My next trip to the sim will include a shift in CG if they can set it up.

Please excuse a question from an ignorant but curious person:

In the simulator, I wonder if you will be able to see how much CG shift can be countermanded with control inputs (elevators/stabilizers fully deflected), i. e. is the airplane even recoverable at near max TO weights? Also, can one maintain enough energy is to keep flying under these conditions? Maybe it can be simulated by moving fuel aft?

My apologies if I should not be asking questions like this. I am not looking for numbers, I am just curious if it is possible.

  2. You can't claim exigent circumstances (I.e. immediate danger) and then proceed to systematically search 20 city blocks and then it turns out the dude was hiding outside their "perimeter". If people wanted to let them in, then by all means but if I opened my door and said "he's not here", the police unless they believe otherwise should move on since a) they have no proof he's even there (or they would have a warrant) and b) they can't prove that I'm in immediate danger (then there's no need for one)

I think you are doing a lot of second guessing.

Their sworn duty is to uphold the law and conduct their business within those standards. The burden of proof is on the officers to prove now that their 20 block door to door search fell into the immediate danger to each and every occupant in each and every house. They were shooting in the dark and hoping to hit something, which while it may be the best option they had doesn't mean they are above the laws.

Actually, the burden will be on the Commonwealth's Attorney and the Police Leadership, if that even gets tested. These guys in the video will hopefully get to go on with their jobs.

As for punishment, I respect what they were trying to achieve, maybe some law refreshers for them. Mainly I want someone to hold their feet to the fire and show them that laws apply to them still.

Seriously? Send them back to school, so that one of them will raise his hand next time and say, "Sir, this is illegal, I am not going to disturb these people."

Their leadership is entirely responsible for them being there and carrying out their actions. One could go a little further and say that Dbag one and two were consequentialist here, and responsible for the entire chain of events.

ETA: there's no perfect solution in a free society, because the government is the one restricted, which may seem inconvenient but I would rather have more freedom and the danger associated with it, than more government control and the same danger. Notice what is constant in this equation? The danger,it will always exist, and therefore I will take the freedom.

Agreed. Our government needs to be held in check as often as possible when it comes to our civil liberties. However (again), I think this situation was extremely unique.

  3. So what would've happened if this had been a non-communist state (like Texas) and the Swat team had barged in on someone armed and ready to defend his family against the terrorist prick? Something like this? http://www.huffingto...-_n_867020.html

You are mixing apples and chili peppers. The expectation was completely different here, the homeowners knew why Law Enforcement was there. Under other circumstances, like say it is dark, 0300 and one is startled awake by flashlights and shouting - another matter entirely.

    <SNIP>

I also don't really trust the labeling of the video. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that somebody took video of something else, like a drug bust, and labelled it this way on youtube. It could also be that the homeowners got belligerent and made threats to the police, or that there was actionable intelligence on that specific house in the course of the search. I think we'd be hearing more from the hundreds of homeowners who had their 4th amendment rights violated if it really went down like the person who posted the video said it did.

Exactly, we weren't there. I think the circumstances in this situation were almost unique.

  4. I hope they get their asses sued off.

While this sure seems to be another "Norm" established in our free society, and not a good thing in general - I wonder if under these exact circumstances, YOU have an alternative to how they went about their duties?

And why do you think these guys should be hauled into court and sued for doing their sworn duty? Of course, I know the answer is that you want to punish them. How far would you go to punish them?

Some more than others; but I can pretty much guarantee that there will be a very strong case built on the surviving member of this attack, thanks in part to the work of the FBI. I never said they are spotless, but I challenge you to tell me who could do better.

    <Not SNIP>

And I honestly don't give a ###### about this asshole's rights, he attacked the very country that offered him shelter from the shithole he grew up in. I spent 25 years in service to that country and ######tard liberals don't give a rat's ass about my rights; but they will jump through hoops to defend his. ###### them and all like them! :flipoff:

From what I saw and heard via comms, the FBI directed much of what took place on Friday, and yet when it was time to be happy (some might say celebrate) the capture of Dbag2, the FBI throttled back and let the local and MA state folks enjoy the limelight. I think the "FBI Guys" deserve a free drink next time I see one.

  6. I'm pretty sure that is from his own bro running him over during the getaway...partially anyways.

According to the stuff I read earlier, the "Side Wound" is where the physicians sliced into him, in order to get at his heart to try to restart it. The redness around his face and neck is the result of whatever IED he detonated. I see one good sized hole in his side, and count two hits to the left arm.

They apparently threw five devices at LE this morning, only three detonated (1 grenade, 4 pipe-bombs).

Lastly, his brother, in apparent panic ran him over trying to get away last night.

Kerry in China to Seek Help in Korea Crisis

    By MICHAEL R. GORDON

    Published: April 13, 2013

BEIJING — Secretary of State John Kerry flew to China on Saturday and sought to elicit China’s help in dealing with an increasingly recalcitrant nuclear armed North Korea by saying that American missile defenses could be cut back if the North abandoned its nuclear program.

Mr. Kerry’s trip to China, his first since taking office, is part of an intensive three-day push to try to calm tensions on the Korean Peninsula that have threatened to spiral out of control and rattled world leaders.

In a news conference, Mr. Kerry suggested that the United States could remove some newly enhanced missile defenses in the region, though he did not specify which ones. Any eventual cutback would address Chinese concerns about the buildup of American weapons systems in the region.

After back-to-back meetings between Mr. Kerry and China’s top leaders, the two countries announced that they endorsed the principle of ridding the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons, though China did not state publicly what steps it might take to achieve that goal after years of reluctance to crack down on Pyongyang.

“We also joined together in calling on North Korea to refrain from provocations and to abide by international obligations,” Mr. Kerry said.

Worries spiked last week as the South Koreans predicted the North could launch a new missile test any day and after the disclosure that an American intelligence agency concluded for the first time with “moderate confidence” that North Korea learned how to make a nuclear warhead small enough to be delivered by a ballistic missile. The administration has since said that it was premature to conclude that Pyongyang had a fully tested weapons system.

Mr. Kerry’s stance on newly fortified missile defenses appeared to be a selling point to get China, the only country presumed to have any real influence over North Korea, to do what it has long resisted — crack down hard enough that North Korea’s leaders will give up an increasingly sophisticated nuclear program.

In recent weeks, the administration has dispatched two ships outfitted with Aegis antimissile defenses to the region and said it will speed up the positioning of land-based missile defenses on Guam to protect allies in the region after North Korea’s threats to rain missiles on United States troops there and on South Korea.

Many Chinese believe the antimissile systems are part of a containment strategy against them at a time when the United States is pursuing a “pivot” to Asia.

In the past, China has been motivated by a different fear: that any move to destabilize the North would lead to a collapse of the regime and deliver the entire peninsula to the United States’ sphere of influence, possibly bringing American troops in South Korea closer to its border.

On Sunday, Mr. Kerry met with Japanese leaders in Tokyo, where they agreed to keep working toward a nuclear-free North Korea and suggested that direct talks were possible under certain conditions..

North Korea has a clear choice available, Mr. Kerry said, according to The Associated Press, and will find “ready partners” in the United States if it follows through. The Japanese foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, was more specific, saying that Pyongyang must meet its commitment to earlier deals regarding its nuclear and missile programs and on returning kidnapped foreigners.

China’s cooperation is essential to the Obama administration’s strategy of holding a tough line on Pyongyang in an attempt to achieve the type of long-lasting solution on the nuclear program that has eluded a string of United States presidents. Previous administrations responded to North Korean provocations by eventually offering aid to tamp down tensions, only to see the North’s promises to relinquish its nuclear program evaporate once the aid had been delivered.

Mr. Kerry said he explained to China why the United States felt it needed more missile defenses in the region.

“Obviously if the threat disappears — i.e. North Korea denuclearizes — the same imperative does not exist at that point of time for us to have that kind of robust forward leaning posture of defense,” he said. “And it would be our hope in the long run, or better yet in short run, that we can address that.”

Mr. Kerry’s remarks in Beijing are likely to stir concern among staunch advocates of missile defense in the United States, who also see antimissile systems as a means of responding to China’s growing military might. His aides say any changes would require the input of the Pentagon.

Even if China were to take a strong position with its longtime ally, possibly cutting back essential aid and fuel, North Korea might not fall into line. Under its new leader,Kim Jong-un, the North has snubbed China several times, including refusing Chinese entreaties to cancel the recent nuclear test that set off the war of words on the Peninsula.

At the core of the issue is the United States’ inability to draw North Korea into a serious round of nuclear talks. North Korea’s apparent determination to expand its nuclear weapons program and the American demand that it commit up front to eventually relinquishing those arms have raised the question of whether there is even any basis for negotiations. “China has an enormous ability to help make a difference here,” Mr. Kerry said on Friday in Seoul.

The Chinese stance on North Korea has never been a simple one. On one hand, the Chinese prize stability and are eager to avoid a crisis that would spawn a flood of refugees or prompt the United States to shift more forces to the Pacific. On the other hand, that same concern for stability has meant that it is reluctant to take steps that would undermine the North Korean government’s hold on power and eliminate a friendly buffer between Chinese territory and South Korean and American forces.

In Beijing, Mr. Kerry met with the new president,Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, PremierLi Keqiangand State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

Mr. Yang said at a dinner with Mr. Kerry on Saturday night that China was committed to “the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula.” But the Chinese state councilor also stressed that the “issue should be handled and resolved peacefully through dialogue and consultation.”

To encourage the Chinese to deal with the North Korean nuclear problem, Mr. Kerry said that he had shared “very in-depth” information illustrating the danger of how a nuclear North Korea could promote the proliferation of nuclear arms in Asia and the Middle East.

Mr. Kerry said his aim was to find a way to revive the goals of the six-party talks on the North’s nuclear program, which have been stalled since 2009 when North Korea withdrew. The talks have included North and South Korea, China, Russia, Japan and the United States.

He also portrayed cooperation on North Korea as just one element of a “model partnership” the United States hoped to build with China on diplomatic, economic and environmental issues.

Mr. Kerry said there would be additional discussions in the weeks ahead with the Chinese that would involve American intelligence experts including Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The two sides also called on North Korea to refrain from provocations, an apparent allusion to a potential missile test the South Koreans said could happen soon.

Bonnie S. Glaser, a senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said China was very frustrated with Mr. Kim and was taking some action, like cracking down on the flow of illicit North Korean funds through Chinese banks. At the same time, she noted, the Chinese fear the United States’ recent actions, including a test flight of B-2 bombers over South Korea, would further incite the North.

The United States “keeps sending more fighter bombers and missile defense ships to the waters of East Asia and carrying out massive military drills with Asian allies in a dramatic display of pre-emptive power,” the state-run news agency Xinhua said Saturday.

Apologies for length (sts), hey it's the NYT.

Amusingly, Kerry is working with Wang and Yang.

  8. There is a very good chance these actions are all rhetorical, as NK stands to profit from from these activities, and the activities of others right now. There is also a history of this type of behavior, and the attention that it wrought.

    NK Gain:

We have just demonstrated our response. They now know many of the steps we will take in the future to defend the South. This includes everything from our movements to changes in things like what we put on and in the air.

An increase in aid from other states. A big win for NK. They are banking on this eventual outcome.

Fat-little-boy leader demonstrates his resolve to his people, and leadership.

NK can point to an increase in our defensive posture, as an increase in aggressiveness to his people.

Lastly, the western press, who regardless of political affiliation, has at its center - profit from an increase in drama anywhere. For the press, no election can be too close, or for that matter any conflict be too close - to drive listeners and viewers.

Just one big fart all around.

  15. I would love nothing more than for human exploration of deep space to be possible; however there is another piece of evidence pointing to it being unlikely-- we haven't been visited by an alien race. This likely is because one of three reasons:

    1. We are the most advanced civilization in the universe (or at least on par with everyone else)

    2. We haven't been "discovered" yet

    3. Einstein is right, and they can't go faster than light either.

Sorry, but I think you are limited by your analytical imagination, or at least, the concept of what might be. It almost sounds like your view of the future is linear (unchanging). I also sounds like you think that where we are now is just about as far as we are going to get? That is really a very sad and limited view of the future. The future can take shape with more than a simple linear extrapolation - it just needs a little imagination.

  16. Women banned from water slide after ['Intimate'] 'injuries'

    http://www.thelocal....0803-44149.html

A German water park has banned women from a high-speed slide - claiming whooshing water was causing “intimate injuries”.

The park's manager told The Local the X-treme Faser slide was made men-only after several women complained of being hurt by water as they flung themselves down the slide, where people can reach speeds of 72 kmh.

Marcus Maier said six women had reported injuries to the genital area last year, and some of them had to be taken to hospital. No men have reported genital injuries, he said.

"These injuries are caused by the nature of the female anatomy," Maier told The Local.

But the Professional Association of Gynaecologists was sceptical. A spokeswoman said there was no medical reason why women shouldn't use such a slide - unless they were pregnant. She said she had never heard of women suffering waterslide-related vaginal injury.

Maier said few women have complained about the men-only policy.

"We are trying to do right by women; we don't want to discriminate against them," said the manager of Galaxy Rutschenparadies, which is part of the Therme Erding sauna complex near Munich.

Asked if the park had considered reworking the slide, Maier said it had never been seriously considered. The slide was new, he said, and reckoned it had cost up to €100,000 to build.

"We have some slides you can't go down unless you weigh 50 kilos - you could argue that's just as discriminating,” he said.

Still, there appears to be a glimmer of hope for female water slide enthusiasts: The park is working on building a protective suit for women to use on the slide. "Like for ice hockey," said Maier.
