I'd have to agree. But I think part of the reason that myth is still around is because all those stories from Uncle Charlie, and others of his generations, who didn't get selected for the Aviation Cadet program back in 1942 and ended up shoveling shit in Louisiana and missed out on WWII. These stories get repeated and repeated and then somehow become cold stone truth. Along with other "facts" like when someone's best friend's second cousin's dog talks about how things "really" work. Like everything in the BX is a nickle, dime, quarter because that's how it was back when old man Smith down the street had it when he was in the Army back in 59'.

It's not Friday but... Today, April 18th, marks the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. Sixteen B-25B Mitchell bombers, led by Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, took off from the USS Hornet in the early morning daylight on an assignment to strike the heart of Tokyo just five months after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the raid inflicted a rather minor level of physical damage on Japan, it gave a much-need boost to morale in the U.S. and to the warfighters. Eighty men volunteered and participated in the raid, and all but three crew members initially survived the mission. Eight airmen were captured by the Japanese in China, and three were later executed. Fourteen full crews, except for one crewman who was killed in action, returned either to the United States or to American forces. The raid played a major role in developing America’s perception of airpower and aviation. But it will also be remembered for its daring, and for the courage of the crewmembers who volunteered to risk their lives for the country they loved. Today, at the National Museum of the US Air Force, retired Lt. Col. Richard Cole, Doolittle’s co-pilot and sole surviving Doolittle Raider, will conduct the traditional “Goblet Ceremony” honoring those Raiders who died the previous year by overturning the Goblet belonging to retired SSgt. David Thatcher. Let's all remember and salute the Raiders, their historic, mission and continue to preserve the legacy of the Greatest Generation. To the Raiders!

They hang at the mall because the only contact they have with their grandchildren is the obligatory mass-produced Christmas card/photo they get from their now estranged adult children once a year. See, years ago mama left the service member while he was deployed (again) and got full custody of the kids. Convinced by her bitch also divorced friends that it’s in the kid’s best interest, and to make the adjustment as smooth as possible, that they have minimal/no contact with their bio-father. Then, now-divorced mom meets and marries a nice guy with a “regular” job. You know; 40-hour week, home each night at a reasonable time for dinner and able to go to soccer games/school picnics/dance recitals, etc… and this guy is now defacto dad because “he was there” during those developmental years when the kids “needed” a father figure in their lives. All these vets have is the mall, war stories, flat cheap beer at the VFW and of course, a handle of Military Special Whiskey in the new improved non-breakable plastic bottle from the local Class VI. All this and only half his retirement check cause she got that too.

Well you can't expect the wives of the CC and DO to reschedule that important bunco championship or candle party do you? Thank goodness I never had to deal with that crap as an E on the MX side of the house.

British Royal Navy seriously looking at that option to man their new "Big Deck" Queen Elizabeth class carriers. They too gutted their force for the quick and easy cost savings and its now coming back to bite them in the ass. Imagine being in your late 50s and getting called back... Holy Cow... Check back issues of AOPA Pilot, there was a multi page article on those guys a few years back. Focused on guys flying twin otters in the Caribbean seemed like a cool gig.
