Embassy Flights C-12
They recently (about 3 months ago) sent out an email looking for volunteers for these jobs. They were looking for Senior Captains/Majors to fly in Columbia, Pakistan, the Phillipines and somewhere in Africa (Ghana, maybe?) The tours are from between 18 -36 monhts. There were also several non-flying jobs that were technically under the same position to good deal places like Saudi Arabia and a few others. I'm not sure if you volunteer for these if you have a chance to indicate whether you are a volunteer for flying ones and not a volunteer for the non-flying ones.

Qatar wins 2022 world cup bid
Air conditioned outdoor stadiums?! If they have that kind of technology, they need to install air conditioned outdoor flightlines.

Qatar wins 2022 world cup bid
Wait, they're going to have the World Cup in a combat zone? Weird.

Leather Flight Jacket
Does anybody know of a better way to get your jacket to Pop's other than paying the $120 for round trip shipping? I've tried to get my buds to drop it off as they passed through Incirlik a couple of times, and they always seem to get there after hours and are not on the ground there long enough to make the trip.

It was only a matter of time
So that's where baby UAVs come from...

PerDiemCALC
If you could program an app that would run the C-130J brake energy/brake cooling time charts (or any of the TOLD that the CNI-MU does not do for me), that would be great. Also, if you could get AMC to approve a WX app, that would be sweet to. That way I wouldn't have to call PMSV to get them to verify the info that I already got from my iPhone in order to be legal.

Safety School (Albuquerque, AMIC)
FWIW, I thought the skiing at Sandia Peak back in March was pretty damn good...the even ended up staying open three weeks later than expected because the snow was so good. It's about 30 min from ABQ.

Customs and courtesies
I always thought walking out of the base theater after a mass briefing was an unofficial no salute zone. It's just a mob of various ranks walking in thirty different directions. If everybody was saluting everyone they were supposed to, you'd just keep your salute up with your head on a swivel all the way to your car. Ridiculous. Thank God they changed that. I don't understand why every time there is a change of command at the top at these giant joint bases that the new guy feels he needs to set the tone by upping the queep. Best change I've seen after a change of command was at Ali Al Salem when the new WG/CC came in ('07, I think) and GOT RID OF REFLECTIVE BELTS everywhere but the flight line. And no one got hit by a car in the chow hall the whole time!

C-17 Down on Elmendorf
A couple of points on this: 1) I don't think it is the local Chief of Safety's call whether or not to release it. If the JA guys at the Safety Center deem it applicable, it is their call to release it to Offutt's flight safety office. 2) This guy sounds like he will make a great WG/CC at the Deid sometime very soon.

Practical Jokes / Pranks
On a really long TDY with a brand new copilot, my engineer dumped an entire liter of water into the air conditioning vent (gasper) in front of the CP. After starting #3, the eng upsped it and then cranked the AC on full blast. The CP proceeded to get doused with the entire liter of water. I mutter something about seeing the "CP's water separator" being written up in the forms and try to start the rest of the engines without laughing. After managing to pull off this trick for about 4 days in a row, with less and less success at hiding our laughter each time, the CP gets in his seat, closes his gasper, and says "Ha, I'm not getting sprayed this time." After starting #3 and #4, keeping them downsped and turning on the AC at the bare minimum, the eng says "Hey co, can you open your gasper and point it toward me, I'm pretty hot back here." To our shock, the CP does as he is asked, at which point the eng upspeeds the engines that are running and places the AC at full blast, once again dousing the CP. I tell the CP he is officially the dumbest guy I have ever seen. The CP pouts the rest of the trip and refuses to hang out with us. Good times!

C130J (Herc) info
I wouldn' t expect Dyess to deploy their Js for another year or so (if they're smart they will hold off as long as possible) but I know some of their younger guys are deploying with the Little Rock bubbas. I'm not sure if this was a volunteer thing in order to get some time under their belts, or if they were tasked to go. Either way its not a bad way for a new FP to go get some experience and flying time.

C-17 Down on Elmendorf
Your safety guys should be able to request access from the Safety Center to the Powerpoint briefing that was given to the PACAF/CC as well as the video. I just watched the cockpit animation along with the HD video that was taken from the tower. It's very disturbing (very reminiscent of the Fairchild B-52 crash), but a lot can be learned from this mishap.

Accident/Safety Investigation Board (AIB/SIB)
Here's your standard SIB vs. AIB training that you get at least once a year as part of your required privilege training as a flyer (and probably closer to quarterly) and every time a mishap is discussed on baseops.net. The results of the Safety Investigation Board are privileged information that is restricted to USAF personnel with a need to know (mostly flyers and MX). A SIB is conducted by mostly flyers and MX personnel. The results of the AIB are public record and anyone can read them. An AIB is usually conducted by one or two flyers/MX folks along with a JAG representative. Log it.

Leadership at the 'Deid
You're taking that way too literal, bro. I'm pretty sure they mean if you are wearing PT gear you will be held to the same shaving standards as if you were in a flightsuit, etc. Still pretty gay, though. I always enjoyed not shaving on my one day off and flaunting a little scruffiness in an official AF uniform.

Leadership at the 'Deid
I'm not sure if the leadership at Manas is the same as it was last summer, but whoever was the WG/CC out there last summer rocked. After multiple trips there thinking we were being sneaky taking 20x our authorized take out from the chow hall to take back to Kandahar, one of the chow hall airmen advised me that the WG/CC had personally told them to allow all the guys from Kandahar to take all they wanted because he knew our food situation was terrible and Manas had way better stuff than what we had. It's little stuff like that that most of the leadership doesn't get that makes a huge difference in morale for the guys out there getting the job done.

Home Brewing Beer
I brew my own beer. I've done about 4 batches in the past year and a half. I would have made more, but I was deployed for 4 months (bottled a batch right before I left and it was delicious when I got back!) and I have a 2-year-old and one on they way. They tend to take away from by beer brewing time (as well as time for my 69 other hobbies.) You should have plenty of time on the weekends to keep it going.

Leadership at the 'Deid
What? Of course it's the host nation and not our (the U.S.'s) decision. Don't you know that Allah has forbidden all Muslims and Americans from drinking alcohol? That's why the Canadians and the rest of NATO can have alcohol in Afghanistan, but we can't.

I Hate Reflective Belts
I wonder how those guys convinced my dad to put on his best flannel shirt and be their reflective belt model. Nice work dad.

Radio etiquette
It does, but that only works if you actually listen to the computers...coincidentally, almost every retractable gear plane ever made tells you when the gear's not down. It's called not being able to slow to approach speed with the throttles at flight idle. But once again, you have to be paying attention to plane to notice this.

USAF C-130J Harvest Hawk
2...I guess they could put extra ACAWS Caution and Warning lights in reach of the jumpseat so the engineer could silence them when they go off. Besides that, I'm not sure what use you would have for an Eng.
