  1. I’d say single, with the exception of students who’ve been married for a while and whose spouses have developed a good understanding of what the military lifestyle is like. Dragging a newlywed to Columbus, Vance, or Laughlin is a terrible idea. You’re going to be extremely busy, especially if your goal is to track T-38s and then get a fighter. She, on the other hand, is going to be extremely bored in a place with nothing to do, unless her job is portable.

  2. I landed one plane downrange, took off another one, drove home & now I tucked in my kids and am watching NBA on my couch.
If I’m lucky the airplane I took off will be minus a couple of hellfires when I go back in and land it tomorrow

  3. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths people will go to in order to justify defrauding the federal or state government. Other great schemes I've heard about:
Loading your car up with cinder blocks before you move
Claiming legal residence in a state you've never set foot in for tax advantage
Having family members charge you rent so that you can pocket the hotel payment on TDY
I'm sure the list goes on. At best you lie to your employer to make a quick buck and get away with it. At worst, you open yourself to serious civil & criminal liability.

I bought a bunch of ikea furniture to load into my car on my first DITY move. Paid for itself. But I wouldn’t call that fraudulent.

  4. You’ll need a $100k bonus to pay for the psychological damage of going to Envoy from the AF.

Not doing CyberAwareness and SAPR/suicide is worth more than 100k.

  5. Just watched Land of Bad. They couldn’t have picked a more fitting name. If you made a drinking game out of the Air Force inaccuracies, even Biff T’s liver would fail.

Are B-2s now a guarantee to fly B-2s, or is it still a T-38 first and later up to the Squadron if they want you to go B-2s?

  7. I like the Chase Ink Unlimited or Freedom Unlimited for general spending. 1.5 UR points per dollar (need a Sapphire or Ink Preferred) that you can then exchange 1:1 for Hyatt Points, which go a long way. Thepointsguy values a Hyatt Point at 1.7 cents, but if you use them at any of their All-Inclusives, you're probably getting close to 3 cents per Hyatt point.

  8. I am currently attending one of the flying trainings but unfortunately do not see myself being able to to finish. I have one more assessment and if I fail I completely wash out of the training. I have a couple questions about what the reclass process looks like.

Background: I am a 1st Lt that started his career in acquisitions. To be completely clear I do not want to go back. I would much rather gain experience leading airman and the 63A career field just doesn't provide that because it is very civilian heavy. I saw the list of "air force needs" and I feel like I would THRIVE in Security Force, Force Support, Logistics or Finance.

    My questions are:

    1. Will I be forced back into the 63A (previous AFSC) career field if I wash out of flying training or would I go through the normal re-class process?

    2. Because of my grad degree I do meet all of the qualifications for a specialty career (41A-
Healthcare Administrator). Is this a possibility?

    3. Is overall retention even on the table? I have been told that it is not from a couple others but want to put it out to the masses and see what is said?

    Thanks for any help!

Could you have picked 4 worse career fields?

  9. A CR this early is probably not going to end with reinstatement. However, the best thing you can do is have a positive attitude during your conversations with leadership. I saw a CR where the Wing/CC was primed to reinstate until he met with the student who conveyed a less than enthusiastic desire to stay in training.

  10. Does anyone have experience dealing with getting continuation after a DNP? Some NJP is in the picture from a few years ago that I thought I had recovered from, but that still played into a DNP for my first look at O-5. I’m assuming it’s not going to change next year. I’ve assumed I would get double passed over, but I was expecting a Promote at least. Does a DNP likely mean a DNP next year and how does that affect continuation? Thanks for any experiences.

The continuation board is separate from the promotion board, and I’m not sure if they actually see your PRF’s DP/P/DNP, but they will see the NJP in your records. I’ve never met anyone not offered continuation, but those who had NJPs were from their Lt days.

  11. My current unit is starting to be a tough situation for my family life and civilian job. My commander has given me the option to either stay or go. If I do leave, he said they will help me find a new flying unit.

As a reservist, what happens in the meantime during the process of looking for a new unit? Does the old unit usually keep you on a TR status? Can I switch airframes or do most units prefer you stick with the same MDS?

  12. The USAF Safe to Fly boot list has a handful of "authorized" boots.
For those of y'all who actually wear any of them, which ones do you like?  Which ones do you not like?

I wear the Belleville 330 STs, I had a pair of cold weather Rocky’s that were issued when we switched from green, and they were horrible. Not sure if the non cold weather ones are any better.

  13. I recommend a bit more research, because that is not how that works.  If you wash out, you don't get any aircraft.  The AF doesn't hand over C-17s, etc, to people who aren't pilots.

This is true for washing out, however, ANG/AFRC fighter guys who don’t do well in T-6s have been given the option to track T-1s and find a new unit to sponsor them.

  14. There is a HUGE difference between a T-6 only pilot and those who went before. The 100-ish hours of experience attained in T-1s/T-38s is huge, especially when addressed in the context of a syllabus designed for someone with over TWICE the experience.

Did I say anything to that effect? The post I replied to asked about continuing to fly the T-6 while doing T-1 sims.

  15. I have a follow-up question to this.  With the T-1 Sim Only Advance Phase of UPT now, are you strictly doing academics and sim rides for the entirety of that 5-6 month period of time?  Obviously not going to go fly the T-1, but do you get any real-world T-6 rides during that training?  It seems pretty wild that you get winged at the end of T-6 and then don't fly a real airplane for 6 months again until you go on to your assigned airframe.

Question 1: Yes, but I believe it’s closer to 3 months.
2: No, the rust from not actually flying isn’t going to be much of an issue as your follow-on aircraft is going to be vastly different than the T-6, unless you FAIP.

  16. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/money-losing-spirit-stops-hiring-flight-crew/

Saw that Spirit stopped hiring, which got me wondering about FDX/UPS.  Any of you cargo bros hearing anything about hiring starting up?  I had a few friends ask but I haven't kept up with the cargo hiring situation.

FedEx is overmanned given their jet retirements. Spirit is only pausing its hiring for the winter season and JetBlue merger. My personal take is that FedEx is subcontracting with cargo carriers like Atlas/Omni/Kalitta given their reduced DOD workload. If they get busy again I expect FedEX to stop shrinking.
