  1. Feel bad for the guy and his family. What a tragedy.

Then again, that's just the police version of events...

Yup. Who knows what really happened? I've seen enough now that my knee jerk reaction is no longer to trust the first version of events I hear given by the party most interested in self preservation.

  2. Squadron Buy. Actually, trying to organize a buy for a whole community, about 400 folks. Top choices are a good 1911 model, like Springfield, etc, but I've also tried just going back to Sig because I love them, and they have a good selection. If anyone has a contact or is a vendor that can offer a discount (we'd be looking at ~100 weapons minimum), please PM me.

Looking for pistols and rifles, with the option to tag a unit symbol on the weapon.

Just saw an email today for the buy; I think it will be popular and at those prices I might be getting 3! Well done.

  3. Bag of human shit. Not a 130 guy but apparently there is a bucket with a bag in it that you poop in. Protocol dictates you have to carry it off the airplane. Don't know why the FE doesn't do it if they are so fucking important.

    Thank you for that story!

  4. I seriously don't understand the difference between gay marriage and plural marriage, marriage amongst siblings, etc.

I think that was exactly the point Huggy was making; which was mocked but never addressed. So without emotion, can someone tell me what exactly the limits are WRT marriage? It seems we all agree dead people are out. What about 4 brothers, all consenting adults?

  5. So we'll give weapons to the rebels in support of their fight against Assad (but make sure only the 'good' rebs get them), but we are prosecuting Eric Harroun for fighting with the rebels (at one point he was allegedly with a group labeled as an AQ affiliate....allegedly).

    ?

Makes about as much sense as restricting my right to own firearms while simultaneously selling thousands directly to the Mexican mafia.

  6. What model(s) were you considering?

G19 for an EDC kind of gun. Haven't been able to actually hold a G4 yet, don't know why the dual recoil spring would be beneficial on a 9mm, but keeping an open mind. They aren't that much more expensive.

  7. From the article: "It showed that he had participated in missions that contributed to the deaths of 1,626 people."

"Contributed" is a key word IMO. I "contributed" to ending the Cold War, and the effort in OIE/OEF (and from the looks of it about to re-contribute again)...doesn't mean I put a spot down on somebody/something and drove-in a kinetic action or won the war single handed.

All number fucking aside, I call shenanigins on him even being on-sta for that number of EKIA. Maybe that was the entirety of all ops the SQ supported the entire time he was assinged there? Who would even track that number? Claiming kills not your own is shameful; but then, so is talking to the media.

  8. ^ this

New guys are timid because leadership discourages aggressiveness. The push is always to make the conservative decision. Sq leadership isn't held accountable for mission failure, so that shit never rolls downhill. You've all heard this mantra in its various forms.......

Combine that with the rampant CYA attitude in today's Air Force & you have a Petri dish for breeding timidity.

Valid points and I understand the new guy mentality and don't blame them--- I blame their bosses and a system incapable of picking the right bosses. Like I said: combat success/failure is not connected to career success/failure. If that could be fixed a lot of the rest would work itself out naturally. And yes, most communities are insulated from the ground user. But realize you can pick up a phone anytime and call them post mission just to ask "how could we improve?" Not doing that is on you, not your leadership and is part of that whole assertiveness thing I was talking about. I can blame bosses and systems all day long but ultimately you must ask what you have the power to fix, and focus efforts accordingly. I can't fix the system. I can teach a new AC to pick up the phone, call the user and harness that innate desire to excel that got you into a rated slot to start with.

  9. It's also interesting to note the decline in experience in communities...retention dropped 30% in CSAR from the previous FY, and TARS dropped 2.5 years worth of experience. Someone should correlate that to mishap rates and see if anything significant shows up.

Anecdotally from my own experience I don't think there's a direct correlation between the younger crew force and mishaps. But there is something just as bad as mishaps the AF doesn't track and can't quantify- mission success or failure. I see young guys all the time making poor choices resulting in failure, but the plane lands safely so it's never more than a brief discussion. But mission fail at the tactical level over and over does have strategic ramifications.

For example, I see guys not being aggressive enough or not knowing how to be assertive during the limited opportunities we have to action objectives. I see guys weather cancel all the time when truthfully, the mission could still be safely accomplished. I see guys who can't do their fragged mission for some reason (WX, MX...etc) who outright cancel instead of looking around the AO, talking to the user and seeing what could be salvaged from the day. These are general examples. The truth is there are terrorists walking around right now who survived our strikes because we sent guys too young and inexperienced into the most challenging tactical situations with inadequate preparation. Or we sent guys who never should have been upgraded but were anyway to continue feeding the machine.

Bottom line, I don't see young guys crashing planes. I see them being timid. I see them unable to accomplish missions where the script isn't followed precisely. And what's worse- I see many of them continue on with successful careers after shaming themselves with incompetence in combat. I think the biggest problem with our Air Force is the inability to tie combat success/failure to career success/failure; were that issue fixed most others would resolve themselves.

  10. You mean the Herc guys popping flares over the base due to the burn pit?

No, that wasn't a problem with him (and everyone with the same gear had the same issue; hence SPINS dictating a certain altitude associated with that system). He actually published a NOTAM at ORBD that all C130 departure and arrivals would be filmed by a camera crew because he thought we flew too low and didn't approve of us banking past 30 degrees. Didn't believe our patch who explained to him what we were doing and how we were trained & couldnt understand why a 105k H3 flew a different departure than a 155k E. Each day he would review any departures his E9 (tape monitor) thought were too 'tactical' involving speeds, altitudes or bank angles he was uncomfortable with and would subsequently chew out the crew. I have first hand experience with this process... But no hard feelings.

  11. He was the Wing King at Balad when I was there in '05/'06. Down to earth guy who was respected by everyone.

I was also there & recall some growing pains when -130s first showed up. Things ended up being fine, but there were a few months of pain for airlift guys.

  12. Tami was a dirty little whore that ######ed me over; there is not a day goes by I don't curse that bitch. Don't get me wrong. When I joined (OTS as well), you couldn't have found a more positive, I'm here for 20 type of a dude. Here we are 10 years later and you can reread my post to see where I'm at. Granted, I took it in stride basically following the mantra of "blossom where your planted" crap. I was optimistic that I would crawl out of the other side like Andy Dufrain; unfortunately our "pipe of shit" has no exit except to punch the hell out ASAP. I didn't go fly UAV shit. I ended up in airplanes, upgraded through evaluator, and am now an IP in another MWS. Being optimistic, having the best attitude, and working my ass off has helped me out a lot but the shit keeps flowing from Big Blue. Just for perspective, I have a friend from OTS (TAMId together) that is paroled from UAV hell and is back in F-16's (yeah, it's happened once or twice only). He is sharp dude with excellent potential yet he regrets being a school select and being back in the jet (vice UPT or some other easier to find job in the guard). He wants the ###### out too! As a matter of fact, I don't know a single person even thinking about staying. Not one. You made the right choice with the Reserves; I chose wrong.

May I ask which community you ended up in post TAMI?

  13. and also the Pilot/Controller Glossary.

when ATC calls out traffic to you, and you see the traffic, the proper response is "Traffic in sight". The word "Visual" does not appear in the PCG.

Valid, but it does appear in AFTTP 3-2.5 BREVITY & I'd rather guys use that properly than read the PCG.

Allow me to express a preference for Glock over a high end 1911 for your purposes. I think you'll have more participation using quality brands at reasonable prices.
