!

I always thought that you just retake the practical, but the section (2) has me confused. To answer to the second part of your question, you can only renew your CFI, by adding an additional rating, if your certificate has not expired. Check 61.197.

For all you guys considering getting your CFI, they are required to renewed every 24 calendar months. I would recommend reading Part 61 subpart H. There are a few different ways to update these but I would suggest American flyers. You pay $125 once and can renew every two years thereafter. For a little more they will take care of all the paperwork for you, which is nice if you don't have a FSDO nearby. I used this program while I was in UPT and it worked great. There are a few other companies out there that charge you that price every time you update. A Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) is another way to renew your CFI, but usually run around $150 and consists of two 8 hour days, and again that charge is every time you attend one.

  6. Negative. They actually made the Captain students salute the FAIP Lts when I was there. Kind of stupid, but it's a formality.

Do all other UPT bases do this? Only time we saluted our IP's is before the morning formal brief, never before a brief to fly.

As far as saluting 1Lt's, my rules are 1.) Salute anyone not rated 2.) Any O-2 of another service.

  7. Again, pardon my gun virginity, but does that mean that Hawaii is gun-friendly or not? (I've never lived in Illinois.)

Illinois is about as gun friendly as Chicago Mayor Daley is to Meigs Field Story here, in other words, not very friendly!

  8. What kind of D-Bag father does this dude have. Hell if my dad found out I was going around grabbing girls like that, he would have put me in a hospital!

To bad this crap didn't happen back where I grew up. That place is so back woods, the cops would agree with most of us and look the other way. Don't go around doing that $hit and this wont happen. I'm sure we have all seen his type, that rich kid who doesn't know the value of anything. The same ones who do whatever they want and think there are no consequences because "daddy" will bail him out. I have no sympathy for this kid.
