  1. AD selection also isn't an easy path but yes if flying is your goal i would work both avenues. I met a guy recently who rushed the same unit for 4 years before he got hired
  2. There are no plans to add any more active duty bases, for MQ-9s at least. Creech, shaw, whiteman, ellsworth, and cannon are your likely landing spots for your first assignment. If you are planning to go guard/reserves that will add some more options.
  3. I don't think thats a sentiment held by every squadron, especially not in the heavy world. My reserve unit hired 3 folks, 2 of us were active duty captains. I think having air force knowledge does give you a slight leg up in that it made me feel more comfortable interacting with everyone, but at the end of the day they just want someone who is qualified and that they can see being stuck with for 10+ years. There were plenty of highly qualified young studs at the interview with us (ivy league college students, engineers, etc) so it’s easy to get some imposter syndrome. Just focus on making your application as strong as possible, PPL is virtually a requirement at this point, and most importantly network with people at the unit prior. Knowing people at the squadron is 100% what got my average ass to the interview phase.
  4. What are the approvals to switch units? Sq/CC? Reserve to reserve same airframe.
  5. Not an airline guy just yet but trying to understand this pay calc from airline pilot central. Specifically bid periods and percentage portion, assuming credit time is just time flown for the month.
  6. On the reserve side at least 8 or more requires a waiver. It might be a squadron initiative to require less i suppose, or maybe fighters could be less due to more required training. The waiver is easy to get approved it just depends if the squadron wants to give you a waiver.

  8. Thank you! I'm AD right now so luckily no OTS. Just trying to get a ballpark of when I will go so I can plan out my AD separation. 340th gauge still seems correct based off of what I could find online anf chatting with my reserve unit. Didn't realize SERE could be prior to UPT, good to know!
  9. Does anyone know when you will find out UPT dates after the reserve UPT board? I applied to the July board, wondering if the dates will come with that notification.
  10. Are any of the sims FAA certified at UPT? wondering if any of those hours count. From what i found searching the google, for actual jet time you will get 96 hours in the T-6 and 42.8 hours in the T-1 with UPT 2.5
  11. Going reserves from AD, wondering if I will keep my fly pay when i transition from RPA to manned? currently getting 700 bones a month, so hoping I wont lose it...

  13. Is there still a T-1 sim only (no t-6 phase) UPT syllabus? if there is, is it only for high civilian time pilots? Been to a lot of air force training programs, a short UPT would be nice I will be going reserve heavies if that helps.
  14. Dude thanks so much for this. I'm coming to the realization that it's probably going to be the airlines for me. Thats in no way a bad thing and I would be extremely grateful for that opportunity, but I spent the last 2 years working towards my MBA and using up my GI Bill so its a hard pill to swallow letting that go to waste. I guess its always go to have in my back pocket if all else goes to shit, med DQ, layoffs, etc...
  15. I will be joining a heavy squadron where nearly everyone is an airline pilot. I don't really want to be away from home constantly, so i am weighing pursing a work from home job in the corporate world. Does anyone have experience on how you are able to make this work? I know USERRA protects you in most cases but potentially being gone on longer trips frequently could make it difficult for everyone involved, especially because most civilians don't understand how the guard/reserves work. Another challenge is that I am separating from AD and going reserves, should i wait to find a job until after I get back from UPT? I cant imagine any employer will entertain the idea of a brand new hire being gone for 2 years right after they were hired. Again, i know technically i would be protected but if i tell them that's my plan in the interview, id assume they would find a reason not to hire me. Should I get hired and then tell them?
  16. Many heavy guys at my unit commute from all over the country. They will reimburse up to $500 per month in travel expenses. we have folks as far as Alaska.
  17. Yea its a formality...kind of...its really just a matter of time. The board is held quarterly, each board generally has 15 slots to give, and they are given to critically manned airframes first. If you were to not get one of the 15 slots, you would just go to the next board and try again.
