The Pentagons research agency tasked with developing breakthrough technologies for national security has come up with a plan for dealing with shrinking budgets: robotic flight crews.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is currently working on technology that will be able to replace up to five crew members on military aircraft, in effect making the lone human operator a mission supervisor, tech magazine Wired reported.

The Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) would offer the military a tailorable, drop-in, removable kit that would enable the addition of high levels of automation into existing aircraft to enable operation with reduced onboard crew, DARPA said.

Will it put the gear down, find the right airport or smoother air for the next plug?

Its taking the AF close to 20 years just to build a 767 Tanker based on a jet first flown in 1982!, I'm not worried, You'll all be retired way before this happens.

We'll see. The OSS/CC said something along the same lines to my UPT class in 2007 regarding UAVs dropping to studs...

You should be worried. Based on recent acquisition history, GOs will sign off on some multi-billion "revolutionary" technology in the name of efficiency/cost saving, push it towards FOC before the system is mature. Because you know, there are always block 10, 20, ## to fix the problems.

And then claim personnel costs are too high and cut the rest of us... while creating new GO billets.

We'll have to cancel another working aircraft to free up the funds, though...

Why don't they build one that can take our CBTs, do volunteer work, plan Christmas parties, and delete the worthless spam emails?

HEY...they're holiday parties. We can't go around offending people. And they're important. Jeez

Just add a rule into outlook to send all of the emails that you don't want into the junk mail folder. This is especially handy for the command post messages, and the FSS super happy fun events.

Because programming requires logic. And there is no logic to the things Big Blue requires its aircrew to do outside of flying.

It would get stuck in an infinite loop very quickly trying to integrate in to the self licking ice cream cone.
