  1. Well - seems like this thread has been hijacked by the SOS Crowd. But, if anyone out there is interested in the ACSC/Masters Distance Learning (DL) Course, I literally just finished it a few weeks ago (just in bloody time, if you know what I mean) and here are my random thoughts on this course:

Pile on ... I also did the ACSC/Masters thing.

    (1) - The books. Many are available electronically in a DRM'd PDF format for 10-50% of the price of a physical book. Also the electronic format is searchable (see #2).

    (2) - The Papers, don't fear them. Some people get excited about writing that much. 95% of the reading material provided is given in PDF format. When you write a paper, it is very easy to search terms and ideas in the PDF and find the facts to fit your ideas (as opposed to shaping your ideas to fit the facts). Vista allows you to search the contents of each file within a folder simultaneously ... which speeds things up a lot and adds a lot of depth if you have all the material saved locally. Perhaps a bit "intellectually Lazy" ... but remember the goal.

    (3) - You can start doubling up classes after your first 3 are complete (not including the orientation). I doubled up a lot and finished in a little over a year. The "counselors" are getting a lot better at recommending which classes "fit" well (syllabus, assignment, and content-wise) together for doubling up.

If you have any questions ... feel free to PM, etc.

  2. Next, the man forwarded at least 6 email a day. It got to the point that he totally chaffed the squadrons mailboxs and the boss never reeled it in, so the CGOs started the quiet revolt and set up auto reply so he got one email that said "THANKS!!!" every time he sent us something. He stopped in less than a day, email traffic dropped to almost zero.

That's a good one to keep in your bag of tricks for those soon to be an LPA....

  3. If you make a large order from the local Hooters you can usually arrange to have a few of the girls deliver the order.

They usually hang around for a while ... and they aren't strippers they're delivery girls.

USUALLY works out well ... occasionally you'll get a B team (or worse) strap-hanger that then stalks the squadron.

  4. Hey dudes,

I am an O-3 Navy hornet guy coming to Luke soon to learn how to fly the mighty viper. Also to drink beer and stuff. Dont know anyone, so I am posting this. I wanna live somewhere fun. Lemme know if you need a roommate. I will be there April through August . . .

    Thanks.

Based on the real estate market here, you should have NO problem getting an awesome pad cheap.

Probably 25-30% of ALL houses in this area are vacant.

If you see something you like, ask to rent it even if its just a "for sale" sign posted.

Anyone trying to sell will probably rent since nothing is moving.

PM for a phone number or email address if you want to talk neighborhoods or real estate agents.

  5. If you have the option, I would rather have an oral surgeon do it. I have had some miserable luck with military dentists.

A civilian sees you as a customer, who will come back for future business, so they will likely treat you with more care. A military dentist doesn't care about return business, because it doesn't affect his pay. Plus I've noticed when I go to see military dentists, they are overbooked and overworked, which shifts their focus away from the "customer" and more towards numbers. Not good!

Plus you can either chat it up with enlisted hotties (cool) or civilian hotties (even better). Your choice.

Avoid the Dental Hobby Shop on base for anything more significant than a cleaning! Even if it costs you cash out of pocket.

  6. I heard your point of view from the FAA guy when I was getting my PPL and it made sense.

Truth be told, I learn alot from guys with that type of attitude vice pricks who are ready to down you with the slightest error.

Everyone flys differently everyday. Sometimes, you are a little low, sometimes a little fast. As long as you understand the safety box, you should be fine.

    Cave

I have certainly enjoyed my efforts to get to fully understand the "safety box" ... it's the unsafe boxes that worry me.

  7. A question out of curiosity for any one who went through/going through FTU at Luke:

Is the 56th TRS full of viper drivers? If so, how often do they fly? Are they IPs? Are they attached to a squadron (i.e. 61st) that teaches B-Course in the jet? Or are they solely focused on the academic side of things? It looks like, according to link below, that they teach almost everything (Block 50 Specialization, FAC, Thunderbird/Aggressor pilot training, Sr. Officers Course, etc)? Keeping OPSEC in mind, could anyone elaborate on the mission of the 56th TRS? Looks like a pretty cool sq. to be a part of. Thanks.

    http://www.luke.af.mil/library/factsheets/...p?id=5003#56TRS

Luke is too big to have a single OSS (it would be a huge squadron). So the OSS does airfield, weather, flight records, etc. and the TRS does the academic stuff. In general the TRS employs IPs that are attached to a B-course squadron (just like an OSS would employ a pilot attached to a squadron in a regular fighter wing)

As far as being a cool squadron to be a part of ... you'd still rather be a regular line IP and just fly and deal with squadron stuff.

  8. I was TDY to Cairo for 200 plus days and enjoyed it. We all stayed in contracted apartments in Maadi which were huge and well furnished. Lots to do, friendly people. Large population of ex-pats and westerners that work there. Also had all the AFN you could ever want...

I do loves me some AFN

  9. This is definitely news to me.

Fellow crewdogs, this should be boldface:

    PRINT - CLICK

HARD COPY - SAVE IN MAC PURSE

    :flipoff: , "support" agencies.

There is a LOT of usefull info in the JFTR for TDY and PCS.

It is worth reading for familiarity.

    Just a few examples:

You only have to check for Non-A once, one Non-A letter is good for the entire TDY, no matter what billeting says.

    24 hour rule.

Your boat is HHG, you get paid for the weight of it through a DITY.

Your boat is HHG, you get paid for non-temp storage.

  10. for all you heavy guys, anyone know where this is written or is it just "unofficial" I can't seem to find the "reg" anywhere. (This is the "as long as crew is only staying one night, they don't have to obtain Non-A's" policy. Thanks

Read the JFTR ... It's painful at first, but worth it when some shoe tries to pull a fast one.

U1045 is a good section to have printed out for the lodging office, since they seem to screw it up the most.

The answer to your question is black-and-white in U1045.B.4 ... quarters are not-available.

  11. Went to the Destin one to mark the last night of a TDY at Hurlburt this evening. Haven't been to the Pensacola one; but for this time of year and the middle of the week, it was a good time. Cool looking place, their own brewed beer, amazing steaks... they have my vote. From a look at the specials and talking to some folks; seems like it'd be a blast on the weekend, or tourist season.

If nothing else; their selection of liquor in the gift shop is worth a visit in itself.

The one in Peniscola has an expansive wine list and a cool wine "cellar" you can get a table in. I don't the Destin model has a similar setup.

  12. Looks good for me, I ordered a gun rug for my new 1911 that hopefully will be here tomorrow. Nothing special, just couldn't find the same kind I have for my other ones from Bass Pro; so I ordered one. I want to make sure I can transport them safely.

But 4:00pm at the Bullethole on Monday, 15 December it is! Be there! Aloha!

    Cheers! M2

I'll bring a few hundred rounds of WWB .45 and we'll see what happens!

  13. Early next week is probably best for me, as my Mom arrives on Wednesday for Christmas. I may be able to come out after that, but the chances are less likely. If you and schokie want to drive over and meet at the Bullethole, that works for me. I can usually be there by 3:30-4:00pm, as I have to drive all the way home and get my gear as I can't bring it on base (it is a 10-minute drive from where I work to the Bullethole, but a half hour away from where I live; so it takes me about an hour to get home then get to the range).

    Cheers! M2

    Monday? 4pm? Who's in?

  14. Agreed. I usually frequent Bracken range since it's quite close to my house, though it's always busy and doesn't allow rapid firing. The few times I've been to the Bullethole I had a whole bay to myself and could do whatever I wanted (double taps, shooting on the move, etc). I just don't feel like driving that far every time I want to shoot.

Please PM if you go. I've been looking for an excuse to hit up the range.

Sounds like we're getting a gaggle together! ... I'll spring for ammo if anyone wants to tag along. Especially wives ....

(what do they consider "rapid fire" ?)

  15. Hoss

Where are you, Brooks, Randolph or Lackland?

You just missed the big monthly gun show, but there are a few large shops out there. If you are near Brooks, check out Dury's (819 Hot Wells, 210-533-5431). Closer to Lackland, there is Nagel's (6201 San Pedro Ave, 210-342-5420), The Powerhorn (2412 SW Loop 410, 210-674-5220) or Texas Guns (7122 Bandera Rd, 210-509-4752).

But my favorite is Ho Gun's (7914 Culebra Rd, 210-521-2288). Wayne's selection is not as big as those previously mentioned shops, but he's a lot friendlier and get can you better deals.

By the way, do you have a Texas drivers license? I am not sure if you can buy a gun here unless you are a resident or on PCS orders...but you said browsing so if that's all you're doing, then obviously it's not an issue.

And, for ranges, I know the Bullethole does rent. They have/had some full-auto rifles that you pay something like $30 per magazine. But if you are going to be in town for a while, PM me as I need to get to the range in the next week or so and if you want to meet up, maybe we can work something out.

    Cheers! M2

Thanks! ... I'm at Randolph, but I have wheels, perdiem, and plenty of free-time. I'm not looking to buy, but I do have to find some way to kill all that time.

  16. Wow, what an articulate and informative post, Hoss! I'm so glad you were here to help everyone with your finely honed skills. :M16: I'm sure the STUD's here in this forum learned a lot!

Perhaps you could expand on this post a bit, or would you prefer to keep preforming fellatio on yourself for everyone?

Personally, I hooked Final Contact for GK and table top EP's. There are so many ways to go wrong, it's not even funny!! It always feels like a swift kick to the balls, but then again, UPT is nothing but one prolonged kick to the junk. Hang in there and remember, just keep hitting the alligator that is closest to the boat and don't look back at the dead ones, you'll be fine.

Hey ... they opened up the thread to non-checkrides .... just adding a data point.

I hooked for pulling through on a 70degree nose-low recovery in tweets .... (rather than rolling wings level, then pulling).

  17. I didn't hook a check, but I did hook 2 rides in 38s...both for Over-Gs. Don't worry about your hook...it's really not a big deal unless you really start racking them up. Learn from your mistake and move on.

I hooked one ride, ever. Tweets in 1998. Not a checkride.

  18. Great Grandfather was Army Infantry in WWI.

Great Uncle Red was a Radio Operator on B-17s in WWII.

Great Uncle Delbert flew C-47s in WWII, B-29s and C-9s afterwards (retired O-6).

Great Uncle Schwartz was a Nose gunner on B-24s in WWII.

Dad flew Tweets in the 70s (washed out) then on to missiles (retired after 22 years).

Now me, a Radar Nav on the BUFF and start UPT this January.

Where does your great uncle schwartz live now? that story sounds familiar.

  19. My condolences from all the B-52 bretheren with clipped wings here in Offutt's Bldg. 500. Words do not say enough.

A picture of 0053 hangs 30 feet down the hallway from my office. It would be nice if they could hang a small memorial picture beneath it, but only a few here know that that was the jet.

For those still flying, take care and be safe.

You are the "they" in this equation ... get a picture or plaque and make it happen.
