  1. Well, Mexico beach is about 15...

Depends on what you consider "nice".

MexBeach is nice and quiet and very beachy. But do realize that they roll up the sidewalks in the off season and there isn't anything there to keep the wife happy other than the beach and a few bars. Very few shops, one grocery store (the size of an average 7/11), a few gas stations and that's about it. There isn't much further east of Tyndall past MexBeach either. So you will spend a lot of time driving into Panama City and driving even further into PCB.

But don't get me wrong, if you like quiet beach living with generally nice folks and small, family run restaurants then MexBeach is the shit. They also have a free municipal pier that gets plenty of fish and a nice canal system if you have a boat. There are plenty of condo type deals that were built as the housing market was crashing and are available (rent or buy) dirt cheap (for beachfront property with a slip)

PM if you want more details.

  2. As far as drinking goes we were are G.O.1 for "Good order and discipline." No drinking or gambling at the casinos...Boo. It was addressed in the EXORD.

Did you get the impression that it was primarily a CENTCOM organized, run, and sponsored exercise?

(and driving here isn't THAT bad ... you just have to realize there are no rules ... ever ... for any reason)

  3. FU#K DTS (unless it's working)

Nope, F#CK IT all the time.

With the money spent on developing, implementing, constantly fixing, and answering questions about DTS each base could have an army of Finance Personnel ready and willing to actually help. And as a side benefit, we might end up with an army of finance personnel that actually have a shread of a clue about what the f#ck they're doing since they would get a chance to actually do their jobs on a regular basis.

  4. You won't get a DIP passport just for the exercise. It would probably be best to have an official since it makes the locals happy, but tourists will more than likely work too.

Keep the info coming ... I'm already in Egypt and not really playing in the BRIGHT STAR, just providing good ole' american alcohol.

This is the first BRIGHT STAR in 2+ years so the corporate knowledge amongst the folks that are/may be coming is pretty low. If you have any experience, even dated experience, share it. If you might be coming, ask the questions!

  5. I went to Bright Star in 07. We had a great time. We stayed at the Marriott in the Zamalek district downtown. The food on the property is pretty good and there were restaurants nearby that were really good. We had enough time to arrange a tour of the standard tourist spots. Very true about the friggin kids around the pyramids. Beware of the camel rides (sts) at the pyramids. They'll charge you ten bucks for the ride and they take you a couple miles out, get you off the camel to "take a picture" then tell you it’s twenty bucks for a ride back. The flying is pretty good. They pretty much leave you alone once you're away from the city. You can precoordinate low level routes with the MILGRP. We staged out of the international airport in Cairo. FYI, they have no idea what an overhead is. Great trip, would definitely go again.

Were you guys there on toursist, official, or diplomatic passports? What sort of transportation did you have? Did they let you drive or were you bussed around?

  6. Gents --

BRIGHT STAR (an exercise in Egypt) is coming this fall.

For those that have been, how was it? what should folks expect for flying, living, off-duty, etc.?

For those that are coming, what have you heard?

I'm not directly involved (yet), but if you're coming out call me at 010-102-1429 (inside Egypt).

I'll open the Air Force bar in Cairo for you!

  7. In 1995, an F-15E crew got spatially disoriented after their instruments froze on a night sortie. The only reason they knew something was wrong was because they heard the wind rush from outside the canopy - they were pointed at the ground going over 600 knots (above mach). The WSO (Capt Dennis White) died, but the pilot (Capt Brian Udell) survived with massive injuries. He holds the record for surviving the highest speed ejection from a US fighter.

Here is a story from Airman magazine and here is the story from the horse's mouth - not for the squeamish.

Here's a snippet from the less graphic text:

Back to the topic at hand - I wasn't aware that LM contractors flew test aircraft. Anybody know the approximate ratio of active duty to civilian test pilots?

Word from the ACES guys is that based on the sequencing, Capt Udell was likely close to subsonic when he actually left the Jet.

The current Fastest Man Alive is "Lucky" Shultz.

636knots in a block 50 from Shaw in full AB pointed straight down.

Also badly beaten up and all-around awesome guy.

  8. ...and the surface area thing, more surface area means more force to change the direction of an object, how is that difficult to understand?

    wrong.

Bigger surface means more force, sure ... sometimes.

Also means more drag, usually more weight.

so if F=ma (remember high school physics), and you increase BOTH the force (your big ass surfaces) and the Mass (F-16 vs. F-15, etc.), what happens to the acceleration? Can't tell can you?

And that's just basic static high-school level math.

    Aerodynamics, learn some.

You try to make me out to be stupid...

You're doing a fine job of that all by yourself

  9. For the F-15 A/C I have read that the wing loading is lower than the F-16 under most circumstances. I have also read that the F-15 has a higher thrust-to-weight ratio under most circumstances. The body and control surfaces of an F-15 are larger, allowing airflow to be diverted for a higher turn rate. The overall surface of the bottom of the F-15 should allow it to fly at slower speeds, and the higher thrust to-weight ratio should allow a lower loss of altitude during a turn-battle in a dog-fight.

How is it that I have read about and seen videos of F-16s winning dog fights against F-15s?

    Obviously don't violate OPSEC.

  10. When I tried it at Manas last year on the free WiFi it didn't work because most VOIP web sites were blocked by the filter, and since the skype web site was blocked I was unable to connect to the service. It did work at the coffee shop internet that you had to pay for though.

Related to the .mil computer thing, When I was deployed I bought a thumb drive that had Skype installed on it that you could supposedly plug in and run from the thumb drive without installing it on the computer, but before I could try it out on a gov computer the whole thumb drive ban happened. Too bad, that would have been cool.

Yeah, you can download skype at home and place it on a thumb drive. Search on the inner-toobs and find the command line stuff that lets it run from the thumb drive without installing anything on the computer (standalone mode) ...

As long as you don't mind pluggin your thumb drive in, it works like a champ.

Getting a microphone and/or camera installed can be tricky, though

  11. I love Skype. I talk to my g/f daily via Skype. With her in Japan and me stuck in the states it sounds like a cell phone call. The video can be hit or miss depending on how much bandwidth the Navy is using at that moment. iChat from Apple works pretty well too.

Skype should work on a Mil NETWORK as long as you have the admin rights to install it on a Mil Computer.

Skype uses the same ports and data paths as the World-Wide-Web ... so in order to shut it down they'd have to shut down the infro-net as well.

I got it to work on the Randolph network, YMMV

  12. dang hoss...you got all over that one like a SPIDER MONKEY!!!!

what does the F-16 do to prevent supersonic air from entering the inlet and causing a compressor stall?

Already pretty well addressed above, but to be clear it's the shape of the face of the inlet that causes the shock waves that yields subsonic flow, NOT the "bird splitter"

  13. It's just a structural member (STS), the front wheel sits under there.

It doesn't serve any anti-icing purpose for the engine, but since it sits in a very-low pressure area it is itself subject to ice accumulation and has a heater.

    Next question...

  14. .... but the Wing at which you are TDY can issue "more restrictive" guidelines. So, as in the case at Little Rock, it is mandated that if you are here TDY as a "student", then you must stay on base, even if that means moving you around between buildings on base if your graduation dates move back, or moving you off base if there is absolutely no room, and then moving back on once there is....

That SPECIFIC scenario is PROHIBITED in the JFTR in no uncertain language.

Take it up with the services commander, then the IG, then whatever finance office pays your voucher.

Don't let a shoe or overzealous lodging manager screw you (even though they may just be following "policy").

Fight it until the policy gets fixed, or they change the JFTR.

This shit is getting out of hand!

  15. If you are doing a partial-DITY, can you still be reimbursed for putting your DITY-moved household goods into storage even if you ALSO have your government-moved household goods put into storage?

If so, is the 90 day storage reimbursement based on weight or a direct reimbursement of the storage unit cost? Any way to calculate what you might make by putting some stuff in storage on a partial-DITY? It may be worth keeping a storage unit for the full 90 days even if you only keep a few things in it.

Partial answer, but last I moved the temp storage reimbursment was 95% of what it would COST THE GOV'T to store said weight (not your actual cost). That was a change from actual costs (2 moves ago). It made a huge difference in the actual amount of cash paid to temp store 6000 pounds of boat and trailer.

Again ... everything you need to know is in the JFTR ... worth the read!

  16. create a fake email address at one of the free email sites and send her an email stating how you feel. She will not be able to track it down

    FALSE.

There is NO anonymity on the inter-toobs

She may not be able to track things down hereself, but if she can convince someone it's a threat you are F#CKED.

Go ask a cop or OSI bubba how hard it is (STS) to find out who Jackass@gmail.com really is ... either through legal channels or 'unofficially'

Sack-up and talk to her like a real officer/man/human being/etc.
