  1. Anyone hunt big game here? Thinking about doing a build. Most common use would be deer, but want something that I can use for bull elk and possibly big horn as well. Not sure if 308 would do well enough over 300 yards. Ugh, decisions.

I'm not really a big game hunter, but a .308 should "suffice," but wouldn't be my first choice. A .308 will still have ~1,000 ft/lbs of energy out to 500m, but that will drop off to significantly at 1,000m. I would look the 7MM series or a .300 Win Mag.

Not sure if you've seen this guy, but he's got a 74 part series on long range shooting. This guy can put you into coma getting into the weeds, but he conveys a metric fuckton of info.

  2. So apparently related to the health-and-welfare crusade...have any other squadrons/wings banned alcohol in the debrief yet? We just got a new policy that says, essentially, no alcohol on duty, period, and debriefing is still on duty. Also no alcohol in the vault, period...so mission planning is a lot more boring now.

Welcome to my life...been that way at my Guard base for >5-6 years. No alcohol on base, state property = state rules. I know of at least 2 other states with the same rule. It has really hurt our afternoon debrief. Guys tend to stick around longer when they can have a jack & coke or beer while hashing out lessons learned.

  3. How does singing dirty songs, displaying Hooters calendars, listening to sexually explicit songs, using sexual innuendos or putting pictures of sexy women in your crew briefs (all at work) make you a better warfighter?

Who sings dirty songs at work? Have you been in an operational squadron lately? The only place songs get sung, and explicit songs get played is during a roll call, behind closed doors and after hours. If you don't wish to take part, then leave, you're not required to be there. I have never witnessed inappropriate pictures in a flight brief. You keep bringing up shit that I don't think anyone is fighting to keep.

Read your magazines on your own time, not at work. If you need them or want to read them during your break, just put them in the damn drawer.

It was in the break room... Not mine, but I assume people read them on their union breaks or lunch break.

With as much bitching about how you can't read the -1 or the SPINS because you have to get your bullshit AAD, I'm surprised how many people want open and visible access to their magazines.

I've never bitched about such things. Thankfully, the AAD ridiculousness has yet to hit the Guard.

I've always flown aircraft in squadrons with female crewmembers, so I never referred to pilot peers as "bros". I've never been in a squadron that blatantly used word games, sexual innuendo or songs about sex. I have given shit to my fighter pilot friends my entire career for those traditions.

Ah the classic, I'm not a fighter pilot but assume we walk the hallways singing "rape songs" type of person. Had a few of those types in my pilot training class (former Navs), biggest haters of fighter pilots I've ever seen. Turns out, little if any of the shit they told us about fighter pilots was true. Weird how guys who've never spent any time in a fighter squadron didn't know shit about what really happens.

I did tolerate Maxim style pictures in combat zones, using the "bought it at the BX" test. I told inappropriate jokes when I was a crewdog. I probably use too much profanity and try to cut down on it at work. During my career, I saw plenty of what is now considered "inappropriate" material and didn't say anything. I didn't do that as a commander.

So...it was ok for you to do when you we're younger but not for us. Love the hypocrisy.

"Subjected"? My wife is hot, fuck you! No pictures to follow, wouldn't want to offend you.

It's true! I have pics if anyone wants to see!

  4. A picture of a woman in a bikini is not sexual harassment but it is sexually offensive material.

So, what about Runners world magazine? This particular issue had a cover of a chick in a sports bra and spandex shorts? Inappropriate? GMAFB! I found it mildly entertaining that the chick who confiscated the magazine was rather fat. I wanted to tell her to take it home, maybe read it...

A major factor in this discussion is the "at work" part. I could care less that nsplayr says he would "hit that" on a message board when he looks at an official photo of an Air Force officer

You'll have to excuse nsplayr, he must be deployed to say he would hit that...

Sure some people make bad decisions and judgments about what is sexually offensive material. People, including commanders, make bad decisions every day. Challenge them directly and make your case. Work towards the right decisions, not against the entire concept.

This is one of the problems I have with this sexual harassment witch hunt. People call shit offensive and unprofessional, because they THINK someone MAY get offended. Mermaid handle mugs...are you fucking kidding me? When you try to make your case (not just the mermaid mugs), you're told to get on board or called part of the problem. What?!?!?! You don't agree with me? You're obviously sexist and a rapist in waiting! It's like the liberal hippies I dealt with in college. Their argument just spirals down to personal attacks and other non-fact based comments.

Another problem is the fact that all it takes is one chick to say something and you're guilty until proven innocent.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/18/jeffrey-krusinski-charge-dropped_n_3618658.html Sadly, I have seen this happen to others (outside of the mil). All were found not guilty/charges dropped, but not before their names were drug through the mud. This shit happened in college, >10 years ago, but if you search their name this shit still comes up. No matter what, they will listen to the chick (ref: lady known to lie to get what she wants in Lt Col Wilkerson case), and you WILL be guilty until proven innocent. Sure, your leadership will say you're innocent until proven guilty, but your clearance will be taken away, off flying status, removed from your position and off course the papers will fry you if they catch wind of it! Then when you're found innocent, the newspaper may publish a story but will likely bury it in a small corner of page 16.

Maybe Delta airlines will be more tolerant of your jokes towards the stews. I doubt it.

Have you ever flown for the airlines? Some of my (female) flight attendants have said shit that even made me blush! When the Capt has to take a piss, we are required to have an FA up front...sure glad CVRs don't have a video camera!

The recent actions taken by commanders to prevent hostile work environments (sts memo, bikini test, black eye) may not be effective, but they are not wrong. They show commanders are serious about preventing hostile work environments, mentoring their Airmen and making sure they understand what they should do when they see something wrong.

They just scream, look at me, look at me! I'm doing something I think you want me to do...give me your next DP. Most people have moved on, or are trying (this forum is the king of all sport bitching...it's what we do). Doing shit like what this Major did, just pulls back the scab on the wound. If you can't do something effective, do something visible!

The best is being segregated and making us watch stupid ass videos that basically say you guys are all rapists. Especially love the part with the chick who calls 911 after she brings home a dude, that she had just met in the bar (seriously, wanted to grab a dry erase board and break out the DFP process on this one). What the fuck did you think he wanted, to have some fucking tea?!?! Before you get your panties in bunch, I'm not condoning the guys actions. I would fry the dude if I had my way, rapists are the lowest form of scum. I have a problem with insulting my intelligence, by forcing me to sit through a whole day of briefings on shit I already know! Then labeling me sexist and freaking out on me, when I bring up the fact that maybe she should use a little fucking common sense and not put herself in that bad situation in the first place. Just like you shouldn't wear a shirt/bra combo that pushes your cleavage to you chin and wear a skirt that ends a foot above your knee. Then get all pissed off when guys stare at you or get the wrong idea about your intentions! I'm not sexist, I'm a realist!

On the other hand, if the AF wants to pay me ~$500 (2 drill periods) to sit in an auditorium all day and make it clear that they are not interested in my opinion, I'm cool with that. Just don't get mad when I spend the briefing surfing the web on my phone. Also, don't get pissed when someone comes in with a fake black eye and I make some comment about another fake black eye test.

But this Major is on to something, maybe I should start wearing my uniform out of regs. Then I will see if my co-workers have the integrity to correct me on my clear violation on 36-29 o'what the fuck. Hell yeah, friday shirt and morale patch for me tomorrow, maybe I'll get real crazy and put on my black boots. Next, I'll make up fraudulent charges on my DTS, just to make sure finance does the right thing and calls me on my inappropriate use of funds.

Alright, the Jack is really kicking in now...rant over!

  5. How much testing has been done to see if all of the extra gear installed on modern flight helmets reduces the margin for spinal injuries in an ejection? Having the extra weight of JHMCS and NVG's can't be good for your neck when riding the rocket.

Specifically briefed to knock off the NVG's before ejecting. As Jaded said, ejecting fast with the JHMCS...probably gonna have some neck problems. Here's hoping the Scorpion will have better results.

  6. Before we go too far with "the sky is falling" concerns: how many times has AMC discussed getting rid of the airdrop mission for c130's? Which hasn't happened (yet). AMC does lots of dumb shit (Alaska TFI) but why would we start up the 50th TFI at LRF this year so we can shut it down next year?

Why would we build brand new alert facilities at an Eagle unit, then quickly shut them down and move their jets down the road to replace A-10s at another base (only to build more Alert facilities). Why would we build up countless bases just to shut them down within a year or two. Trying to make sense of why DoD/Military/Govt does the things they do will drive you mad!

  7. I think in the upper levels of DoD these days (think cabinet level), the focus is in the $$ and not necessarily the capes. The -10 is among the most expensive airframes to operate (mostly because of its size), and there aren't many if them. Easy kill.

It's as simple as that. I really don't understand why people can't wrap their mind around this.

    4. Every KC-10 Aircraft Commander is a fully qualified/current receiver and formation pilot, and we're good at it. Not only does this give us a lot of operational options (again, on every mission we fly), it makes us better at tanking because we know how much it sucks to be snap-rolled into the sun or weather. Fun party trick: we can boom-check our own formation members to ensure the systems work before the users show.

Yet, you still do it...every fucking time!

  8. Unlike the USA most countries require new residents to speak the national language fluently. If you can't pass the test, you are gone...

    What a novel concept...

I guess it's all about expectations...corruption, bureaucracy, and narco violence are always a problem. Ironically you could say the same thing about Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, etc. Chicago had over 500 murders last year, the politicians in Springfield are some of the most corrupt and bureaucratic in the country. Would you avoid the state of Illinois because of Chicago? At least in Mexico they are honest about their corruption.

Yes, I will. I will also avoid NJ, NY and CA...CO is on shaky ground as well. A good college friend of mine has a very lucrative corporate flying gig in Chicago, but quickly moved well out into the country (northern Indiana...not Gary!), mainly for crime/tax/gun ownership reasons.

One of the big factors in deciding on the Airline career was the ability to live wherever I wanted and not have a huge affect on my earnings potential (cost of living doesn't hurt either). I will avoid living in or around any large city as much as possible (but still live within short call range). Small towns, while not totally immune to crime, are where I choose to raise a family. People are more genuine, have a greater sense of community, and generally are good, hard-working Americans. Any given day, I can roll into the barber shop and there will be 6-9 people there...no one getting a hair cut. Everyone knows everyone by name and as an aside, this is a great place to get sage advice on your next big project (the old timers seem to know a little bit about a lot!). I can stop in the town diner and my breakfast shows up just how I like it, without having to order (unless I want to get crazy and switch it up!). Crime is the exception, not the rule.

Our country is not what it once was, but it's still a damn good place to live and I would not trade it for anywhere. We have our problems for sure, but what place doesn't? I have experienced many other cultures, in many different countries...I like mine better! I can own guns, live where I chose, not taxed at a ridiculous rate, can travel freely, not worried about outside attack/drug cartels/roving factions murdering me, have a say in elections, don't fear corrupt police, can voice my displeasure with my govt., etc, etc,etc.... So I guess you could say, I have zero desire to ever leave this country, aside from deployments/occasional vacations. Even then, there is plenty to see here in the US. We have it damn good here in America! Some states...better than others.

I'm not saying that you can't find all this outside the US. For those who go looking, I truly hope you find your Shangri-La.

In the US most people assume that they leave these problems behind by moving to the suburbs or a rural area. I currently live in a rural area and work in a major city, one would think there aren't many issues. Just in the past few months there have been 26 B&Es, murders, assaults, etc all because of meth and anytime you go to a walmart it looks like a renassiance fair.

I guess that depends upon your idea of rural. The town in which I currently live, with 100 being the national average, has a murder rate of 16 and Robbery Rate of 14 (Chicago is 351 and 444, respectively). Most of the very rare murder cases, the parties knew each other (ie...domestic disturbances).

It's very difficult to escape in the SE.

AHHA! I have found your problem...

  9. Yep, bullshit Q-3s. Another reason this job's in the toilet. Do the fighter guys mutilate their their young's FEF like this too, or is this a heavy thing?

I don't even know anyone that has had a Q-2, the worst I've heard of is a Q-1 1 hit. People fuck up, we debrief it and move on...it's what we do every day. Aside from blatant safety violations (iPad charge/reading some bs briefing verbatim...are you fucking kidding me?), what does Q-3ing someone accomplish? Instrument checks are an annoyance that get in the way of actual training missions.

EDIT: Last sentence was cut off...the internet is hard.

  10. It's sad that the country has gotten to a point where you have to record everything...but at the same time, if you do, it does reveal some 'interesting' things. I'd be seriously pissed if a postal worker did this to my property.

One of our part time weapons guys is a postal worker and the stories he tells (as well as this story) are a testament to unions breeding laziness. My guess is the union will protect this person and not much will happen.

  11. I can not believe that in 2013 a system this stupid is in place to rate commissioned officers in the United States Air Force.

Dear higher ranking members how can you not be clearing this shit up so we get honest, easy to digest feedback on how to improve as leaders, managers and (some of you) warriors? This black magic nonsense helps no one.

They are more worried about not offending that 1 person in the MAJCOM who gets offended by anything they don't like/agree with. We'll move on to less important things like developing our future leaders after we can go a whole year w/o 1 person being offended.

  12. FEBs and commander directed downgrades are perfectly legal uses of the knowledge a commander gains from the results of a SIB. They are not punishment (though it may seem like it to the guy facing the FEB). How much sense would it make for a commander to find out from a safety investigation that one of his crews was screwing up by the numbers, but have no way to keep them from flying his jets again (at least not before some remedial training)?

Safety Privilege just means you can't face UCMJ or civil punishment based on the findings of a SIB, thus the whole reason an AIB is sometimes conducted.

But to fuck their entire career, even when the FEB says you're good to go? That's just plain fucked up!
