  1. I left McGuire (KC-10s) about 6 months ago, but I knew of a few single guys living in Philly. If you are willing to deal with the traffic/tolls ($3 to leave NJ), then it's a great place to live. If you decide on not living there, as long as you live in a city that starts with "M" you should be ok. Granted some of those cities are better than others. I would recommend Mt. Laurel if you decide on NJ. A lot of pilots live in that area, both married and single. Most people rent (mainly the younger guys) but not all. A 2 bed 2 bath condo is going to run you close to $300K, ridiculous I know. The market, at least when I left, was taking a bit of a beeting as well, but that could of changed since then. NJ sucks, but there is a lot around there to go and do (NYC, Philly, DC, ect...). Plan on being gone A LOT!! The deployment schedule was pretty rough, and from what I hear is still the same. You will be busy that is for sure. Enjoy it though, the KC-10 is an awesome airplane!! If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
  2. I had to ship my dog, 50lb lab, and used Northwest Airlines. I had no complaints and would use the same company again if I had too. You drop off and pickup the pet at their cargo facilities. They let me into cargo area and stay with my dog until they loaded her on the truck to take her to the plane. There was a 5 hour layover in Detroit. They told me, so I assume they arent lying to me, that they put the cage in their facility there, and leave them be unless you want them fed and watered. My parents met her on the other end and said she was just fine and in good spirits.
  3. Oh how I remember that email!! Thank you leadership, just when we though morale couldnt get any worse, you are there to show us how wrong we are!!
  4. This is no joke unfortunately, and it's not just aimed at the C-17s... I got this email a few days ago as well. It is a base wide thing that the OG/CC sent out. Ridiculous if you ask me. Looks like I will be forced to wear a scarf to work come Monday morning (hint hint on the affected group). Good to see our priorities are in the right place... Wait...so do I HAVE to start wearing my red shirt of Friday's now so that I match??
  5. Knock out the written exams. They are easy. Just memorize the answers and take the test. Its nothing cosmic. If that's all it's going to take to get your CFI, I say go for it. It's a heck of a lot easier than doing it the civilian way. Ellsworb, I feel your pain. The 6+ hour ground eval with no break...thank you Indy FSDO!! EDIT: 40 hours to add on a single-engine rating?? That's complete Bullsh!it!! I got my single add-on, and it took all of 3 hours, which conveniently enough is the minimum time required to get a sign-off to take the checkride.
  6. Like Hacker, I use an Excel file that I built that copies a normal logbook and keep it on my thumbdrive. This way you can design it to your specifications.
  7. Boeing didnt take long here at McGuire. I think it was maybe just a month and a half or so before our checkride (mid-sept thru end of Nov). Then 2-2 1/2 months is about the average depending on number of studs in FTU at the time. Mine took just under 2 months, whereas others took a little more. As far as mission qual'd goes, same thing...just depends. You have 90 days, but as with everything, if the trips dont drop it may take longer. If there are a lot of trips dropping it may not take long at all. But I agree with Jay an average is 5-6 months to be fully mission ready. Mine took about 4 1/2 to finish FTU and once I started flying with the squadron, after a short no flying and ASBC stint, another 20 days or so to be fully mission qual'd. [ 16. 8. The school house is at both bases. You start at Boeing (soon to be Flight Safety), where you do all your systems computer training and sim training. Once finished with that, you then go to the FTU (another squadron on base) and start flying. After finishing FTU you return to your squadron. It's all in house, though once in awhile you may have to do the sim portion at the other base. I dont know how often this happens. Dont know anyone who did that, but there was one from Travis at McGuire going through Boeing at the time I was. Any other questions about training or anything -10 related PM me.
  9. I wore desert throughout UPT.
  10. Chuck is right, you get more fuel flow through the boom than you do the hose. Other than that, I have no idea why there is a difference...then again, I am pretty drunk right now!!
  11. I cant remember the years but they were Pipers. They were old though. Our engineers take not of our t/o and land times and put that down on the paperwork. They then can figure the hours and minutes to determine flight time. But as Bergman said, its t/o to land time plus 5 minutes. [ 10. July 2006, 18:33: Message edited by: Sneedro ]
  12. Rtstolwo, not true in all airplanes. I have flown a couple that the meter runs with just the master sw on.
  13. Anyone know if Yokota has wireless internet on base?? I will be there for a few days and am trying to decide whether or not to take my computer. Thanks [ 06. June 2006, 20:46: Message edited by: Toro ]
  14. Yes, we do a/p off tanker work whenever our receivers so ask. I think Ace was being sarcastic Bergman.
  15. Nice boom!! Yes Hydro, I know you are just fooling. Just giving some back!!
  16. You may think its gay, but I am not sweating my nuts off in flight!!
  17. The KC-10 has a GREAT a/c on board!! It keeps the jet a perfect temperature all the time. Granted I have not been to the desert with it so my experience with the a/c is very limited.
  18. Never knew the guy, but I havent heard much good about him... I guess I should just go sit in my copilot corner and be happy I am under the new SQ/CC. [ 07. March 2006, 20:05: Message edited by: ClearedHot ]
  19. I can see it now, "Hey, we didnt...gulp gulp...order these...gulp gulp...pitchers of beer...gulp gulp!!"
  20. All this talk of not drinking beer makes me sad...I need a beer
  21. I've found out that some other customer has paid for lunch/dinner before at the end of a meal a couple of times. Seems almost constant that when I am out and around in uniform, especially away from base, that people want to come up and shake my hand and thank me for my service. That's about all I have seen in my sort time on AD so far.
  22. Want a mindset?? Go in there with an open mind. Help out your classmates and have a good attitude towards everything you are doing. If you are willing to put in the effort and learn, the IP's will help you. Dont go in there saying I am going to fly the KC-10 (because EVERYONE wants to fly that sexy b!tch :D ) of maybe the F-22 I guess  . That wont go over well and life could suck for you. I wouldnt worry about the washout rate. 1 guy washed out of our class. 1 guy washed back to the next class, and another guy almost made it back to the flight we started in he washed back so many times. So whats that tell you?? Well besically that if you want to be there, put in the effort, and give it your all you will make it through. Good Luck to you [ 27. As long as he can hear you, just use light gun signals!! Yeah...no one is going to hear anything in the Tweet. So much for that idea. Good luck either way.
