Saddle up for Syria? Or Op Deny Christmas '13

Bump https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/13/world/europe/russia-syria-dead.html I really don't see how this can end well... what's our desired end state? Why are we still there? Just hedging against Iranian/Russian hegemony in the Middle East?
  2. Is anyone actually getting $800 in flight pay this month? Just checked my LES and I'm still at $700, and so is one of my buddies in the same year group. It was supposed to go up right?
  3. Yep I got an extra $17 on my mid-month pay... thanks for the 12-pack of Sam Adams, AF!
  4. True statement, my class (in '11) had less than a third. The pendulum will continue to swing as it always has.

    RIP Doc

    Damn. A toast
  6. There are also 3 FAIPs in my TPS class... F-16, B-1, and C-130 backgrounds. I think they were all T-6 FAIPs. Definitely didn't hurt their applications to have 1000+ instructor hours in a different airframe than their primary MWS.
  7. As an 08er at EDW, this is exactly what I'm curious about! Lots of solid people here in my year group who almost certainly would have been school selects. Now are we all competing with each other for a couple slots each year? Just wish someone could let us know the rules of the game up front...

    Herk Down

Now hearing 16 dead? Awful. A toast https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/07/10/military-plane-crashes-mississippi/466618001/
  9. I heard this same rumor a couple weeks ago from a fellow 08er. He's pretty well connected and generally has good gouge. He also mentioned that they may keep the "selects" they have chosen but just wait to release them until they start the usual 3849 process. It's just a matter of changing perceptions regarding the "haves and have-nots" when the O-4 results are (finally) released.

    USAF Weapons School (WIC) info

^^Same thing in the mudhen. If you make IP in your first assignment you're pretty much destined for WIC. 4FL = go teach at the FTU, still have a shot at WIC. 2FL/Wingman = ops-to-ops. The last few VMLs have been very good for staying in the jet.

    New BAH rates are out.

Sweet, Mountain Home has the 4th lowest BAH for a single captain ($993) in the entire country. Only Altus, Springfield MO, and Johnstown PA are lower. Who even comes up with these numbers? Probably the same monkey that works assignments at AFPC.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/24/turkey-shoots-down-jet-near-border-with-syria Turkey keeps it real... Raise your hand if you didn't see this one coming. Whose side are we on again?

Your sarcasm detector appears inop... Friedman is right on the money. While the fighter pilot in me (sts) is itching to see some action, I'm skeptical of the long-term geopolitical strategy at work. This threat/conflict is so much bigger than a few JDAMs can solve. I wish we had really thought about the unforeseen consequences before going kinetic. What are we actually trying to accomplish in the long-run? What's the desired end-state? Obama says he wants to destroy ISIS, that's great I think everyone agrees they deserve that fate. But has he really thought about how difficult that will be and what comes next in the region?

http://online.wsj.com/articles/obama-lays-out-plan-to-fight-islamic-militants-1410388576 Better late than never! What a difference a year makes. And now Assad is what, our ally? Maybe we'll let him dispose of any remaining chemical weapons by dumping them on ISIS. Two birds...
  15. May I recommend mint.com (also available as an app) to track all your finances/investments real-time, see where your money is going, and calculate your "net worth." Here's what it tells me (5.5 year captain pilot, single without kids or a house or debt/loans): Cash: $21k Stocks: $46k Roth IRA: $43k TSP: $22k Other investments: $34k My car: $28k (paid cash) Total value: $194k
