  1. He admitted it wasn't perfect and they're still working a lot of the bugs out of it, but compared to the 16 and 18 (hawgs a diff story) the new capabilities it brings to the fight are game-changing.

    Exactly what game changing capabilities does it bring to the fight?

  2. We could have all the platinum-plated toys in the world, but if we don't have people who are trained, motivated, and supported well to operate those toys we are doomed. Conversely, highly motivated, trained, and supported airmen can do wonders even with only average equipment.

    Shack. I'm constantly struck by people who forget the human element and continuously double down on the idea that if we just get the right equipment everything else will be successful. Philosophically it's akin to the E-8 who thinks enforcing uniform standards is corollary to mission success. The AF love affair with technology is closer to religious zealotry than military strategy. I could do succssful ISR with binoculars, strike with hand grenades or airdrop with a a sectional (while VFR!) and so could anyone who is a reasonably competent aviator filled with a burning desire to win. The great AF fail, which this author can't see, is the total mismanagement of and inability to identify the handful of people in every career who passionately want to win.

    I love my gadgetry, but it reaches a point where the time spent troubleshooting exceeds the time saved. At that point, it takes leadership and experience and drive to win the fight regardless. The AF continues to attract people who are capable of exactly that, I work with them and have been fighting with them for a decade. Unfortunately over time the system rewards the risk adverse and administratively minded instead of the warrior. I don't know how to change it, but i know it can be changed.

  3. The ability to operate without any assistance for safe separation from clouds, the surface...... That's a blank check bulletproof fully valid reason to be VFR during a training mission except when to do so is in violation of peacetime airspace or regulations.

    I have heard people say they were unable to accept tasking because of wx followed by a dozen properly trained guys working the same target area before and after them. That is a foul. Always has been and always will be. Especially with all the magic available to a pilot today.

    Good point, and I've never landed somewhere uncontrolled down range..... It's been done but not by me. I go to these little places stateside because there aren't many towered fields with slopes, turns, impossible TERPS, crumbling infrastructure, etc. to accurately simulate places I need to get into at times overseas. And honestly, a lot of it is just for fun.

    I'm not talking about accidentally landing at an uncontrolled field, and I'm not talking about landing on a dirt strip in dirka-dirka stan. I'm talking about filing to and landing at an uncontrolled CONUS field - the subject of this thread.

    I land at uncontrolled CONUS fields all the time for various training purposes. In just the past 6 months I've been to 57B, AVX, 2NC0, L05, 1Z1.....Literally hundreds of uncontrolled fields in the past 8 years. Partly because the opportunity has presented itself and I enjoy it, but also because keeping the VFR skill set sharp is relevant to my job.

    the 1994 law expired in 2004 (which wasn't that long ago) & the gun grabbers tried hard to make it permanent. I'm sure they'll try to disarm us again soon. Your argument is a failure.

A non-tactical background pilot I flew with last summer went on a tirade about what a rogue Joe Jackson was for landing his C-123 at a closed airstrip against orders and that he should never have been awarded a MoH for such a blatant violation of flight discipline...so you never know what some folks might find of value.

    Some people need to be slapped.

  8. There is a degree of irony here. Everyone who is proclaiming that they would have saved the day with a CCP...what's to stop you from being the shooter in the theater? Not advocating gun control, but that is a difficult question to answer. This is an academic argument, if you come at me with you would never do such a thing, I'll skim past that. Focus on the logic of tolerating a CCP policy vice gun control. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts. If a citizen legally purchased arms, and discharged them in a public forum...and you take that person down, with legally purchased arms...are we not on a merry go round?

    This is the single dumbest post I've ever read. What's to stop you from pulling a 9/11 everytime you fly? What prevents me from plowing into the line of pre-schoolers waiting for the bus when I pick up my son? If someone buys a hammer from Home Depot, then hits people with that hammer and is subsequently stopped by a person carrying another legally purchased hammer, are we not on a merry go round?

    We'll never know if CCW could have prevented this. All we know for certain is that existing laws failed to. If someone is determined to break the law, why on earth would you think making additional laws can stop them?

  9. I know this a little bit on the sensitive side as far as all this info, but what's the difference between the U-28 and MC-12 then?

    Having worked extensively with both, the difference is night and day.

  10. On the surface, it seems like agreat idea to have a new type of award to recognize a new type of combat. I've been working with some shit hot MQ-9 guys recently who deserve recognition for what they do. That said, our awards process is already totally fucked and most manned aircraft aren't recognized for simialrly unfucking ground assaults, going winchester, buddy lazing other platforms and finishing with jackpot EKIA.... which happens on the regular.

    Since the AF awards process is already a total fail I'm not sure if contributing another ribbon means much, but it's better than doing nothing and the current situation where national level objectives are being prosecuted by people who aren't recognized or afforded career advancement for doing important shit is unacceptable.

  11. Please also note my notion that it doesn't have to be bad and it is typically worse if your attitude is negative.

    100% valid that a bad attitude makes bad things worse. That said, I'm loving life at HRT and enjoy my job which for now doesn't have Clovis in the future; so I'm not comfortable telling guys at CVS for years on end that it's all what you make it & they need to suck it up.

    This is terrible. Someone should do something about it.

    Moving anyone's family to someplace that remote, for years on end, while deploying the spouse for 1/2 the time is going to cause complaints. Your notion of "it used to suck then, so you shouldn't complain about it sucking now" is noted.

    Concur. I'm tired of fighting in shitty places. Syria is beautiful, nearby countries are mostly nice places to base from and it's filled with assholes. I'm game anytime, but I don't think this one is going anywhere.

    Copy, but they were in Clovis back when assignments really were only 3 years (none of mine have been that short) and there were tons of other places for F-16 guys to PCS. An AC130W (for example) dude is stuck in CVS till he gets a school slot or a RIF or a crossflow. Similar with other airframes. AFSOC tends to homestead guys; not uncommon for me to find 03's with 8 years at HRT.

    HURLBURT FIELD — An Air Force CV-22 Osprey assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing crashed during a routine training mission Wednesday evening.

    All five airmen aboard were injured, said Master Sgt. Kristina Newton, a spokeswoman for Hurlburt Field. Three of the airmen were flown to local hospitals and two were taken by ambulance, Newton said.

    The extent of their injuries had not been released as of 10 p.m.

    The Osprey crashed on Eglin Air Force Base’s reservation north of Navarre about 6:45 p.m.

    The aircraft, a cross between a helicopter and plane, is noted for its ability to take off and land vertically.

    A board of Air Force officials will investigate the accident, according to the public affairs office for the 1st SOW.

    More information will be released as it becomes available, Newton said.

    The first operational CV-22 was delivered to the 1st SOW in January 2007.
