As a future stud who’s going to Vance in Sept of next year, any advice from you all on preparation or things I could bring to the table to help my class get over the seemingly condensed syllabus?

Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

Study study study.  Study alone and study together.  Attitude is everything, walk into the flight room with a smile on your face eager to learn.  You will be criticized, a lot, learn to take it and make yourself better.  You’ll be good at something your classmate is not, help him out.  Don’t be a BF.   Unwind on the weekends, grill out and drink at someone’s house.

UPT was tough but hands down one of the most fun times of my life because my job 100% was to fly and help my bros out.  Also, realize that you’ll love whatever aircraft you end up getting.  Best of luck, you’ll all do fine.

Further, I can believe the fitness standards are dumb, while at the same time being livid that this person can take command while being so wildly out of standards.  Big Blue has told us that PT tests are important.  I've seen people denied PCS medals over a failed PT test four years ago.  I've seen people denied the ability to apply for WIC over a failed PT test seven years in the past.  And then we put someone who can't put a PT test in charge.

I don't know, maybe it's my own salt coming out that I never did anything wrong, never failed a PT test, did all the PME, etc...and this person who has either failed, or will fail, their next PT test is fit to be a commander, while the Air Force is telling me I'm in the bottom 25% of my year group by passing me over for promotion.  I'd bet my next bonus installment that she makes Lt Col out of this command slot.

Exactly.  I bet she looks good on paper though, multiple volunteer of the year wins, with getting lucky squeaking by with a 76 every time so no one bats an eye.

There were bits of info related to this question in this thread, but not as much from a ANG/AFRES perspective I could find. If looking to apply to C130 UPT boards, is it worthwhile to pay attention to whether they fly H1, H2, or H3’s? I guess my assumption is that the units flying H1s would be the first to be closed or BRAC’d in favor of units flying later H’s and J’s. Is this concern even worth thinking about?

Does this question belong in the stupid questions section?

    Any input is appreciated.

BRAC is 90% political and 10% logical to the needs of the Air Force.  I would chose a unit whose culture you see yourself in and in a location you desire.  Right now many units are upgrading the H model avionics, may go J one day or transition to another aircraft, there is no telling.

There is nowhere near the level of SA and understanding that a bomber pilot/crew has, especially regarding air threats, when conducting any type of large force, deep strike scenario that requires fighter escort when compared to their fighter brethren. I’m sorry if that hurts, but it’s the truth. I witness it every day.

And there is nothing particularly difficult with releasing smart weapons, particularly the GPS-guided variety.

A lot of bold assumptions in your post, and most of them are false.  I assume you fly hornets and I seriously hope to god you don’t have that cavalier attitude when employing your smart weapons.

Because despite not getting into high-g dogfights, those bomber guys have spent a career flying the aircraft as a weapon, integrated into a package, studying air threats and learning how to prioritize tasks in the cockpit to fly and release weapons.

So have many C-130 dudes, just replace weapons with airdrop; 5 C-130 guys who would’ve probably stayed in the Air Force just got their orders turned off to 38s.

Got the unofficial word today that fitness tests are going back to the way they used to be....in very short order.

More oversight and only a handful of people on base that can input scores.  Apparently the Air Force saw some cheating on a scale large enough to make us go back to the shitty days.

This info came up in a wing standup and from emails from the MPF.

Oh awesome.  Not a year after the push to have squadron PTLs administer tests.  We trust evaluators in the squadron to administer checkrides to aviators in a job that can kill people if not done right, but we don’t trust them to administer PT tests.  This is what happens when you let nonners (AFSC neutral term to me) run the Air Force.

Different qualification?  No. Different aptitude to teach guys going to fighters?  Yes. I know, hurt feelings and all...but the feedback I got after leaving that world was overwhelmingly that the 135 and C-17 peeps just didn’t have the same skillset in tactical, LL, FM and getting kids ready for IFF.  It’s not an insult, it’s a recognition of reality.

Whatever did they do before the T-1s when everyone went 38s? Nothing you do in 38s is remotely tactical or relevant to the skills required to fly any tactical platform in combat.  Pilot training is about teaching kids to land and build airmanship, skills relevant to any community.  The only reason they split tracks was to extend the service life of the 38.  That being said, I’m sure it is important to have your share of 11Bs and 11Fs in 38s to make sure you are getting guys ready for IFF / the B course but there is no reason not to have 11Ms considering the manning crisis.

Curious, it's been a year or two now, but the reduction in ancillary duties...has that actually hit anyone? I'd say every single extra duty that was removed has returned plus maybe one or two extras now (voting officer, records management, CNO, gate guard, DDRP, etc). The only one I was happy to see was PT testing being done in Squadron...but I honestly can't think of a single extra thing that has actually gone away and not come back.

Well anytime a nonner sends me an email telling me I need to do X CBT, if it’s not on the CSAF’s memo of the only CBTs we are required to do, I send an email back with that memo telling them I won’t do said CBT.  So far great success.

While I’ve seen a positive reduction in random additional duties, there is still no shortage of the ops group having to do the job of comm, finance, CE (try getting LZ maintenance pushed through ...), etc.

On the plus side we have hired like 15 civilians to do DTS, RA, etc so that has been awesome.

  9. Well hopefully now that they eliminated “school selects” off the board; they stop using early CGO performance to determine HPO status, cautiously optimistic rated performance boards will also shift what we value in promotions.

Question for the grey beards, how much do CGO strats matter for an 0-5 board traditionally?  I.e 1-2 average CGO strats, tons of IP/combat time, no CGO awards, late WIC grad and then a ton of major strats with Group and Wing level jobs? Asking for a friend..!

Bro, I don't know what's going on. Your PRF looked pretty darn good to me. I've got another 4 years until I'm IPZ for O-5, but I'm already debating if it's worth playing the game and hoping for the best or do what I want and focus on being a lethal pilot.

Being a lethal pilot and progressing in one’s career don’t HAVE to be mutually exclusive...yes one of those paths means flying less as you get older; but at the end of the day, don’t we want the “lethal pilots” being the ones in charge?

Any more words on this list?  I hear rumblings too about squadron leadership having it, but seems that mine is not as of yet releasing information to those specific people.  Other SQ/CC's have made their people aware.

Wing execs here have the “non select list,” but not the actual list just yet.  As mentioned before, they want to make sure they inform the non selectees prior to the selectees.

We’re looking to change our squadron call sign to better align with our heritage, but the base call sign manager says our choice isn’t legal based on AFI 33-217.

We want to use CHETR XX (pronounced Cheater).

33-217 has been rescinded according to the e-pubs website, but the call sign manager says that he has to still apply it because the Air Force level call sign manager still uses it.

Anybody got experience dealing with this?

Of course there is an AFI on callsigns and a random nonner enforcing it..

Aren’t these the kind of irrelevant regulations the SECAF and CSAF told us to get rid of?

“The source said that things reached a boiling point May 31, when Dunlop lost her temper in a meeting with senior Air Force civilians.

An Air Force civilian immediately told Ellen Lord, the Pentagon's top acquisition official, about the situation in the office, the source said, and Lord walked over to the SAPCO office and removed Dunlop.”

And that, boys and girls, should tell you everything you need to know about where you’re at in the food chain if your office includes GS employees.

Checks, also don’t cuss out your secretary if you’re a wing king.  IG complaints follow and soon after a firing.

Where are the single dudes TDY to LRAFB staying these days? Back in '16 I was at the Metropolitan (former Enclave) and liked it, so I'll go with that again unless anyone has an awesome alternative to suggest. Thanks!

Strong recommendation for the metro (enclave), if you are single, lots of attractive med student ladies there.  Now that the former rape bridge is lit up, easy walk downtown.

  15. 100% go hercs.  You won’t regret it.  You get to do all the cool tactical stuff but plenty of drone time at the FLs en route to a 5 star hotel.  Almost every herc pilot is airdrop qualified out of the get go whereas only certain C-17 units airdrop.  Both the C-17 and C-130 are incredible aircraft but I’m obviously biased.

Btw, 100A low levels are rare...both times I did it were during Weapons School sorties.  300A is standard though and a blast.

What did a Cyber Effects Officer do during all of OEF and OIF? We blew up everything electronic within the first few days during OIF. During OEF, you won't have any effects from the batteries going bad in the Taliban Speak & Spells.

Everyone likes to make fun of cyber but the effects that they bring to the fight these days are potent.  Most of the discussion is not appropriate for this forum but rest assured cyber will play a huge role in the next major war.
