  1. Question for finance guy or anybody who has been in this situation -

    I currently receive tax-free through September and receive ACP (bonus). IRA is maxed out, so I've elected to max out TSP to the tax-free $46K limit. Here are a few questions -

    - Should I receive the ACP tax-free in it's entirety? The ACP payment date is within my one-year tax-free status. If I elect to contribute 100% of my bonus to TSP, will it go in tax-free in its entirety?

    - For calculating the remainder of the TSP deposits, would it be beneficial to put in less basic pay now (tax-free) and dramatically raise the amount (75-80%) once I'm out of the tax free zone? I know it will be subject to tax upon withdrawal (tax deferred), but my rationale is to put in more of my taxable income in an attempt to put myself in a lower overall tax bracket come tax time.

    - Any disadvantages to maxing out the full 46K? Again, I have already accomplished spar's steps 1-4 (step 3 first, of course).

    I've tried searching the TSP and DFAS websites, as well as e-mailing DFAS, but they are completely useless for getting an answer.

  2. At what point are some forced to give up there call sign for a more politically correct one. I know for a fact Lt General Loyd “Chip” Utterback was Tits when he was at Kunsan. Not sure if TITS would have gone over real well as the 13 AF/CC. Then of course you have Neda Bickerstaff, Kenny Lingus, and so on.

    These days I've heard of it as low as the Sq/CC level. My previous DO - callsign "Rudeboy" was told he would have to be replotted to be considered for Sq/CC. Everybody thought it was ridiculous, especially since it's a pretty tame call sign compared to some. Fortunately this didn't hold and he is now a Sq/CC.

    1. Saying container and cranium and pointing with your elbows is retarded. Maybe a few light gray squadrons still do that, but I think those traditions live on mostly in AETC for entertainment. In the rest of the CAF, that stuff is dying out along with the O'Club...

    4. Fighter squadrons naming their casual LTs...wtf? Hopefully it was something very informal and very degrading. Roll calls and naming ceremonies should be reserved only for winged persons. Exception: UPT classes.

    Disagree again. We've named every casual dude we've had - they may not have wings, but those guys were every bit a part of the squadron as us. They busted their asses at work, sometimes put in as many hours as us, went TDY with us (and were almost always tagged as DD), drank in the bar and partied in town with us, and even flew back seat rides with us.

  3. As a non-rated guy how early can you reasonably take leave?

    In theory, you could take leave the day after you report it, it would just have to be approved be your commander (and obviously you'd be into negative leave, which also must be approved - as stract mentioned). Barring unusual circumstances, I don't think your commander would have a problem with you taking leave for a few days to go to a wedding.

    Stract is correct on taking leave and negative leave.

    Also if I take those 10 days of permissive leave to find a house when I report to Peterson will that play into it at all?

    It's not permissive leave, it's permissive TDY. 36-3003 (Table 7, Rule 2) details this - you can get up to 8 days after you sign in, and it ends once you find a house. Thing is, your commander shouldn't have a problem with you just taking a few days off work to find yourself a place. In five PCSs I have never had to use PTDY to go house hunting.

  4. I read having a body type (long necks) where there is more distance from your brain to your heart doesn't help... and being tall, skinny, and having low blood pressure. Short stocky guys handle it a little better.

    That's what the aerospace physiology guys will tell you, which I'm sure is true. Of all the guys I've known who fly fighters, none with a particular body type has been better than others at pulling Gs.

    Course, I fly a mudhen, so what do I know about Gs?

    As for the scar, as long as it doesn't affect your vision, it wouldn't think it would be a factor. I have a scar on my left cornea that is clearly visible if you look close enough. I don't know exactly how it happened other than I noticed it near the end of a deployment to the desert. The only answer the doc had was that it possibly resulted from irritation due to sand getting into my eye. There was some medical term for it, but I don't remember what it was. At any rate, it hasn't affected my vision at all, so the doc told me not to worry about it.

  6. In your case, just sign up and cancel ASAP after the reception. Also, just don't actually buy anything on the card, that way you won't forget to pay it off and then owe 20% interest or something insane like that.

    Concur.

    I got married while I was at Columbus and did the exact same thing. The 60 or so bucks I spent in the four months of being a club member easily offset the much greater expenses I would have incurred had I had my reception off base.

    Don't let this devolve into a thread on how much the club sucks. If you want to talk about that, take it here.

    Does anyone have any recommendations of good places to live? I've heard of this place Brookwood Downes, and it looks decent. Any thoughts on it or other places I should be looking into? Thanks

    Maplewood, Raintree and Lanetree are all popular subdivision. With the exception of living downtown or right out the back gate (Goldsboro ghetto), most of the places around town are pretty nice. Currently I would say most people live towards the west side of town around the Lanetree area. There is another fairly new apartment complex to the north of town on either Warrick Circle/Caudill Ave.

    Try looking at AHRN.com. It's a military-only listing of places to rent and lease by town. It shows lots of places in Goldsboro - I just used it to rent our place.

  8. If I wanted to make this 3-day weekend into a 5-day weekend with taking the least amount of leave possible, would it be best to take leave on Tue and Wed?

    Are you trying to go somewhere or no kidding stay in the local area?

    If you are going somewhere, the only way to 'maximize' your leave is to start on Saturday. If you start your leave on a non-duty day, then that day is not counted against leave. Everything else is counted. So if you left on Saturday and came back on Wednesday, you'd be charged four days of leave.

    Leave starts and ends in the local area, so if you are staying in the local area, you can start your leave on Tuesday (since Monday is a holiday) and you will be charged two days of leave.

  10. Some of the best training you can do in a safe environment that will prepare you for the actual emergent environment. (Realizing when you're being retarded is very helpful.)

    No joke. Like the guy in the video, I volunteered for the hypoxia test when I did this in UPT. They had me drop my mask (I don't remember what the altitude was) and told me to hold my hands out, palms down. I was given commands to bank left and right with my hands, then recover back to level flight. Unlike the guy in the video, my symptoms didn't have a subtle onset. I was following commands and the next thing I knew, somebody was reattaching my mask and I started hearing two sets of voices simultaneously (both from the same tech); one was his bank commands - which were apparently from 15-20 seconds earlier, and the other was him telling me to gangload my regulator and recover - which was what he was saying real time. Even after I started getting oxygen back, I was so disoriented that I was trying to follow both sets of commands, banking with one hand and trying to gangload with the other (eventhough I knew I was already gangloaded)

    Pretty bizarre stuff. And oh yeah, it smelled terrible.

    Does 24+ consecutive months in the USMC UH-1N satisfy the AF requirements for an additional award of the Combat Readiness Medal?

    Yes. I may have misread - I thought he was asking if his prior to time could be added to his current time to total 24 months.

    Boofer - if you can prove (with flight records, should be easy) that you were CMR for 24 consecutive months, you should be able to get somebody to submit you for the medal.

    I've moved your question. If you're a mom, then much of this will probably be Greek to you (as it would be to my mom), but you can refer your son in law to the thread. To answer some questions that may be specific to his case -

    Given that there is only 2 days to report, we're assuming he won't be around to help his wife with the move from MA (to Little Rock).

    Depends on a couple things. Is he TDY enroute (I would assume) or TDY out and back? If he is TDY enroute, then two days for him to get from Alabama to Arkansas should be enough. All he has to do to 'report' is step in the door and say, "Hey, I'm here," then go tend to his personal matters. Also, when is he planning on moving his household goods? He can have them picked up as soon as he has orders - which I would recommend doing.

    Can his wife show up a week or two earlier to look for an apartment in Little Rock?Would she be reimbursed if she stayed in a hotel off base during that time or would she be able to stay in Base Lodging?

    She can show up whenever she wants (with orders) - but you are only 'allowed' a certain number of days in billeting for a PCS (I think 30). Past that, you are allowed to stay on a space available basis, but it sounds like a couple weeks should be plenty.

    Ditto Kayla on the reimbursement and shipping household goods.

  13. The AFI that dictates aircrew ratings allows time from other branches to count towards advanced ratings (Senior Pilot, Command Pilot), so normally this would count for the medal. The problem with your case is that the Combat Readiness Medal requires you to be combat ready for 24 consecutive months. From AFI 36-2803, "The individual must be subject to a continuous individual positional evaluation program; - Have completed 24 months of sustained combat or mission readiness with no more than a 120-calendar day break.

    So your problem is N/A.

    That's correct. That's why we're not supposed to let people set in the seats at airshows (this is waiverable if you're a hot chick).

    What Bogey referenced is called a 'Spouse Taxi' where they taxi out, get armed up, then fire up the engines and get to about 100 knots down the runway before the abort and taxi back.

    P.S. This is has been killing me since I joined - what does (sts) mean?

    I moved your post to this thread since there's a lot of similar situations as what you're asking including this post from the first page. My wife is not AF, but she is an RN, so I'll throw my two cents in.

    1) Is there anyway I could contact a family who is dual military? I would like a general idea of what life would be life.

    I know a few people who were married AF couples. Most of them were flyers, but I actually know one couple that was pilot and dental technician (somewhat similar to your situation). If you want to PM me with your personal e-mail address, I can contact them and see if they would be interested in providing you some answers.

    2) Assignments: I'm pretty positive that nothing is set in stone with the Military, but how likely is it that I could have a joint-assignment (I think that is what it's called) with my husband?

    A lot of similar questions and answers throughout this thread, but the general consensus is that the AF will try to make it happen but they will not guarantee anything (and the term is "Join Spouse").

    I would recommend against you joining the AF for several reasons.

    - A nursing degree will give you the opportunity to work in a very broad variety of jobs. While you do have a good chance of Join Spouse considerations in the medical field, I don’t think that commissioning is necessary to work as a nurse for the AF. There are plenty of nursing GS (civilian) jobs out there, and if there isn’t one available at the base that your husband goes to, then you always have the option of applying to the civilian hospital in town. My wife worked as GS nurse in Lakenheath, and now works for a civilian hospital.

    - As a civilian, you do your job on base and that’s it. If you are an officer, you are now eligible for all the perks that come with that role to include deployments and AEFs. Unless you are on an AEF cycle aligned with your husband, he could leave for four months and return two days after you’ve stepped out the door for your four month deployment (I work with a maintenance NCO who had that exact thing happen to him). If you do get assigned to the same AEF and have kids, you'll have to find somebody to watch them for four months (kids are not a trump card for deployments).

    - Even if you are able to work all of your assignments to the same base as your husband, you will rarely PCS with him unless you can get your report dates aligned. When you arrive at a base, you incur a Time on Station commitment that you cannot alter without special circumstances (which join spouse is not). It’s not a big deal, but as you know or will soon discover, PCSing is much easier if done together.

    I would research more information on civilian nursing opportunities within the AF before you get committed to commissioning.
