Capt Malinda Hammond IS My Hero!

In the May/June issue of Airman magazine (pg 13), Capt Malinda Hammond, a Reservist with the 136 AW currently assigned to the 455 AEW, is pictured in a sanitized flightsuit with only a US flag and small 'FUBAR' morale patch on!

(this is the scanned pic from the magazine)

Now the question is, did she know she had it on or was she the victim of some shenanigans?

By the way, in the online version of that pic, the morale patch was Photoshopped out!

Also, it really shows the professionalism of the USAF/PA in that the "current" issue of Airman on their official web site is from March/April, and it is mid-July! :banghead::flipoff:

And before anyone screams about my publishing her name, the Airman article not only did that, but added her unit, hometown, deployed unit and location, as well as pretty much her whole life story! All of it was on their web version of the article as well...

Cheers! M2

FUBAR = Ops normal in a lot of places!

As for the morale patch, they aren't authorized because morale isn't authorized! Doesn't stop our former CSAF from wearing his!

And as to why she can wear one, she's a Reservist. They've got their own rules!

New site at http://www.airmanonline.af.mil/ - this is probably why they shopped the pic:

Jul-Aug letters to the editor

Inappropriate patch

I have always appreciated your articles and the strides you take to cover the amazingly wide variety of skills and occupations our Air Force has to offer. I would also say that your accuracy is spot on 99 percent of the time. And while there may be an occasional inaccuracy, I have never felt the need to single one out. However, the May-June edition’s “Airman At War” featured a picture I just can’t ignore. On Page 13, you chose to run a picture of a C-130 Hercules pilot wearing an extremely inappropriate “FUBAR” patch, while the only other patch on the captain’s uniform was an American flag. Quite the dichotomy. The world’s foremost symbol of freedom coupled with a disturbing symbol of vulgarity. Shame on the captain for the poor choice, and poorer representation of the Air Force. And shame on you for running the photograph.

Senior Master Sgt. Joe Kost

Offutt AFB, Neb.

Editor’s note: Sergeant Kost, I can assure you we’re not in the habit of running inappropriate photographs. This one slipped by inadvertently and for that we’re sorry. We’ve tweaked our review process so this doesn’t happen in the future.

Apparently not much to do in Offutt AFB, NE besides scrutinize photos and then write in about them?

Gonna have to see if I can find the photos of the 8th AF B-17s/B-24s with such 'unprofessional' markings and send it in.

The B-17 'Snafu-er Man" comes to mind, not mention "The Sad Sack," the "Behind the 8-ball" and others.

SMSgt Kost needs to apply a little professionalism to himself, he hasn't updated his entry in the global as it shows him still at Osan!

Plus, his office symbol in Korea was DPM, which means he's a personnel specialist. I think the guy that complained about the door gunner that was pictured in Airman a few years back who was not clean-shaven was also a personnel specialist. I guess they don't know what a 15+ hour duty day is like, or being deployed...

Holy shit, his sleeves are rolled up and he has his sunglasses hanging around his neck! The shoeclerks would shit themselves if they saw this pic! Doesn't he know what a warrior is suppose to look like?!?!

I have a pic with the SecDef and Gen Eric Shinseki (COMSFOR at the time) with a handlebar mustache from ten years ago...one of the best pics I have in uniform!

This one didn't make it into Airman, but it did make it into the Springfield and other local newspapers.

I have always hated this photo. However, The Air Force seems to love it. This thing is plastered everywhere, it is even on the AMC standard screen saver... that no mater how many times you change it the startup script brings it back.

If you want to fold the Flag backwards and disrespect it... keep it in the bedroom, with the homos.

The D-bag from Offutt is moving up!

Chief Master Sergeant Promotion List

That does not surprise me one bit. Gone seem to be the days when a Chief was a hard-talking, ass-kicking, heavy-smoking, fast-drinking, ass-kicking (yes, I know I said that twice) Son of a Bitch! Nowadays they sport SuperCut hairdos and play the PC game as well as the career-focused shoeclerk officers.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw a Chief with a high-and-tight flattop and who could make Curtis LeMay blush...no wonder a lot of junior airmen are missing the :bash: they need...

I've flown with her. She knew she had it on and there was zero chance it was a mistake. She keeps several pen tabs in her pocket and switches them to fit the situation.

You all should be ashamed of yourselves; Senior Master Sgt. Joe Kost put himself out there on the line to return good order and discipline to a unit that is in desperate need of it. How many of you would've done the right thing even though it may not "popular"? It's no wonder that he made Chief. He has the military bearing and good conscience of Jimmy Doolittle and Curtis Lemay. I'm sure he will go on to do great things and deploy for the first time in his career to al Udeid and set aircrew straight not only on a daily basis but hopefully an hourly basis.

Out-fucking-standing! You can never tell from these Airman articles. I hope she has received a significantly greater amount of support than criticism like the douchebag at Offutt! The Air Force was born out of defiance, and I am glad to see some people continue the tradition!

I have changed the title of this thread to now read: Capt Malinda Hammond IS My Hero! God bless her!

Good on her!

From AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 36-2903 2 AUGUST 2006 Incorporating Change 1, 6 August 2007,

blah, blah, blah, nametags and patches on the left and right shoulders, yada, yada, yada:

"3.2.5.6. Add-On Patches. MAJCOMs will publish guidance on wear of add-on patches (i.e., flying

hour milestone, instructor, flight examiner scroll, etc). Campaign/exercise patches are not

authorized."

So as I read that, if my MAJCOM Sup doesn't say that the pen pocket morale patches are right out.....then I am good to go. No Fat Chicks it is!

Since we are becoming patch nazi's, from the same reg, for everyone's FYI.

"3.2.5.4.....Chapter 1, Title 4, United States Code, specifies the flag colors

as red, white, and blue; therefore, subdued flag replicas are not authorized for wear on the

FDU/DFDU."

I keep the pic of T Mike with the morale patch on my thumbdrive, just so I can show the shoe clerks.

This reminds me of my time at SOS, when I had to tell a guy (a fellow Capt) to pound sand as he was grilling me about wearing my squadron t-shirt (which was yellow) on a Friday.

Clerk: "hum....according to AFI-36-2903, only black and desert tan shirts are authorized"

Me: "According to AFI-69-chow my hog, I don't care!"

Clerk: "I bet your WG/CC doesn't wear a yellow t-shirt"

Me: "You are right, he wears a blue t-shirt...he fly with a different squadron...now choke yourself!"

I hate clerks.
