That is one thing they pointed out in the podcast "Serial." If he hadn't deserted it would have been an amazing story of survival.

I'm glad he's back. I'm very unhappy that in doing so, we just validated that we will, in fact, negotiate with terrorists, and in doing so we put a price on every American's head.

  • I understand your logic, and agree this will turn into a giant monkey fuck; but those who died trying to find Bergdahl after he deserted and their families earned the right for a tribunal to examine B

  • He's back. And to those thinking we don't negotiate with terrorists or anybody else it's a movie line not a reality. The state department does it under the table all the time. We did it for Durant in

Yeah, it's not like these guys have a record for brutality against, well, really anyone not in their immediate group, going back since before Elphinstone started marching out of Kabul in 1842.

Important note...

He’s not a Sgt. He never really was a Sgt. He was promoted retroactively and was actually an E-3 when he deserted.

But now he’s private again.

Actually, he was a Sergeant, and he’s still a Sergeant since the demotion takes place 14-days after the sentence and/or when the Convening Authority takes action (which will never be before 14-days in a General Court Martial).

I don’t think you’re getting my meaning. He never went through the ordeal to become a Non-commission Officer. He was promoted to specialist (E4) a year into captivity. A year after that he was awarded E5 and with it the title of Non-commissioned Officer. He never boarded for it. He never had his points matched to his MOS to meet the promotional requirement.

He never did anything to actually earn his stripes except F up, walk away from his post, and get captured.

So when I read posts like I did earlier in this thread of “how does a coast guard washout make Sgt in the Army?” I think it’s important to note. He didn’t make crap, the Army and administration made him something for the purpose of his family and his face value. Bergdahl never was and never will be anything but another private.... and he can even claim that with any sense of honor now.

Best thing this guy could do is move somewhere remote, get a different hair cut, and never talk about the Army again. Jus wait until our collective short term memory moves on.
