CV22 Crash in Afghanistan
SIB was released a couple months ago. Go find an SE type to pull it up in AFSAS for you...

C-17 Down on Elmendorf
Steve, I'm guessing the LM is part of the minimum crew requirements, and is thus required to be onboard for all flights. EDIT: confirmed in the 11-2C-17v3

Whitman, where are you quoting those stats from? EDIT: Thanks Steve for the link to the full thing. I missed that somewhere...

Gen Welsh - USAF Chief of Staff
I'm pretty sure he did. Also a son at USAFA while he was the Comm. p.s. unlike Ohio State, "the" does not precede USAFA... ;)

Gen Welsh - USAF Chief of Staff
I've still got a copy of the video of that speech, including the Q&A session at the end where he zipped down his flight suit.

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Q&A
last year I put in 50% of my base pay to TSP while I was deployed (so added benefit of being tax exempt), and I was below the poverty line in the eyes of the IRS when it was all said and done...

Customs and courtesies
Gonzo - We got word about 10 hrs ago that saluting went away after a week of no one doing it since the new "standards" came out...so no worries on all the other countries' ranks anymore! We had a guy salute an Army MAJ the other day and get yelled at for rendering a salute...I guess common sense finally prevailed.

and any SE person can access the message in AFSAS, so find your SQ-level FSO for that hookup. What matmacwc said about Tab access.

Bagram DFAC sets the fail bar
dmeg - sorry, I give myself a facepalm...it was a long day, and I work just down the flightline from the 71 ERQS currently.
-
Bagram DFAC sets the fail bar
first of all, many of the helo dudes at your base deploy. They take the brunt of the CAFTT 365s to Iraq and Afghanistan. Second, the HH-60 PAVE HAWK (not a Blackhawk - Army flies those) is the ONLY airframe in the entire DoD specifically tasked with CSAR/PR. So you sure as hell better know these things. BREAK BREAK Third, what was the answer about the OEI stuff? I know this has been argued in our community for many years...

Whats the funniest thing you've heard over the radio?
heard today, while sitting in the FARP... Helicopter coming in to land on the runway, requests to exit at Taxiway Charlie. Brit TWR: "Cleared to land RWY at Charlie" about 15 seconds go by Brit TWR: "XXX, as impressive as that was, you've just missed Charlie" Helo: "Uh, I meant Delta" Brit TWR: (Laughing in the background) "Roger, exit Delta"

ATC call sign questions
also, Callsigns have to be approved by the FSDO. They want to make sure there is geographic separation between the same callsign/number, etc.

Laptop for UPT/TDY
I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 11z. It's bigger than the mini (11.6 vs 10.1), but very light, and travels well. Doesn't weigh a brick, which is important to me. Only thing it doesn't have is an optical drive, but you can get a cheap external for that. I have encountered very few occasions when I've needed an optical drivel, tho...

Kadena information
1. off base, out Gate 1 in Mihama, Sunabe, Minato areas 2. Skype or Vonage works like a champ 3. I've seen cruiser bikes on the roads, though not many. Know that being an island, lots of salt in the air = corrosion to your bike if you're not careful. Also, you'll have to take the local conditions course give by the MSF (PACAF requirement) prior to riding. And I THINK, but not 100% sure, that to JCI your bike you have to ship it to mainland Japan.

Information on PCS/moves/moving (DITY, TMO, DLA, storage)
orders will say 2 per person (up to 70 lbs each), but check the airline baggage policy; many airlines will allow military travelling on orders up to 3 large bags per without incurring extra fees. If you take the rotator (Patriot Express), it's 2 bags per.
