There's one aspect everyone keeps overlooking: you only get one chance in your life to fly fighters, if you're lucky. Definitely not for everyone but, if pay, hours, or lifestyle have anything to do with whether or not you want to join the club, then we don't want you and you probably won't make it anyways. There will be a time when I'm done flying fighters and I'll leave this all behind. I won't miss the long hours, all the hard work, or the stress that is intrinsic to the job. I will miss the flying, shooting the gun, lasing bombs in, Turkey shoots, BFM, roll calls, naming ceremonies, and all the shenanigans with the bros. When the time comes, I'll move on, but I'll really miss all the amazing shit I did with all the amazing people. All the hard work is definitely worth it. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

I'm not saying everyone should make a career out of it. I'm simply stating that you'll only have the opportunity to do some of the coolest shit in the world one time in your life, and it's worth it. You can always move on later down the road. Edit: I understand that, after 12 years in, those points above are all valid reasons to separate. Duck, I could have swarn that I saw it updated at the end of the month to say early to mid Jul, which we all know that just means some time later but expect it to shift again. But I'm off now and my gaf factor is about pegged with this now since they have been dragging their lovely feet on getting this out to us.

It doesn't say much good about CNN that after seeing the President tweet a rude meme, they decide the best course of action is to do some open source intel gathering in order to go after the guy who photoshopped their logo into a years old wrestling video, have him apologize, delete his account, and imply they will publicly ID him if he ever posts things they don't like in the future. Legally, it's probably a stretch to go for a criminal blackmail charge...but seriously, this is what an international news organization thinks is a good idea?!

This is an ignorant statement. The bonus is irrelevant. It's not big enough to change minds regardless of airframe, duration or current $$ involved. Did anyone imagine that closing multiple FTU squadrons would have 2nd/3rd order effects when they did so in 2009/10? No, because it was all driven by politics and no one was looking at what the AF actually needed. We went through a period where training at Luke was so backed up punks were waiting 12+ months post-UPT for their FTU, so fighters stopped dropping. There was nowhere to train them. Those of us who were CGOs back then laughed at what would happen in a few years; SQ/CCs shrugged and senior leaders drank their Kool-Aid, ignoring anyone who said the sky is falling. This is a failure of leadership, not an issue with "fighters" chasing people out the door. The AF has a culture problem in general, not just in fighters.

I've said it before in this thread and I'll say it again: I simply cannot fathom wanting to do something for such a long time and then being talked out of it because it may be difficult. JFC, you put up with all the bullshit to get to the fucking fun part and now you want to bail out! Yes, I realize I sound like Clark Griswold. Source material for all you millennial chodes that are hiding from having to do a lot of "Boldface and Ops Limits" sheets.

This is 100% what is happening at UPT right now. I've seen dozens of studs who started out wanting fighters switch their dreamsheets because "I've heard the T-1 is fun and that T-38 IP's are mean," or "I've heard from 33 IP's how awesome the C-17 is." In all seriousness there are more C-17 drivers than FAIPs in my squadron, it's pretty ridiculous, especially since they all keep trying to land at the wrong airport.

If I had to guess, it's because they shut off the pipeline when I went through (09-10.) Of the 3 guys who went T-38s in my class, one got KC-135s, one got T-6 FAIP (now BUFFs) and the other got UAVs. They combined our 3 guys with the prior (or next class, don't remember) and of those 6, only one person got a fighter (F-15s). It was like that for the entire CY, and then some. Plus all the other aforementioned stuff in the thread.

You know why this joke never gets old? Because they keep trying to do it!

Bureaucracy loves creating more bureaucracy, all I see is this space corps gobbling up a shit load of budget for little to no return. Proof will be when they launch a rocket costing $100 million and Space X does the same for $10 million...oh wait they already do.

I remember being at my first drop at ENJJPT 10 years ago as a bright eyed casual awaiting pilot training and watching a grown man cry in stage because he really wanted to fly C models and got a Viper. Fast forward 6 months later and half the class was getting predators. It's all about perspective.

I had to land a 172 on the beach once. Pretty loud bang and oil everywhere. (It turns out the engine doesn't run very when connecting rod bolts shear.) All I could really do is fly it to the scene of the accident. It was low tide and the sand was pretty compact. I just got it as slow as I could and held the front wheel off as long as I could. The FAA investigator complimented me on my landing. I told her I've had worse. Luckily, it was a cold day in FL and the beach was empty or I would have had to put it in the water. I'm sure that would have ended up on youtube too.
