  1. The dorms are better sized than I thought when I made the move. I planned and packed as if they were the size of large closets, but you have a lot of storage in the kitchen and a storage cage within your building. I would recommend using your own bed, but the rest of the furniture is just fine.
  2. In all seriousness...he could actually have a dorm room AND move in to your apartment. However, I have no idea what, if any, the consequences are if they found out. Plus there'd be NO housing allowance. Bottomline, he can leave base, non-duty formal release hours, as much as he wants to come visit you. But remember, he wont have that kind of time. 12 hour days, when he's not at work he'll be studying at night and getting up early. There isn't really much time for hanging out and watching TV other than weekends. Another tip...if the dorms are near full when he gets there, he'll have the option to live off!
  3. Gotta dig it man...at least you know early that you'll be the leader and you are getting it in your head. I managed to be CHOOSEN for the SRO duty of my current flight and didn't have time for that to set in before they started tasking me with stuff. Because it's early on in this T1 phase, it isn't too bad. When the senior class disappears and all that is left is us, they will concentrate on screwing us (through the SRO) as much as possible. I am fortunate to have a good flight who has volunteered to take care of things when they see that I'm busy. Encourage an enviornment with your flight where everyone can get together on free time, try to plan things early so they all get to know each other...otherwise your flight will break up in groups and it'll be hard to get people to enjoy spending time with those they don't get along with...which is most likely b/c they really never got a chance to know those people. Good luck man, shrug off the bull S%^*...b/c as a captain...you'll be treated like a Cadet by 1 LTs.
  4. I am aware of Altus being the schoolhouse for multiple airframes after T1s. So I assume I will be there at some point. I was just curious what the living enviornment was for some of you who were there. Dorms, family housing, off base, etc. (I will be married at the time I go.) I hear that it's a TDY and I'll still be assigned to Vance...but will they move me out or is what I bring all up to me and me getting it there? The reason I ask is b/c I'll be getting married after UPT and probably prior to follow on, so trying to get TMO to move my crap and my future wife's crap (which is no where near here) is a whole other issue. Any past experiences or info would be great.
  5. I do think it is up to the PIC whether or not they want to unstrap and check that door. Like C 21 said, if you are comfortable with your Mx dudes, then you should be fine. I have had issues with the side panel doors on the T6 (as i'm sure everyone has) and if there is no crew chief around to work their magic, the IP and I will just strap in and point to the door and they'll lock it down when they get there. However, off station I'd lean towards the safe side and probably get out and double check things.
  6. Not too sure about CAFB...but Vance is really convienent...the rooms are small, but fine for what you'll need when you are here. Sometimes off base can have it's perks, but bottomline is that it can and will get annoying going to and from home everyday and mulitple times a day once you are off formal release. If you forget something or need to run home real quick it takes 5 min to go and come back. PM Sniper5482 he should have some input
  7. It really just depends on what kind of person you are. You'll hear both sides of the story....bottomline if you have the right attitude and go to UPT with any Instrument knowledge at all it won't hurt, but if you plan to spend thousands of dollars that you don't have to get ahead for UPT, it's not worth it. The times it will hurt you, are if you are cocky about it and think that just b/c you may have some Inst. time behind you then you can and will quickly fall behind. Knowing about MDAs, how to read approach plates and enter holding patterns are all things that will put you a few days ahead...but that's it. Both the dudes in my class that have Instrument experience are doing just fine and not really struggling b/c they know how to fly these approaches unlike those who need to learn from the begining. Maybe look into getting some ground training on how to fly some of this stuff, but flying a 152 is not really going to help you fly the T6, however the knowledge will help.
  8. Ya...those are good...we have a Nav, Army (Fix wing Qual), and 2 Navy guys with some random wings.
  9. We were given ours here (Vance), the day before we started...I didn't get my wings on it nor did any of the USAFA dudes in our class. I hear that you can have them on there once your flight(s) are allowed to wear the class patch and, then I think we can get "real" nametags....I have seen some students around with their wings on, but they are much further along than our class. At some point you can, I would just get the basic black patch until you hear otherwise...you don't wana show up being "that guy."
  10. Just incase...don't put too much faith in thinking that these will be the cards you'll see. That's the same info we got and it was false. Keep in mind, to make you more stressed, it takes 3 seconds to change an IDE card and mess up your entire plan that you memorized.
  11. I'm not arguing at all with you...in fact we are all on the same page about FT, it IS in fact a joke, there is no one in the world who believes that more than I. I was just making a post that didn't apply the already stated info of how it really is, a post that I hope had some useful info that these cadets can take somewhat serious. And by commanding ablity, I simply meant that being Flt CC helps control your Flight with IDEs and improves your score. Not folding socks, haha. Cheers dude!
  12. this isn't an arguement about whether or not IDEs are dumb....b/c we all know not only are they dumb, FT in general is a pathetic excuse for military training. But instead of rambling on about how dumb they are, I figure I'd give them some sort of useful tip instead of showing them how to b!tch about things that will continue to go on whether they enjoy it or not. EDIT: FT and all of ROTC for that matter is a game...just play the game and "cooperate and graduate." [ 14. March 2006, 23:07: Message edited by: Shut up 'n color ]
  13. I wouldn't stress too much about IDEs...you'll have more time to practice these than you think. And usually will have a chance to do 2 throughout the FTU. Try to volunteer for Flt CC in the begining, b/c it will help your commanding ablities greatly.
  14. 1: Speed Break control is operated by a switch on the PCL, no lever for it. The lever you are looking at is the Canopy Fracture handle. 2: Handle under avionics and light CBs is the Utility Handle....not quite sure what that does just yet...but i'm off to my first sim and will find out and post it if no one knows. 3: Three little planes just below the landing gear shows your Aileron, rudder and elevator trim settings and where they should be set for take off.
  15. Ya, you can stand in the corner and call out everything...that's cool. They dont encourage it, but it's ok. You do need to know where to start your flight, each card has a different correct starting position...memorizing that helps. Knowing what commands to ADD helps...b/c you will need to add commands in every IDE card. Memorizing and having that advantage is great when you are tired, hot and can't think straight b/c some dumb CTA who thinks he's God's gift to the Military is yelling at you.
  16. When I went to FT, I had "the original" IDE worksheet that was supposed to be used at FT. Knowing this I figured I'd memorize it, and know where to start. And of course I did all the work for it and they changed every one!!! Don't put too much faith in it thinking its going to be the one at FT, b/c AETC will purposely distribute copys then change it TD 1!!!
  17. And of course they won't be able to talk about this story w/out continuously bringing up USAFA and it's claims from years ago. Seems like we won't ever stop with the negative publicity.
  18. What's the AF going to use in the future instead, for VIPs? Any plans to use the C 9 more?
  19. I figured in case you wanted to maybe use the degree or find a decent job after you get out of the AF, as opposed to just going through the motions to "check the box"...just a thought!! But I suppose having it is better than not having it at all....I'll look into it.
  20. Maybe something I'll look into in the future too...but I just have a hard time getting a degree from a school where the reaction would be HUH?!?!? Not really sure how businesses factor the school you went to or did online in. Is it even worth gettin an MBA if the school is just absolutly unheard of??? Or is it best to just HAVE the degree?? Just curious, always kinda wondered that?
  21. 8 TIMES?!?!! What do u do, sleep in it?? That's impressive, I can't even think of many times I should used it but didn't. Overall, it's good to have in case things come!
  22. Just spend the day at a clothing store on base closest to you. get sized, get what you need, then drop it off for tailoring. Sizing is KEY...buying it online is a gamble, sure you can return it, send it back, etc, but its a hassle...buy the accessories online if it makes you happier, b/c i'm willing to bet that the clothing store you go to will not have EVERY mess dress item in stock If you dont have or dont want to spend the $$$$ to get it....just don't get it. You dont need it right away, get it when you make $$$. I have used mine ONCE and that was only for the end of the year ROTC dining out!! and don't see anytime in the near future i'll be wearing it. 23. There always seems to be controversy between CNN and FoxNews... CNN: Osama.... FoxNews: Usama not sure which one is the liberal version and which is conservative.
  24. Yeah, Come'on Goose...step it up a notch at DET 370, would ya. haha. Don't worry about #s and just DO IT!!! I've seen you in action, keep it up and you'll fly.
  25. Unfortunatly this doesn't work anymore, dont know why, but I have called multiple times and talked to different people everytime. You need to be there IN PERSON W/ ORDERS to be on the wait list. I have orders now, but they won't take my name over the phone...first come first served...
