I'm trying to guess their rationale. Starting with the most friendly option and ending with the most cynical: Great job, team! Glad you're sticking around. Here's your money early. Keep up the great work. Maybe if we give people more opportunities to accept (i.e. a longer window), more of them will. If we can get people to commit earlier, that will help out with force management over the next few years. If sequestration continues, it will be harder to come up with the money in FY '15, so let's move some of that bill to FY '14. That way we can still pay the remainder that accept in FY '15. If sequestration continues, it will be impossible to come up with money in FY '15, so let's lock-in as many pilots as we can while we can. We're going to need to raise the bonus to meet retention goals, but why pay everyone more? The "I was going to stick around anyways" crowd will bite off early on the current, lower rate. That way, when we raise the bonus next year, we know we're actually targeting the "if the bonus is good enough" crowd, thereby meeting our numbers while saving money. My bet is a combination of #2, #3, and #4. Only #6 would really be a trick.

I taught at SPS for 3 years in the 38. You could ALWAYS tell which stud had a secret white board at home to keep track of the scores, and there was always at least one of 'em in every class. Strange...things never worked out the way they thought it would.

Columbus, Laughlin, and Vance all score the T-38 checkrides the same...upgrades...it's the same syllabus at all three bases. Sheppard is old school downgrade style...different syllabus. AFPC dishes out jets to each SUPT base using a Dungeons/Dragons 69 sided die and a Ouija Board...he doesn't care (or know) about your upgrade for close trail or form takeoff. Follow-up on my search. Just got home from an airline trip and scoured through my Flight records. The earliest record I have is the listing of my UPT class graduates, there are no records prior to that. On one of the earlier papers there is a note that said all "Student Flight Hours" (ie. UPT) records are missing and cannot be found at CBM. So it looks like Columbus dropped the ball somewhere and lost records. I guess it will remain a mystery..PS only one person actually returned calls or e-mails at CBM, the rest didn't even bother to call back...WTF, Its still an Air Force Base! You'd like to think people still try. Also, for some of you who were questioning why its difficult to figure this out, back then 1986, classes were much larger than now. We had well over 65 studs, and some think it was more. A Lot of guys were married and didn't hang with the single guys etc, so its hard to figure it out from class pictures etc...the best Pic I had showed 23 students posing in front of the T-37 gate guard and only 9 graduated from this group picture taken April 1986 Nice socks!

It's working. Just like we left Japan and Germany after WWII, oh wait, we didn't.

And he'll probably stay a CMR pilot until his commitment is up, at which point he will be passed over for major and invited to leave.
