  1. Seems to be a trend across the board at the moment. I think you are correct that the various management groups are outplaying the various pilot groups these days. The strategy seems to be: avoid any real negotiations, maybe throw in a small pay raise in the form of an extension or short term (~2yr) contract to keep pilots satiated, and wait for the next recession/downturn to roll around so you can cry poor and negotiate a long term concessionary contract. Lots of pilots seem to be having trouble seeing the long term play here. Also, ever since the APA got sued years ago, unions have been very timid in providing any kind of direction to their membership. There was once a time that certain phrases (do the work of one pilot, fly YOUR line, no waivers, no favors, etc) actually meant something and you’d see whole pilot groups pulling in the same direction (taxiing at a “safe” speed, strictly flying the flight plan (ie no shortcuts), never blocking out early, not picking up open time). Those days are largely gone & there doesn’t seem to be much fight in the unions anymore. I think that might be a symptom of a largely older pilot group that has a lot to lose if labor relations sour and a lot to gain by picking up extra flying & padding their retirement funds. Maybe things will change a bit as more of the old guard retires.
  2. Oh, come on. You know very well that many will slip through our woeful social safety net and even the ones who manage to take advantage of all we have to offer will slip so far behind they’ll never recover, AND they’ll be criticized as a drain on society by the very people forcing their morals on them. I can’t tell if you missed my point or are being purposely obtuse. In either case here it is one more time: The anti-abortion movement in this country is filled with some of the most hypocritical assholes on the planet. The generalization that pro-lifers only care about life until conception is rooted in truth. Some of y’all need a lesson from George:
  3. Are you in favor of providing any kind of support for those women who choose to carry to term? Many are single and can’t afford to leave the work force for any significant period of time. Or should we just force them to work through their pregnancy if they want to keep their job? Maybe give them a day or two off to actually give birth? What about mental health support for things like postpartum depression? Think most of these women have great healthcare plans? Yeah, yeah, guess they should’ve thought of that before they decided to be promiscuous (typically uttered by dudes that would’ve banged pretty much any available warm hole in their 20s).
  4. Not a UAL guy but from my perspective, their TA looks like a giant turd. Hope they vote it down and find a way to negotiate something better. Rising tide lifts all boats and all that.
  5. Ah, no. I answer to a lot of things; asshole, dick, f-ing asshole, f-ing dick (my wife will confirm). But I will not be labeled a nav! 😜 I used to fly Sua to work so he could lie on his stomach and pass gas. I was under the impression I was his bestest pilot, but I think he also told BQZip’s mom that he loved her, so I guess you just can’t trust that guy’s compliments!
  6. WTF dude, I wasn’t either of those. 😎
  7. I’ll go one better and say their parents likely played a large role in the entitlement attitude. I agree with you that there are some major disconnects between the younger and older generations when it comes to ambition, work ethic, and intestinal fortitude. The stereotypes are definitely grounded in reality. At the same time, there are some very real obstacles that have been placed in their way and most of us would rather bicker over pronouns, windmills, and purple teletubbies than address issues that will have huge and lasting effects on the future of this country. I don’t have all the solutions but here’s one to start with: Want your college loans forgiven? Done, but the catch is two years of national service. Sort of a neo-GI Bill to jumpstart the new generation.
  8. Uh, so your position is gay couples can’t rear children/act as a family? There are thousands of gay couples (not to mention their children) who would strongly disagree with you. Why should spouses and children be denied benefits afforded to others just because of their sexual orientation? That sounds like the very definition of bigotry.
  9. Yeah, me too, but they can have a high failure rate and still get a lot of warheads in the air. Not a discussion for this board but I often wonder what our non-kinetic capes are WRT the period between Putin giving the order and missiles in the air.
  10. Side note: Had this exact conversation with my 14 year old yesterday as we watched an episode of “For All Mankind”. Great show for those who haven’t seen it. Posits the Soviet’s beat us to the moon & the space race heats up big time, leading to massive & rapid technological development. Maybe some great power competition is good for us. On the flip side, the renewed threat of mutual nuclear annihilation kinda sucks.
  11. Sorry, but not all opinions are created equal. Example: There is still a sizable number of people on this planet that hold the ‘opinion’ that women are chattel. While they certainly are entitled to hold that opinion, holding those views mean that most of us are going to consider them backwards thinking Neanderthals. This train of thought may have been far more prevalent a couple centuries ago but the world has moved on. You can refuse to move with it, but don’t be surprised when your offensive worldview is challenged. Sometimes that means there isn’t a place for you anymore in our institutions that have seen the light.
  12. This guy articulates many of the issues better than I can: BL: Every generation is gonna act in its own best interest. The boomers are an outsized generation and have had an outsized effect that is causing challenges for later generations. Zeihan has some interesting takes as well:
  13. Can’t wait for you to enlighten us on this one. For the folks who insist homophobia no longer exists in the military, consider this post exhibit one.
  14. Agree 100% but let’s not forget that, for the most part, the boomers have been equally ignorant and obtuse. The ultimate “me” generation’s attitude of “I got mine” has laid landmines for successive generations throughout their time in power. Is it any wonder that the millennials and younger gens feel disillusioned and shafted? Why should they care if they’ve been more or less shut out of participating in the economy and politics anyway? If we want them to look up from their phones and off of mom’s couch, we need to listen to their issues and take them seriously. Instead, they watch us fight over petty cultural issues and shake their heads as their future slides further and further out of reach.
  15. Man, you guys played the watered down, G rated version. When I was there it was the same except you didn’t go to Green Bean. You went back to your Q and attempted to, uh….poach your own egg. You know, shake hands with Mr Winky, wax your dolphin, burp the worm, do the five finger shuffle, flick the bean (if you’re a lady). If you managed to….how to put it……finish, you won!
  16. On that we agree. I wouldn’t expect him to ever be “smart enough” do do anything other than put himself first though.
  17. Careful counting your chickens before they roost. Lots of Dems were thinking the same thing in 2016.
  18. Yeah, but don’t forget: he was right about Manbearpig!
  19. Well, he campaigned for, and articulated his platform for the office. DeSantis has yet to even announce he is running, and I think it’s very likely he will be upstaged by the Donald and won’t run. When and if he does announce his campaign, I’ll make an evaluation then. How can I say I’d vote for him or not vote for him when I have no idea what his (currently nonexistent) presidential platform entails?
  20. How’d you get that from my post? I never said I don’t think he’s qualified. My point was that he’s not running for president (yet) and he hasn’t articulated how he would act should he become president. Until he does, I’ll reserve judgement.
  21. Honestly don’t know all that much about DeSantis and running Florida certainly isn’t the same as running the country. I wouldn’t commit to making that call until I see his presidential platform IF he runs. I’m willing to listen with an open mind though.
  22. I think you misunderstood my argument. Green is certainly the future, but we are talking a generation or more down the road. A “fast switch” is impossible and Dems are irresponsible when they sell it that way. We need to invest in current AND future infrastructure and come to terms with the fact that the changeover will be gradual. But it will happen. Batteries will get more efficient, solar roofs will become the norm, greenies will realize nuclear solves a lot of problems, and fusion reactors may even come on line in a few decades. In the meantime, the world still runs on diesel and that fact needs to be acknowledged.
  23. Nice to see a well thought out criticism of current policies that doesn’t rely on over generalizations, memes, or an attempt to “own the libs”. As someone who voted for Biden (and would again given the same opponent), I agree with just about all of this. I’m fully onboard with green energy. There is no doubt that it is the future and the US has the potential to be the world leader in its development. It will create thousands of jobs and billions in wealth. We should be investing heavily in R&D and infrastructure development. But the timeline that’s being sold by the Democrats is cuckoo for coco puffs. California says it’s banning ICEs as of 2035. Not to be outdone, Washington state says it’ll do the same in 2030. These policy goals are almost as outlandish and counterproductive as “defund the police” and Democrats should know better. Problem is, the running argument on the right is equally extreme. We need responsible policymakers who land somewhere in between “climate change is a hoax, roll coal baby!” and “electric cars are here today, next up: banning cow farts”.
  24. Same reason you have to go get a single pilot check ride in a Dutchess to get an ATP even though you might be currently flying a four engine heavy around the world and your mil form 8 is far more relevant to transport flying than the worthless three days you just got to spend in a light twin. Some shit will just never make sense.
