  1. It's a gross misunderstanding about sound waves. The concept is heterodyning(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterodyne). Two waves in opposite directions cancel each other out. There aren't "two waves" going into your ear, only an amalgam of sounds in one basic wave. The canceling effect tries to take out the harmful noises. It works and there is no research to indicate any long-term effects. As many have stated above, the hairs in your ears not vibrating=no noise and vice versa. Two times as many waves=twice as much sound. If you want to hear the effect when coming from opposite directions, try taking a mono sound from your computer, make it a stereo sound, then invert the signal on one side. It will create a surround sound effect and you will be hard pressed to determine the direction of the sound.
  2. They aren't on the last remaining Tweets at Sheppard either (well, duh...)
  3. Thanks to all for keeping us updated!
  4. 2! Dude, he's frustrated and if that's the kind of attitude his detachment is dishing out, I can't say I blame him. Why don't you try and help the guy out.
  5. Now this is the change I can believe in. This gives me hope.[/sarcasm] FIFY

    Fore!

HA HA! Callsign of the TV station was WFAA... ...ok, I found it amusing... I remember seeing the video of a news chopper that watched a guy mow down a state trooper while running from other cops. He went into a subdivision, hijacked a truck and kept a hostage. They tried to drive away and went right by the cops (unaware the suspect switched vehicles). The guys in the news helicopter were trying to talk to the police but there was too much of a time lag between them and the guys on the ground. So, the helicopter pilot descends and puts his hovering helicopter in front of the truck. The hostage (also the driver) was told to ram him and the hostage refused, as the blade would surely dip down and slice through them. They rescue the guy in the truck, but the suspect dies in a subsequent shootout. Wish I could find the video online. It was pretty cool to see the helicopter pilot take some initiative.
  7. Well, this guy made an interesting call over a radio to the PA system...
  8. At least you only have a self-destructive spirit and aren't trying to go postal...
  9. oh lordy, it is bad when a commander has a knee-jerk reaction and says "no more booze", but now we have a King declaring no more booze for the foreigners? WTF? I mean, you can still buy it downtown at Chili's, right? I know for a while when I was there last, the beer & booze were a little short because the delivery ran late. Hopefully this is all it is... ...then again, this is the 'Deid...
  10. You have a story like that and you haven't already pulled the tape. My faith in controllers is waning...
  11. I knew the guy and was certain he'd come up. He was a good guy and his heart was in the right place (making the studs look appropriate in uniform at a MAJCOM HQ), but I wish his brain and common sense were in the right place (have the FLIGHT commander announce that you're going to have random uniform inspections every day and check one or two each day at random. Then when he does them, the guy can fall back on "hey, just doing what the flt/cc said to do). Another example with this guy: I sent him an e-mail requesting further clarification on some policy before I go to the Captains in charge of the flight. He sends the request to the Captains anyway. As many of you know, the best way to diffuse a problem with the CC is to have a solution in mind BEFORE you go to them, or at least a set of solutions from which the CC can pick the best option. ("Sir, we cannot comply with new regulation XYZ.123 because of ABC. However, we already sent up an exception-to-policy letter detailing the issues and it's been approved." Hence, no problem.) I sat him down and had a heart-to-heart talk and explained that you don't do stuff like that. Come back with an "I don't know" instead of forwarding it to the bosses when the person specifically asks NOT to do that...especially someone who outranks YOU. To be fair, the guy had some side issues and he handled them like a professional, it was just issues with certain flyers that he had problems. I think he'll be fine in his career field and will do a good job protecting us.
  12. Sorry, but that claim definitely needs a source to back it up... ...so we can all show it to our wives and girlfriends (God help us if they ever meet each other...).
  13. Bronze stars need not be awarded for actual combat (leadership of combat troops is the primary exception). Not a good saying. Our MSG commander had a heart attack while PTing. This guy was no slouch either: he was a CRO!!!
  14. 2 Sorry if my comment sounded harsh. It was just an observation.
  15. 101 fatalities because of a burned out bulb: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Air_Lines_Flight_401
  16. NO WAY!!! I can't imagine how you've managed not to devolve into anarchy and chaos. There must be a melee of discipline problems and a myriad of other problems out there that you aren't telling us about!
  17. I'd let her know anonymously and let the University know too. That is likely a copyrighted photo. If it isn't, she doesn't have much to stand on... ...legally I mean...
  18. Picked up a copy at the BX and read it (before I knew there was a thread on it...). Excellent read if you want to know about this kind of history. It gets a little dry when it gets into who's in charge of what and who's the next guy who took over XYZ... Other than that, ya'll will enjoy!
