  2. Doubtful for tomorrow morning. I'd expect a call today/tonight. If you do somehow make it to public release without official notification, I'd say that's a positive sign for your chances. It's a pretty big breach of etiquette to let a non-select see the results without prior notification he/she didn't make it. Good luck man

  4. Your Weekend U-2 History & Triva... 20 June 1956 was the date of U-2 Mission 2003... the very first U-2 operational flight. Nine days earlier, Det A was opened at Wiesbaden Air Base near Frankfurt. Although the West Germans approved a Soviet overflight, Eisenhower wouldn't approve it because the USAF Chief of Staff was visiting Russia at the time. That would have been a bit rude... and pretty balsy. But, U-2 pilot Carl Overstreet, the 13th pilot to fly the jet, was allowed to enter East German and Czechoslovakian airspace, right where the borders of East German, West Germany, and Czechoslovakia came together, in thehops that the commie radars wouldn't pass off anything they saw. It worked! Overstreet then turned north and flew over every major city in Poland before backtracking via Prague. Success! The mission used wet film and SIGINT. The film was immediately flown back to the US and developed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester NY and the results of the new A-2 camera were impressive. It used three 24" focal length lenses to get a 36 mile wide swath of earth. Iron men, wooden ships. It was a different era, for sure.

  5. There is a pseudo 5-year now in that you can opt out of IPZ consideration up to 3 times for specific circumstances. Once you complete your IPZ look however you can't Opt Out of your APZ look. Not the "5 year IPZ window" they promised but it may be useful for some people. Data on MyPers. The ‘Opt Out’ authority allows officers in the grade of captain through lieutenant colonel to request to opt out of promotion consideration to the next higher grade for one or more of the following reasons: To allow an officer to complete a broadening assignment; or To allow an officer to complete a Department of the Air Force-funded resident graduate-level education program (e.g. Masters or PhD); or To allow an officer to complete a career progression requirement, the accomplishment of which has been delayed by either a broadening assignment, a Department of the Air Force-funded resident graduate-level education program, or crossflow to a new career field; or To allow an officer to complete another assignment of significant value to the Department of the Air Force

  6. This, BigRed, and AF doesn't understand all the implications yet, the 5 yr look is NOT yet mandatory but recommended legally I believe (prob. to get the glacier moving that way before legally mandatory)

  8. Disagree man—if that were the case for me, then I wouldn’t have made O-5. I was a Top 1/3 graduate at SOS and was a Wing CGO/qtr, but had very few strats as a Lt and Capt (and those weren’t anything great). As a Major in a staff job I just did my normal stuff, but I guess that was enough for my O-6 to give me a couple of solid Major strats and pulled a DP on my IPZ board from the 2-star…which is what really matters to your O-5 board IMO. That and a breadth of different experiences (ie duty titles)/leadership roles. I’ve also since been a Wing DS and had a voice on the wing strat meetings…a Major can get a solid push if the bosses think they deserve it, regardless of their prior record. But I’ll also add this—competition is everything. If you’re competing with weak swimmers, it’s much easier to look good and that can be a make or break when it comes to strats, awards, and getting a P vs a DP. Sucks to hear about you and other good guys and gals getting passed over. I just wanted to add a bit of a different perspective. Good luck!

  9. I’ve been retired almost 3 months and I received a text, a phone call, and an email telling me it was a holiday. Time for them to get me off the notification lists. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

  10. Last week oil, this week beef. First, WTF is going on? Second, if I'm forced to eat soy products, that's my line for going kinetic.

  11. The folks over at The Drive found Extreme’s web-presence and just wrote about it. https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/39267/crazy-montage-of-bad-landings-shows-how-hard-it-is-to-tame-the-u-2-dragon-lady-spy-plane Extreme was the one that did the really cool Aurora Borealis pics from the U-2 that made national TV/media about mid-2018. Was it worth the blowback from leadership? I’ve never asked him.

  12. I found out on Friday through unofficial channels that I was not selected. It is what it is, unfortunately.
