  1. Alright, against my will I apparently have been upgraded to IE 7.0. One of the 'perks' to this upgraded service is that it has a built in pop-up blocker which I cannot figure out how to disable. Anytime I try to click on something within this site that has a pop-up (post numbers, hyperlinks in the reply page), it pops up the "IE has disabled the pop-up blocker...bla bla...click here for options." From there I can select, "temporarily allow pop-ups" but I have to do it at every new page.

    Anybody know if there's a way to permanently disable this for specific sites?

    Yes, as long as you have a valid stateside license.

    No, they're going to use the pictures for your ID, so it needs to be a good quality (paper or digital). They need to be a specific size and quality, which you can probably find in the link M2 provided. You can get them at WalGreens, Mail Boxes etc., and tons of other places.

    If you want to save the 6-9 bucks for your passport photos, you should be able to get multimedia to take your photos. They will take them for your official and your family's mlitary passports, just ask them for an extra form (or extra photos) for your IDP. The passport office at MPF is the only place i know that will 'officially' fill out the multimedia request (some AF Form, I can't remember the number), so unless you're already there for something else (passport photos, for instance), it may be more trouble than it's worth.

    No, the only time you would have a true direct support is if you had a student pilot not crewed with a student WSO or vice versa. Then you'd have (as an example), IP with student WSO in his backseat and his wingman would be a CT crew. The only sortie that 'requires' direct support is ACM. For ACT, we generally put a 2-ship of students against another 2-ship of students and they take turns on blue hacks.

    - How many student "team" sorties are there in the syllabus where student pilots and WSOs are paired together to fly?

    Quite a lot. I'd have to look at the syllabus to be sure, but off the top of my nugget I recall one transition, five BFM (out of a total eight), zero ACM, zero ACT, three surface attack (one of which is TST), one SAT, and I believe two night (one of which is TST). They call it 'crew solo'.

    - Are there opportunities to sandbag sorties at the FTU in the event that there are direct support sorties?

    Negative. "Unfair advantage..bla...bla". If you're casual status you might get a chance, but not students.

    - What's the ASD in the Strike Eagle? Is the intent of each sortie to try and maximize training by carrying full bags of gas and full internals (exception: maybe not on BFM/ACM training sorties; no externals due to likely combat jet in the event of an A/A engagement?)?

    For the most part, we don't concern ourselves with ASD. Towards the end of the FY, we may try to extend or shorten sorties a little, but the training is more important. We will generally load up the jets with bags towards the end of A/A (ACT to allow AB commits) and into surface attack to fly longer A/G sorties. We don't load up bags during the BFM/ACM phase because we can't fight until they're dry.

  5. All his car "stuff" is CA, my car is CO, and my drivers license is MS.

    Do we need to change my car to CA plates to make it legal so that we don't have to change our plates when we move from base to base? Or are we okay keeping them CO? (I'm not sure on CA and CO's policies on renewing plates online. My parents live in CO so it's not a problem to have mail sent to them. His parent's live in CA so the same goes for them.)

    And should I change my license to CA? I really don't know if that's possible though, due to residency requirements.

    In some states, you may need to change something. I can't remember if it was MS or NC, but your registration, license plates, and drivers license could not be from three different states. In other words, if you have a MS license you have to change either your plates or registration to MS. Realize that once you have this set, you won't have to change anything as you move - the license and registration can be renewed via mail or e-mail.

    You beat me to the punch. I had already PM'd Steve and told him to use the Lakenheath or Mildenhall APO for shipping to any stateside or APO address. Not only will it be significantly cheaper than sending via the British post, but the fact that USPS will allow you to ship it as media mail should further decrease the price to only a couple bucks. I shouldn't need to be said, but I can personally vouch for Steve and would sponsor him onto base myself if I was there (he's been on base many times as it is). Please PM him if you're willing to help him and everybody else out who ordered a book.

  8. You really don't need an international driving permit (it's not a license, and there is a difference which I will get to in a second), but it is nice to have if you get pulled over and the police officer doesn't speak/read English.

    I don't know if there's a difference between being on leave and being stationed there, but everybody I've spoken to and everything I've seen about Germany says that if you drive outside of Germany, you must have an IDP. Regardless, as M2 mentioned, do NOT get them through anybody other AAA and AATA. About 99.69% of those "40,100,000 Google hits" are actually frauds - totally worthless and no certification.

  9. A question on overseas auto insurance. Has anyone been able to save more using USAA overseas, or do they even cover the UK, Germany, or Japan?

    I would imagine they insure everywhere, but I know for a fact that they insure in the UK and Germany (used them for both). If you have USAA, I would use them. Your US providers are limited (I think Geico was the only other that provided coverage in the UK), but I would stick with a US company.

    Haven't done it, but I've done the car to Europe thing twice now. Ditto Nole96 that if you were authorized to ship one over, you should be authorized to ship one back (regardless of whether you actually shipped one). If anybody else there has a car they shipped over, you should be good to go. But to clarify Nole's statement, it doesn't need to be an American car, only have American specs (a lot of military folks shipped backed BMWs, Mercedes, Volvos, and the such straight from the factory that were built to American specs).

  11. I'm not too sure how to respond *shrugs shoulders*. I don't know all the facts or the nitty gritty as to why he got FAIPed, I just wanted to know what I could do, as a friend, to help the wife more-so then the husband :-( and if anyone had any advice, if they were in a similar situation...

    I'll try to put it a little more tactfully. What are her perceptions of a FAIP? How does she know what it entails? Who gave her that info? Is she sad for herself, or is she sad for her husband? If she was 'crying' at assignment night, then my guess is that she has been talking to some idiot who talked a bunch of shit about FAIPs. It doesn't matter why he got FAIPed - it's not a scarlet letter - the guy is going to spend the next three years of his life teaching dudes to fly. Ten years from now, he will be able to go to just about any AF base in the US and know somebody who he wrote a gradesheet for.

    Back to your question on how to console her. Have her read back through this thread. Have her talk to FAIPs or wives of FAIPs. Ask her why in the world she was crying. Ask her if she realizes how lucky she is that her husband will be not be deployed for the next three years other than the occasional weekend cross country. Tell her how lucky she is that her husband can knock out his masters and SOS in correspondence to further his Air Force career.

    I don't know anything about this woman. but the whole thing reeks of a wife who is carrying a self-imposed burden based off things she has heard, with no first hand knowledge of the facts. And I'm sorry, but wives like that are idiots.

    Leave him alone. He is about to receive an aviation rating...if he's going to have a period because he has to spend his first three years paying it forward....screw him.

    Tell them that FAIPs can go to weapons school, FAIPs can go to TPS, and FAIPs can be Wing Commanders. It's three f***ing years. Tell him to stop being a pissy little bitch and get over it.

    Wow...you're right. All the seasoned pilots who have responded -- we must not know. You obviously have the upper hand on all of us, what with you being in the LPA and all. As one of those people who responded, what are the odds that I know 'the rules'.

    The rules are unwritten for a reason - because your are supposed to know them. Are the rules written in the bar? Yes. Are you supposed to read those rules? No - hence the ridicule.

    If your squadron doesn't have them 'posted', then goes ask the dudes in your squadron. If your squadron is worth a shit, they have the rules scribbled down somewhere and scotch-taped to to a cabinet next to the booze. The last sentence in that list is the rule that 'You're not allowed to read the rules out loud."

    If your squadron doesn't have them posted then...well...honestly....they suck.

    But don't call us out for not 'knowing' when we ridicule you for something your squadron should have taught you the first day you stepped in the door.
