  1. It is true, the Caravan is not known for its speed - but it will give you some good station/loiter time (admittedly, I have not flown the armed -208 variant that is much heavier...) Fantastic little plane to beat up a dirt LZ with (and VERY forgiving).
  2. From the main page of the site, click on BROWSE BY REGION - it will list the States/territories and # of jobs posted in each - then simply click on the one you are interested in and it will list those units/job vacancies... -- doesn't fix the above problem, but is another quick and easy way to filter...
  3. All, I have been feverishly working on standing up a new (more modern, feature-rich) site to post all of the aviation jobs. Voila! GuardReserveJobs.com was born in April and the doors finally were opened last night. All of the previous (200+) baseops aviation jobs have moved over to this new site. Why the new site? The old site, although functional, was cumbersome and lacked functionality. The new site (guardreservejobs.com) looks like a monster.com and shares many of those features - database driven so you can search by crew position, geo-location, keyword, etc. Users can create accounts, post resumes, etc. Employers (units) have full control over their own Job Vacancy listings and post them live directly to the server. I could go on and on... Let me know what you think...
  4. Would it be useful if I moved all of the data on the current (static) Aviation Glossary page to the Wiki section where everyone can edit live? Baseops USAF Glossary
  5. A second mass PM spammer was found 4/11/09 and has been removed (Username = muzrinkl DO NOT OPEN ANY PMs FROM THIS USER) This security flaw is being addressed by an impending software security patch and mass PMs will be disallowed. Thanks for your patience on this issue.
  6. Well, as most of the board members know, the forums were compromised yesterday by a piece of filth spammer. This individual, after signing up for an account, proceded to send out well over one hundred Private Messages (PMs) to members. His PMs contained links to "bad neighborhoods" on the web including adultfriendfinder and malware sites. First, I do apologize to any and all that followed the illicit links and hopefully nobody's PC is permanently jacked. I unfortunately, did not delete the spammer's account until the evening hours. I have received many messages from users that are 1.) angry 2.) feel violated 3.) want to inflict painful revenge 4.) concerned about the site's security. There is reason for concern - but in the right context. This guy was a spammer - a pretty clever one. There are many out there; Russia (or at least .ru domains) are a hot bed for illicit online activity. Also, one must assume that since this site is in the www domain that it is accessed by all nationalities for any and all purposes (good intent as well as dubious ones). If we keep our head on a swivel and ensure what we post is neither classified nor sensitive, we can protect ourselves. Lastly, one must always be cautious before clicking on links - that is probably superfluous advice at this time, but noteworthy nonetheless. There are a few more parameters that I can tweak to crank up the security of the site, but it comes at a cost to the user (less freedom of movement, etc.) Hope it doesn't come down to that - but I will do it if I have to... Just goes to confirm what we already know, Russians are good at two things - Spam and Mail Order Brides. Feel free to comment below. v/r BASEOPS
  7. Had this condition several years ago - had to option of taking the pills (would have DNIF'd me back then) - instead opted for the topical treatment (apply Selsun-Blue creme over affected area) and it worked! Bottom Line - the pill will DNIF you while you are on the meds; topical ointment will not.
  8. Option is not available for "NEW USER"s - after several posts you will become "REGISTERED USER" and have that option available.
  9. A friend of mine is a Reservist and also works for Jepp -- he told me about this program and provided details. I simply put it all on a webpage - since Jepp did not have a webpage dedicated to this offer... Break -- Break For the Young-Bucks out there that want to learn more about the historical context of DOD FLIP versus Jepp plates and their use by USAF, read up on the AF 737 crash in Dubrovnik with Commerce Secretary Ron Brown on board (Jepp approach without required navigation equipment on board) in April 1996 and the subsequent investigations and cover-ups. For you consipiricy theorists, check out this article about the Brown crash.
  10. Just started Crossfit this week. Wanted to change things up from my usual workout - and it has been a change indeed! The workouts (so far) have been good with a lot of soreness being inflicted. Definitely a change of pace and I am usually winded and in the feeble three-point-stance when I am finished. Fosters healthy competition too, which makes each workout interesting. I also like the fact that I won't know tomorrow's workout until I log on to the site tomorrow (can be an unpleasant surprise!)
  11. I'll be at MacDill as well. Hope to hand out copious amount of Baseops.Net neck lanyards to all supporters out there. Also anticipating my kids shoving tons of FOD into unsuspecting throttle quadrants of static display aircraft!
  12. NICE. Pretty clever patch idea.
  13. Yeah - you need to be a Major-select. Then all you have to do is apply via the AU secure website (via the Portal). I don't give out any career advice since I'm not a Company Man like Toro, but I would recommend guys sign up for this course right after they get their line number. Waiting too long can hurt you - IF you have aspirations to be selected for School in residence as an O-4... You hit the nail on the head, though -- this program is great for slackers like me that never got their Masters (following the guidance of Johnny Jumper) then suddenly realized there was work to be done... Kill two birds with one painless but annoying stone. Guess it will take another VMI-grad SECAF to remove the silly Masters requirement again...
  14. Well - seems like this thread has been hijacked by the SOS Crowd. But, if anyone out there is interested in the ACSC/Masters Distance Learning (DL) Course, I literally just finished it a few weeks ago (just in bloody time, if you know what I mean) and here are my random thoughts on this course: --It's a long one, took me about 2 years, from the time I started, I did back-to-back courses all the way through and even double-pumped two courses one term. --There are TEN total courses plus your Research Thesis (25 pages +-5). --Each course takes 8 weeks, you can take more than one at a time (not recommended) but all courses start and end on the same day (the terms are all synched up). --You can pick (somewhat) what order you would like to take your courses; some have prerequisites. --Each course contains 7x weekly online discussion questions (forum format), approx 2x papers (1x800 words, 1x1800 words), some courses have a powerpoint assignment as well. --There are ZERO tests in this course -- all "exams" are papers or powerpoint assignments. --The classes are all tied to the Eastern time zone (e.g. each week's classes start Monday morning (EST) and end Sunday night (EST). This can be a bummer for deployed guys on a totally independent optempo and battlerhythm. --You must log on to the internet as a minimum to download your assignment/readings and to post your discussions and/or submit assignments. --In the end you get credit for: JPME Phase 1, ACSC, and a Masters Degree -- did I mention it is free with no need for educational assistance and zero ADSC gained? --Overall I thought it was better (read: less work) than the cookie cutter Torou Univ online Masters. --You get to pick your topic for your Thesis (as long as it gets approved) - please don't be the umpteenth guy that writes about the AF PT Test!!!! --You have to buy all of your books (or share with buddies that are in the other courses). Here are some things I found annoying in the course: --Getting docked a few points because I listed my instructed as COL instead of Col. on my paper cover sheet (I like the Army way better than the AF way) --Having to explain to my classmates why the GWOT is a SOF-centric war --Having to explain to my classmates that there is a war going on outside of IZ and AF --Listening to people who actually believe that the conventional air force is waging war in cyberspace I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions.
  15. All, I just finished a complete re-write of the Baseops.Net home page. To the casual observer, it may look nearly identical to the old home page. Upon further review it is a bit less cluttered, and a little better organized (based on the sheer volume of content presented). What I did was write the page from the ground up -- this time completely in notepad just for the heck of it -- and I used .CSS for my formatting. This did several things: a.) reduced the page size by at least 67%, b.) followed the standard convention in the use of CSS to separate mark up from content, and c.) let me bring me modernize my coding a bit (thru the use of CSS) - especially in light of the various heckling that my primitive code received... Bottom Line: the page should load up quicker, and (hopefully) is better organized. All future new flight planning links will initially appear in red (for a limited time) bringing the users' attention to the change(s). Some other changes coming down the pipe: -A complete revamp of the aviaiton jobs section - I solicited feedback on my project proposal to the units posting job announcements and received overwhelming support. The new interface will be completely interactive (like the monster.com interface) in a searchable database. -The message forum software has a new version currently in beta form, but to be released with plenty of new features... MTF... As always, comments, suggestions, gouge submissions, recommendations are always welcome! V/R BASEOPS
  16. Bottom Line: Moderators CANNOT bypass the "edited by" legend. There WILL be open disclosure when a user and/or Moderator edits anyone's post. The right to bypass the "edited by" legend has still been reserved to ADMINs (just Toro and I) -- although I can say I sparingly edit another person's post -- usually just for vulgarity (as in the case of M2).
  17. Regarding the moderator style in above post - I can tell you the "edited by" legend glitch had nothing to do with that... I just had a spare moment and did some poking around the permissions -- somewhere in the migrations/upgrading of software, etc. the permissions for many of the user groups got messed up. Several groups (including Super User, Supreme User, etc.) had the ability to negate the "edited by" legend. That has been removed. Enjoy.
  18. Actually, Article 88 of the UCMJ states (and I quote): "Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct." Often, people don't realize this extends beyond just the POTUS (as described above). I just recently had to remind the Navy SEAL that sits next to me that we similarly cannot (publicly) denigrate the wonderful members of our Congress...
  19. All, I have recently added two new Wiki sections to go along with the TDY Gouge Wiki. These Wiki pages use the same software as Wikipedia (MediaWiki engine) and are fully editable by any registered member of these forums. Please continue the spirit of these forums by adding to and upholding the accuracy of these wikis for all to benefit. If you have any ideas for future wiki topics, please comment on this blog and I will add those sections. New Wiki sections: FTU Wiki -- for details and information on the various FTU programs out there. Finance Wiki -- for details, information, FAQs, lessons learned about Mil Pay and Travel Pay. v/r Baseops

I deleted the last several - I think deleting may be an Admin-only function... Thanks for helping to clean up this place.
  22. Whaddaya mean "get your butt back in shape"? I thought all Marines run 5 miles before breakfast everyday! Good luck in Phase III!
  23. Congrats man! It's been a long road since the KC-130, eh? Now, the real question is what are you shooting for in your drop?
  24. Caveat - my information may be dated (XL 97-08). You basically have three strikes (or what many call three "triggers"). You burn one of your Triggers when: 1. You hook three daily sorties in a row 2. You hook a checkride After your 1st Trigger, you go to an 88 ride (progress check with your FLT/CC etc.) Pass it and continue. After your 2nd Trigger, you go to an 89 ride (with Sq leadership). Pass it and continue. After your 2nd Trigger, every checkride thereafter you fly is considered a 90 sortie (translation - elimination sortie). Fail any checkride here on out and you are off to visit with the Wing Commander.
  25. I have seen a disturbing trend recently. Less and less UPT Journals (a.k.a. blogs) are making it to the "blogosphere" - and the few that are out there are being rapidly purged from the internet. Kind of smells like Mao's Cultural Revolution... Then the www.baseops.net site started receiving emails asking for links to certain UPT blogs be removed. The requests were coming from the authors of those blogs and they were citing negative feedback (and even strong intimidation) from their UPT Squadron leadership as the main reason for removal. I just received another request to de-link a UPT blog tonight - that individual stated that during a UPT "INFOCON" briefing, the topic of their blog came up and that person faced intense scrutiny and negative feedback. Additionally, that individual's Commander threatened him/her with counseling and remedial punishment unless the blog was not publicly published. I guess a Skipper can order you to do just about anything - but I am curious as to what damage a kid can do by publishing a blog about what he did during UPT. What laws/regulations/AFI/OI/ is n violation here? Clearly there will be no classified (or sensitive) data being transmitted. Sounds like a control issue with the AF and somehow AETC would like to own every aspect of its students lives... By the way (for you naysayers out there), it is the US State Department, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls that controls the issue of exporting technical data (not the USAF). These blogs are in compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) and Export Arms Regulations (EAR) in accordance with "public domain" definitions in 22 CFR 120.11. Bottom Line: this is censorship at its best. Anyone have thoughts on this issue?
