  1. Left USAA last month.

Checking/Savings moved to AMEX - getting 4.6% in a high yeild savings account and 1% interest on checking + 1 reward point/ $2 spent.

Insurance bundled housing, cars, motorcycle with Geico (Less than half the cost of what USAA was charging)

Investments are with Fidelity and always have been (I used to work for them and they are great)

I couldnt be happier - I recommend everyone to get quotes and do some research. USAA is screwing you.

  2. VAFB as of last week: Graduation limited to 50 people total. Only leadership, graduating students, and close family are aloud to attend.

Prior to last week though, drop nights and graduations seemed to be going on pretty normal with a few exceptions (no red carpet sims or RSU tours.) The mask police were out in force at drop nights.

  3. I got hammered at the Hope Hotel restaurant on Halloween night after I failed my FC1.  The bartender gave me a free drink because all the locals were dressed up in Halloween costumes partying and I was sitting at the corner of the bar solo in a sweatshirt and sweatpants with my hood up.

I ended up going back a month later and passed, the bar tender remembered me and we both took a shot together to celebrate.

Schumacher did the exact same thing on the exact same corner a lap or two later, he just got lucky and didn't crash into the wall.

Williams must love the feeling of not being last all the time!

I was disappointed a bit in Season 3 from Netflix.  Felt disjointed and they spent 5 seconds on Grosjean's crash.  They had an opportunity to talk about mental resiliency, and air some of the Grosjean interview where he talked about getting his mental health squared away, but dropped the ball. And the last episode spending 5 seconds talking about race also felt like an afterthought.

They also barely spent any time with discussing Russell's Merc run during the 2nd Bahrain race. They spent way too much time on pre-season testing and COVID drama (okay, I get it) and Lance Strolls multi billionare dad who is obviously a narcissist. Then when they realized they spent too much time on that - they didn't have enough time to go into detail on the rest of the season. Add to the fact that it was a short off-season so post-production must have been rushed too. I agree with you - It had way more potential - but I still enjoyed it overall!  I'm also on my second whiskey of the night so maybe I'm over analyzing.

This first race was exciting as hell, best I've seen in a long time.  Pumped for the season to play out!!

  5. @ryleypav

I've seen 3 months and I've seen up to 9 months for TFOT.  Keep checking in every few weeks and make sure they're actually working on it. The most annoying feeling in the world is when you call to check in a month later to find out they had everything they needed to request TFOT dates but the A1C working your paperwork forgot about you (ask me how I know)

I would also press them to request UPT dates prior to getting to TFOT. It's possible - because I've seen ANG pilot candidates get both TFOT and UPT dates at the same time.

As always YMMV but feel free to DM and I can share more.

  6. @GreenArc my paperwork had the doctor sign off saying I was qualified for service and it had all the results from my testing there too. I had to reference it when my opt said I initially failed my DP test (I passed when I was at MEPs).

As for the SG, I imagine the short answer is - it depends.  It sounds like you got waivered at MEPs for general military service, and obviously WP may have different standards depending on what the condition is since WP is trying to qualify you for flight service specifically. Since he already waivered you I would bring all of the paperwork with you to WP without a doubt and read the AF waiver guide here.

  7. Disappointed with Haas as well - but to be fair there clearly wasn't any American companies willing to back them either - which is disappointing in and of itself. Overall, I would rather see them in the sport than not - this is a quick/temporary fix to get through 2021 and then hopefully 2022's new rule changes will bring a better/more competitive car. More points = more money and attracts more investment. That being said - hopefully Nikita Maz is a disaster in 2022 and then they can move on from their Russian influence.  They're playing the short game to be able to play the long game in the future.

  8. Update: After TFOT I found out I had an 8 month gap between graduation and the start of UPT (starting this June at Vance) So I had to get another job to cover my gap.

I ended up finding an employer in the finance industry that has a great military leave program and I met a few employees who have used it before in the guard with no issues. In other words, everything worked out great. Thanks again for the support.

  9. Elaborating off @jazzdude Seems like a pretty simple/easy fix for those wind turbines

Have the turbines generate their own power for an internal block heater within the engine nodes and then run de-icing boots along the leading edge of the blades like on a turboprop airplane.

    Disclosure: not an engineer

  10. https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket?ProjectID=100356

The NTSB released a docket on the accident a few days ago.

Credit to the CT ANG crew chief. He saved 3 or 4 lives according to his statement and the others.  A true hero.

The PAX statements are damning - the Collings Foundation will cease to exist when this is all over.  They'll have to liquidate everything and I don't think they'll come close to paying the lawsuits they are going to face.

  11. If anyone can help this guy out he is 100% deserving. We've tried multiple different routes to try and get a re-test and have gotten no where. He has now passed the DP test at his home unit and at others and yet for some reason they will not get back to @Notamig for a re-test at Wright-Pat.

Can anyone shed light on what would happen if he just showed up to optometry at WP and sat in the waiting room until a doc was available? I debated doing this myself, but I was offered a re-test and didn't need to.

Does a Guard appointment letter indicate that your package has been approved by NGB? I also went to MEPS in June, still waiting on FC1 though. Last update from my unit seemed to indicate that they were waiting on the appointment letter, and that would generate OTS/UPT dates, which would in turn let them send me to wright pat for FC1?

@TotableMink Negative. I haven't heard of anyone who has gotten OTS/UPT dates before getting an approved FC1. I believe @FOX3 is correct by saying you need an appointment letter to request an FC1 though, or something along those lines.

  13. Completed Timeline: 2 years and 4 months from hire to UPT

Most of my guard buddies at TFOT were tracking 8 to 9 months between graduation of TFOT and start of UPT, with some exceptions.

    Guard/Fighter - Non-Prior

    Hired: March '19

    MEPS/Enlistment: June/July '19

    FC1: October '19 (Failed)

    FC1 Re-Test: December '19 (Passed)

    FC1 Stamped Approved: December '19

Package sent to NGB: February '20

    TFOT: August 25th

    UPT: June 2021 (Vance)

  14. I hate to sound like a commercial here but seeing this post peaked my interested and got me to call Geico - and now I'm switching.

I had some bad experiences with USAA, most recently with my car buying experience last February - and the insurance policy I just got with Geico is $80/month cheaper with all coverage's remaining the same as I had with USAA.

I've been with USAA for over a decade - feels weird to change things up.
