  1. There's a commanders think tank? Man, I must have gone astray in my career...I was never even approached about a think tank.
  2. Hard to say. In the midst of a rated retention crisis, this year's major and Lt Col promotion boards selected rated officers at a lower rate than MSG officers. The overall number of MSG officers and rated officers competing for Lt Col were about equal. I know a rated officer who was passed over for Lt Col with a DP on his PRF. Bottom line: despite the shortage, the promotion boards don't seem to be looking at your primary AFSC when making decisions.
  3. They were until all the majors hit the end of their ADSC and bailed for the airlines. Meanwhile, the promotion rate for rated officers continues to lag the MSG.
  4. Turns out, we're a minority of the military. I can't really blame MOAA and AFA for not spending their political capital on this specific issue, though. They're probably burning a lot more calories battling against Sen McCain's attempts to take away BAH from married military couples.
  5. This goes back to the Air Force showing us what it really values, while continuing to tell us that they are trying to fix the problem.
  6. There's always a list. But with three looks at school, you're going to bracket two WG/CCs. Just because you weren't on the first guy's lost doesn't mean you can't make the second guy's list.

  8. Could it be they delayed the boards due to the long timelines from notification to pin-on, but now O-4s are bailing out as fast as they can and USAF needs to replace them?
  9. Counter point, there's a reason fighters have the worst shortage of pilots despite having the largest bonus.
  10. RUMINT, but the last I heard from a guy who did the whole one-on-one phone consultation with AFPC after the last board was: 1. They're going to mask year groups going forward. Essentially, once you meet your IPZ board, you'll continue to be treated at IPZ until you get out. 2. One line PRFs, forcing the boards to actually look at your whole record. 3. Quarterly awards were apparently a discriminator on the last LtCol board. Plan accordingly if you want to stay.

  14. I was there. The T-50 demo was dammed impressive. I was amazed at the acceleration and climb capability, but the slow-speed handling was unreal.

  16. Don't neglect the medical. It's not free anymore, but it's incredibly cheap compared to most employer or individual plans.
  17. It's almost like when a commodity (pilots) are in short supply, you have to pay more to secure them...
  18. They have the capability to triple it, but so many people have said "it's not about the money" for so long we've removed any incentive for them to triple it. If it's not about the money and the bonus doesn't work, why spend more on a program that is failing?

  20. I'd be taking a pretty good hit, and I'm considered an "earner" compared to many attached flyers.
  21. Well, they won't have very many 12X with a bonus commitment.

  23. We pay doctors and dentists much more than their capt/maj brethren. So there is precedent for people with extraordinary skills in high demand on the outside.
