  1. IMHO, the writing is on the wall as far as AFSOC goes.

They have effectively shut the door to U-28s to anyone outside of AFSOC, UPT only or from another AFSOC airframe. I'm not sure if the same construct applies to the 130 world in AFSOC but there definitely seems to be a shift from embracing other communities to raising our own. 6th SOS is the only exception I can think of.

There are more than a few examples of the few who have made the switch only to find out that they better be faster, better and stronger than the guy who has been here his whole career. I'm not trying to dissuade just saying that if career is important to you then the faster you get to AFSOC the better.

FWIW, I did not come up in AFSOC directly out of UPT. I was not TAMI'd, but was one of those special cases that they allowed to cross over when I showed interest.

The only reason I bring this up to you is that anything is possible, but realize that the AF doesn't give two shits about your hopes and dreams. They care about filling allotted spots and if you happen to be in the right place in the right time, then you make it happen. Hopefully you can find happiness in whatever your assignment may be, or you will have one shitty time in the AF.

  2. This weeks entry into Badass of the Week is Joe Foss. USMC aviator from WW2, MOH recipient, namesake of the Sioux Falls, SD airport (Home of the Lobos), commissioner of the AFL, and about 100 other crazy accolades. A true BAMF!

Oh, and one time he was also detained by the TSA for trying to bring his Medal of Honor on an airplane with him – they thought about taking it away until he convinced them that thing wasn't a weapon, HE was the weapon.

  3. It pisses me off that the LA Times felt the need to release these photos of an incident that took place nearly 2 years ago. I definitely don't think that the military should be exempt from the press, but I think they shouldn't hide behind the "we were just doing our first amendment duties" crap that will probably get Americans killed in the name of selling papers.

W.H. 'Disappointed' L.A. Times Published Photos 'Two Years After the Incident'

White House spokesman Jay Carney reacted to the publication of photos in the Los Angeles Times of U.S. soldiers posing with corpses in Afghanistan by saying the Obama administration is "disappointed.. [with] the decision to publish two years after the incident," according to a pool report.

Carney is suggesting, it would seem, that the photos might put at risk U.S. soldiers fighting the war in Afghanistan. And that, since the photos were taken two years ago, there would not seem to be pressing need for the Los Angeles Times to publish the photos while the soldiers are in that war theater.

Carney also blasted the photos themselves--at least, the actions of those American in the pictures. "[The] conduct depicted in those photographs is reprehensible and does not in any way represent the high standards of the US military," Carney told the press aboard Air Force One. "And the president certainly shares in the defense secretary's opinion that this should be investigated and those held responsible will be held accountable."

The spokesman said he was unsure whether the president had actually seen the photos in question, though Carney is sure that Obama is aware of the scandal.

  4. As a veteran Flyer I know I have made mistakes on flights (minor ones) so I am a firm believer that minor mistakes should not be the downfall of anyone. I just wished it had come up to see what her response would of been. I wasn't judging, just wanted to listen to the dance.

Pancake read my post again though bud, I just wanted to hear the conversation not dissecting what kind of pilot she was, or future politican she may be because she didn't have enough gas.

It is "would've". A contraction of "would have". Nothing personal, but that just bugs the hell out of me and you did it twice.

I agree with the sentiment that great pilot does not a great leader make. However, when you're saying you were a shit hot pilot and that will make you a great leader, you better have been a damn good pilot.

  5. I seem to recall that Canuck Hornet doing airshow practice had something with a single engine compressor stall at high alpha and lost control. From the sounds (one nozzle open, one closed), that could be a culprit. Bolter King commentary?

But who cares, as long as people are okay, who gives a ###### about the airplane.

  6. Unfortunately, now a days, movie makers continue to lower their moral, intellectual, and overall script writing standards to these "generation-x'ers" whose only focus in life is "######, money, weed" and facebook statuses.

    /rant off

Fighter pilot attendance is up 6,900% to this particular genre of film.

  7. I have never been one of those dudes that loves aviation for the fact that it is aviation. However, flying an airplane with "US Air Force" painted on the side is the coolest thing ever.

Where you said you enjoy challenges, that makes me think that you would love to be a pilot. You'll go through UPT and think that starting the airplane is going to make you bleed from the ears at first. Before long you'll be doing aerobatics and flying in the weather off of some goofy looking drawing on a piece of paper they keep calling a "plate". And right about the time you get the hang of that, they'll add another airplane into the mix. Once you get the hang of that, you'll move onto a faster jet (usually) and it starts all over. Then when you're mister shit hot pilot dude, you'll realize that all that stuff you just learned for a year is just how to get to/from the actual work in the airplane and you really don't know a damn thing.

Repeat the same process through IFF/RTU/2 FLUG/ ACUG/ IPUG/Airdrop/ whatever. Very rewarding and constantly challenging.

  8. Douche of the year. Who actually read online SOS shit that was not gouge?

I thought it was funny that the article in question was added in 2004 and not discovered until 2012. So 1 person every 8 years reads the actual coursework, apparently. That checks.

  9. I love that her argument is over a technicality on the insurance companies definition of "passenger". If she's trying to argue that, they should counter sue her for damaging their airplane while being a trespasser on the ramp since she wasn't a passenger.

  10. I think one benefit to being a military aviator is that there are different ways of going about that career. Being a fighter pilot is much different from being a cargo pilot which is much different from being a helo pilot. You just have to match up your personality with what mission you choose.

Whenever people ask me if I enjoy being a pilot I tell them that it "beats working for a living". Best job in the world (for me).
