Downloaded Chester Wong's (pen name) first two books for free to my Kindle courtesy of Amazon.com for my trip to Yokota last week... He's a West Point grad Special Forces officer-turned-writer; but it is one of the most entertaining, honest and humble books you will ever read by an Army snake-eater! It's not the superman novel you'd expect (check the byline), this guy actually spends more talking about his failures and shortcomings than anything else . He has a great sense of humor and isn't afraid to tell the truth about his life as a SF officer, warts and all. Highly recommended, I've finished the first and have started on the second, and can't wait for the third edition to come out! More about Wong and his books on his website. Cheers! M2

OK, there's threads on taking vehicles to Germany and the UK, so unless you're going somewhere else I strongly suggest you find and read them. If you're going to either of the aforementioned countries, than you had better learn quickly how to or your experiences on this forum will get painful really quick. But, since I'm in a generous mood this evening, you are "aloud" to ship a second POV to Europe on your own dime. I did so when we went to Belgium in 2002. It's not cheap, and you have to take into consideration that every major US base in Europe has a "lemon lot" where you're usually able to pick up a good deal on a second vehicle, many times a local specs one. So unless your second car is something you really can't live without, it might be cheaper to sell it and buy a second one over there. Last recommendation, go look up the word "allowed" in a dictionary...

Still, I wouldn't have passed up the opportunity to own/drive a German-spec car. I had two 3-series BMWs while at Ramstein and they were a lot different than their American counterparts. Plus they have cars there that we don't see in the States. Having just been in Heidelberg for a week in May back I am still convinced that a large pick-up isn't the best idea...but it's certainly doable. Cheers! M2

Actually, while I haven't shot it yet, the Neos feels far from cheap to me for a $200 .22LR pistol. I did check and it had the firing pin replaced under the Beretta recall, and I've broken it down (kind a weird process with the wheel) but for the most part it feels like a solid and sturdy firearm. I did add some white paint to the front sight, and hopefully I'll get some rounds down it this Saturday; but so far I am happy in my initial impressions of the U22. All I wanted was a range plinker, and this fits the bill perfectly... Cheers! M2

Ain't nuthing new, back in "the day" we had AFR 30-1 Air Force Standards that came in a handy little pocket-sized version for the troops. I still have one, dated 4 May 1983, that laid down the law on how people were expected to act. Straightforward and to the point, none of this bullshit "culture" crap. I also have a copy of AFP 35-49 Leadership that I carried as a lieutenant and junior captain. It was dated 1 September 1985 and was "a basic guide for the new and for the aspiring Air Force leader." It stated the USAF leadership concept centered around two fundamental elements: The mission and the people (in that order). It was something I would carry and occasionally dig out to read every once and a while. Both would be good for today's young officers. Much more than this "culture" bullshit.

Damn. I keep saying I'm gonna seriously back off on the firearms purchases, and then I see this for sale at the local gun show this morning... Well, as you can probably tell by the setting in the above pics, I bought it. It's a Vz2008, a Century-built version of the Czechoslovak Vz58 rifle; and I got it with a bayonet, sling and cleaning kit for $500 + tax. While similar in appearance to a Kalashnikov, there are no interchangeable parts. The only connection is that it uses the same intermediate round (7.62x39). These are built on milled receivers but still lighter than most AK stamped rifles. It is also more compact. The fixed stock can be easily replaced with a sidefolding one without the modifications an AK requires. Typically they have "composite" furniture (wood impregnated plastic, much like pressboard) but this one has the older and in my opinion more desirable wooden furniture on it. Spent shells are expended upward and the magazines are made out of aluminum and not steel like most AKs. But since it is a completely different animals than the Kalashnikovs I've gotten used to, I am going to have to learn how it is built and works. Should be fun, but I've heard nothing but great things about these rifles and I've been wanting to get one for years as back in the early 1990s I was on a military liaison team in Bratislava and Trenčín in the former Czechoslovakia and spent some time training with the 3rd Regiment of their Special Forces, who used the Vz58 albeit with the folding stock. I plan on getting one for this rifle since they are simple to install. Cheers! M2

Colorado has a castle law. The statute states that “any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant.” (Source) In other words, he should've shot their asses in the first place. Of course, being a kind Texan, I would've kindly asked them to vacate the property immediately while showing them the business end of my .45. A simple 'vámonos' and a sweeping of the barrel would suffice; but after that fair and legally sufficient warning, there would be no 48 hour waiting period for them to comply...
