  1. I'm sure it differs slightly from jet to jet. In the F-15E, depressing the rudder pedals without engaging the nosewheel steering will give you up to 30 degrees of turn - this is generally enough on wide turns. Depressing the nosewheel steering button extends that to 45 degrees, which will give the jet a pretty tight turn. Using differential braking is allowed, using it generally varies on pilot and situation. I generally only use it if I need to slow down while turn, not for the actual turn.

  2. As a cadet, can I use the MPF to get a passport? If not as a cadet, I commission on in a couple weeks but don't EAD until November, can I use MPF before EAD?

Assuming you're talking about a personal passport, you should be able to, but there's not really a need to. You can get the application online and then take it to the post office to submit it. The only reason you would need to go to MPF would be to get an official passport (which I doubt you need as a cadet).

  3. Or, better yet...do you really need both a civilian & a government/no-fee passport? I'vd heard from people who say you HAVE to have one, and I've met folks who just returned from a long OCONUS tour and never had the government one to begin with....

Agree with all previous. Whether you HAVE to have one depends on where you go. When I went to the Heath, I was told by Seymour Johnson MPF that we had to have an official passport - both myself and my wife got one through MPF, along with a personal passport (also through MPF, but we paid out of pocket). Other than the PCS flight, my wife never used her official passport. My official passport went into my deployment folder and stayed there for three years. Some guys in the squadron did not have an official passport when they arrived.

  4. You ARE still a dumbass...If you do not recognize that you are currently a dumbass, you will never stop being one...And you are not in charge, so never think that you are...Right now, you fck up a lot...Eventually, you will be smarter and more experienced and fck up less...If you take it personally or need a hug after a debrief, go join a sorority.

If I didn't know him personally, I would think that T-Bone was Rainman with a new login name.

    Harumph.

  5. Are the cabins of fighter aircraft constantly pressurized and depressurized during flight? If you're doing maneuvers between 5,000 and 15,000 feet, would the cockpit stay pressurized for 10,000 feet?

I can't answer the allergy waiver question, but I can tell you that fighter aircraft are pressurized. In T-38s and F-15s it's outside pressure up to 8000MSL, then it maintains 8000MSL cabin pressure to 23K, then it increases in a percentage of your outside pressure above 230.

  6. One thing to consider - go to a trophy/engraving shop and maybe have something engraved on the silver dollar/coin? It's cheap and it'll have even more significance, make it kind of like the Airman's Coin - given at BMT graduation - it says "Presented on the occasion of becoming and Airman."

I think that is an outstanding idea.

As a sidebar for fighter dudes: I think the "Standard Bomb Bet" needs to be updated as well...Bottom line is that I don't think the accuracy of system-delivered BDU-33s correlates well with aviating ability or trains crews well for combat success thus making the bet a side game and not much more. A new bomb bet should still punish buffonery and reward success but take the "bent fin" factor out.

Putting money down on system deliveries is gay. We all still do visual deliveries, put your money down there.

    For all BDU-33 deliveries: $1 a foul/gross error, $1 a shack...nothing else.

Your scoring system is flawed - who takes the money when two guys foul but nobody shacks? At any rate, it's not about the money, it's about the principle of enjoying the competition. Consider the handful of quarters your tiny silver medals (but nobody says you can't brief a non-standard bomb-bet). If it ain't broke....

  7. Hey, I'm a cross-towner about 30 minutes away of 0500 w/o traffic and about 1 hr 15 min away if you catch traffic. I'm finishing up my 300 yr, and I haven't had a problem with it affecting my ranking.

That's not what he's asking. He's not asking if being cross town would hurt his ranking, he's asking if it would benefit. My response would be no. While it does show motivation, I don't think your ranking would be increased just because you had to travel a far distance. However, it it came up to a tie-breaker of rating the guy who attended ROTC at his own school and the guy who travelled an hour, I would give the higher ranking to the guy who put for the effort to make the commute.

I went cross town for ROTC - though only about a 20 minute drive. There was a guy who travelled an hour, and as far as I could tell he didn't get any sort of favoritism.

    GCL

In terms of your original question, your OM would obviously be better if your difference in ranking was different as you stated between the two Dets...

I am concerned about how my commander's ranking would affect my overall OM, since I have less people to compete with. For example, if i ranked 5/10 cadets I would be worse off then if i ranked 40/100 cadets.

The problem here is that you're assuming that when you go from a smaller school to a larger school, your relative OM will be higher amongst those people simply because there are more of them. That's a pretty big assumption to make...unless maybe you transfer to University of Alabama.

  8. Can they amend my orders after I've already PCS'ed? If so, that'd pretty much fix everything.

I'm sure it won't be easy (nothing with MPF ever is), but they should be able to do it...especially if they screwed it up to begin with. They're not re-doing your orders, they are simply doing up an additional form that says your original orders need to be altered. It's a Form 973 - the part you're concerned with is section 5 ("Item XXX as reads...is amended to read...")

Print that form and take it to MPF with your original orders and supporting documentation (from TMO and whatever else you have). As always, MPF will probably stonewall you less if you act like you've researched the problem and know what you're talking about.

  9. So let's say I PCS, but for reasons beyond my control (medical emergency) I have to PCS again to a different training location after two months. My unit is saying that I only rate one PCS and may owe money back. What about DLA?

Go back to this post on page 5. Short answer, it's doable, but your DLA may be at a reduced rate.

Finance put the wrong constructed cost on my travel voucher during my PCS this month... I have documentation from TMO that shows the proper amount, but on my orders the incorrect amount is shown. Finance is saying they will not reimburse the correct amount, only the amount on my orders. I'm sure if I had been overpaid, they would have no problem making the correction. Anybody have any insight on how I can convince them to do their job, or have a good JFTR section I can highlight and bring in to them?

What do you mean by constructed cost? If your orders are jacked up, go back to MPF, explain the situation, and have them amend your orders.

  10. This wouldn't be done by a flight doc, it would like be done off-base (unless you're at a base with a full up hospital like Wilford Hall) and would fall under TRICARE coverage. I don't know the answer for sure, but I poked around the site and the only thing even remotely close I could find was about stomach stapling. The short answer for that was that it would be covered if it was done for health reasons. If you don't get a definite answer here, recommend you call the TRICARE office on base and ask them.

  11. Can you be considered for a FAIP slot if you have X-amount of years already in?

As sky king said, it's not time in service, it's rank - so a Capt (or 1Lt close to pinning on Capt) will not be FAIP'd, but a new O-2E could be (they started that in about 1997). I believe you said somewhere that your husband is prior E, so he could potentially be FAIP if he is not close to pinning on Captain.

Proficiency advancing is an option but there is no way they will do it

That's lame - especially if you're going to a T-1/T-38. You just finished UPT, I would hope they would consider you proficient in flying the jet and you should definitely be proficient on the general knowledge and systems knowledge. They proficiency advanced me through all but a couple of my initial rides prior to my first Form 8, and they prof advanced me through a couple of the instructor rides.

  12. What entitlements dos a retired 4-Star have in flying a military jet?

While he was CINC USAFE, said assbag demanded that he get a front seat Strike Eagle ride. He bypassed all the rules and regulations that encompass a SOC course and ended up flying in the front seat.

    Un-f***-ing believable.

  13. Ditto everything from Kayla and egochecks with a couple notes -

Make sure that you have the okay from the housing folks and talk it over with your det before you have the movers pick up your stuff (which you schedule through TMO if you didn't already know) and you schedule a day for them to drop it off.

I may be misreading this, but you don't set a date for your TMO shipment to be delivered until it has actually arrived. They will give you an estimated shipping time and TMO will contact you when it has arrived. It's no problem if you have it shipped to your UPT base prior to ASBC and it sits there for weeks until you arrive.

Also, if you come (sts) to Sheppard before you go to ASBC just know that you're kind of doing it bass ackwards from what they expect, ie when it's time for them to issue you a plane ticket to get to Maxwell they plan on doing it from wherever you live now, not from Sheppard. If you do the "go to Sheppard route first" don't buy your own ticket. Have the travel office here at Sheppard buy it for you.

While going to Sheppard first may be easier in terms of getting your wife settled and getting a house, you need to make sure it is documented as such on your orders. The original poster (hawg030) had TDY enroute on his orders (home of record to IFS, then UPT). If this is the case, TMO will not get you a ticket to Sheppard, then Maxwell, then back to Sheppard (this would be a PCS followed by TDY).

  14. If I were legally married, as In my fiance and I went and got the papers done prior to the service while we are still in college, would it help things go a bit more smoothly as far as finance, BAH ect.... my first assignment is IFS (pueblo Colorado) (TDY-En-Route)

In your case, it won't matter whether you get married before or after your commissioning (unless you somehow get your det to put you into DEERS). Your information - DEERS and TDY - will not be input until you are at your PCS base (I'm assuming Pueblo doesn't have an MPF). At that time, MPF will input your information and finance will back-pay you appropriately. If you are not accomplishing official duties prior to IFS (therefore making you on 'active duty'), it doesn't matter whether you get married one month or one day before IFS - your paycheck starts when you get to IFS.

My fiance of course can not come, so will I recieve BAH for her to live at home?

Yes, assuming you are married before the TDY.

While I recieve lodging at IFS?

    11 pages of IFS information

However I am concerned because, the way my DET cadre make it sound, at IFS, I will inprocess there into the air force.

Again, I wouldn't think they have a DEERS at IFS, but it doesn't matter whether you inprocess there or your UPT base. Just bring your wedding certificate and they'll input the info into DEERS. If you are married when you start active duty, then you will be (back) paid appropriately.

from what I hear, inprocessing can take a week or two just to get all the details hammered out.

No way. If you're talking about inprocessing to the Air Force (DEERS) - that shouldn't take more than a couple hours; it's just a bunch of paperwork to be filled out. If you're talking about inprocessing to a specific base, that shouldn't take more than a couple days.

And I dont think IFS is the place to be worried about finance and if my Fiance has enough money to have a roof over her head.. Suggestions?

Normally you can get an advance payment prior to a PCS. You basically get a lump sum payment which you can repay over the course of the next 12 months. Since you don't currently have a finance office, I don't know for sure how you would do that, but there has to be a way. If nobody here has an answer (try to PM 'Finance Guy'), I would recommend calling to the finance office at your UPT base.

  15. That article is inaccurate as hell!!

    Becauuuuuuusee....????

Well, you can tell a flyer didn't write that article...

Again....becauuuuuuusee....???? Aside from calling it a "landing traffic entry pattern", it seemed pretty straight forward.

  16. If it (or local regs) don't say you can't, then you can.

I would disagree here. My 0.02 - if the beer light in the bar ain't on, hold off. I had a bud who, not on the schedule to fly, had a beer at the O'Club during lunch a few years back. Apparently a shoe clerk saw a guy in a flight suit drinking during duty hours and called straight to the DO. Needless to say, said bag-wearer got a full-up ass chewing.

As lame as it sounds, I say don't pick up a beer unless you're in the squadron bar or in the O'Club. With all the BS that the media and shoe clerks seem to pick up on these days, they don't need extra fodder from somebody in uniform throwing back a harmless drink in uniform. They don't understand us...their views on are different. They see somebody in a flight suit drinking and it can be misperceived as something completely different.

  17. "Five years ago, when I was a co-pilot deployed to Saudia Arabia, female pilots or boom operators sometimes could not get controllers to acknowledge them on the radios. I would intentionally lower my voice for radio calls to prevent any problems. All-female crews were intentionally avoided to prevent problems with support for diverting aircraft."

F*** that. Saudi pilots still don't like taking orders from female controllers. If some douchebag can't handle a female telling him to call precontact, I say let the f***er flame out and see how much Allah will help him.

  18. I heard Cannon used to be a remote but they moved the gate a mile further out to get the base within X amount of miles of the nearest big city to avoid the remote title. Any truth to that?

I heard the exact same thing about Laughin, except it was that they built a new gate and made the original gate the "back gate". I believed it, seeing as how the static displays and guard shack (in 97, at least) look a lot like you would expect a front gate to look.

  19. The left hand drive on the right side of the road takes some getting used to, but so does driving on the right side of the road with a right hand drive. We took both our cars over there and never had any problem. I had a compact, my wife had an SUV - I only drove a right-hand drive once. Roads were never really a problem (again, takes some getting used to), but the parking can definitely be a pain the ass. I had a bud who brought over an Expedition and, other than some parking issues, never had any problems.

M2 has some good points on the MX. I had a engine part fail that would have cost me $2000 on the economy to fix. The AAFES auto shop (where we got our cars tuned up regularly) was fortunately able to order and fix it for significantly cheaper.

I had thought (which is dangerous) about taking the Yota, leaving the TJ here with family and getting something on the economy for to and from work.

We planned to only take one car and buy one when we get there, but were unable to sell the second. If you do take a second car over, it will be on your dime. It cost about a grand when we took ours over (2001) and when we brought it back (2004). It's also a mild ass pain to take the second car because you're only paying to get it to the port of entry (which for Lakenheath was about a 5 hour drive), whereas your first car will be delivered to Brandon (about 10 minutes north of Lakenheath). We ended up paying the contracted delivery guy extra to throw it on one of his trucks and bring it up.

Or am I just steering myself into staying CONUS, where I can keep the 4x4's, hunt, and eat BBQ?

    No way, go England!
