  1. So here’s where we diverge from the “why are these issues happening” discussion and get into the whole philosophy of diversity thing. I didn’t really want to engage earlier but I think this is important.

Do you think there was ever a “meritocracy hiring system”? I don’t. There was a good ol’ boy network, but never a meritocracy. One of the benefits of of diversity is tight there in the description: you diversify your hiring pool. You end up with a larger pool of qualified candidates than you would’ve had before. Does it work perfectly? Of course not. But neither did the old system. You don’t think Billy Bob ever got put in the front seat of an F-4 or 727 because his brother-in-law knew the chief pilot & not because he was the best guy for the job? It’s all well and good to want to hire the best candidate but often times that’s an unrealistic pipe dream. Always has been. Always will be.

For the folks arguing that we are less safe today because “diversity”, I challenge you to prove it. Don’t give me some one off, anecdotal example. Show me statistics that say commercial aviation is getting progressively less safe. Because all of the evidence that I’ve seen shows that we are far safer now than we were when Jimbo the Chief Pilot had the sole and final say on who got hired.

Explain please how the hiring pool is more diverse and what that diversity looks like on paper. What categories of diversity I guess is what I’m asking.
  2. Really? You're an educated adult and you have a hard time believing that verbal de-escalation is a real thing?

I got it, the left sucks and has completely mischaracterized the entire event. Totally agree. But being intentionally stupid just doesn't seem like a logical solution to this problem.

It's quite clear that a lot of people in this thread have never been afraid for their physical safety.

You’re making my point. If they are afraid for their physical safety why not withdraw? If nothing they do is going to have any effect and they are in danger and out numbered why stay? They weren’t protecting anything as they were already giving free reign to the building. Doesn’t make sense.

I have a hard time believing that this tactic was what they were actually trying to do. Seems more like a convenient excuse after the fact. Poor choice of words on my part. I know it is a thing. Just hard to believe that it was the tactic chosen in this case.

    You assume I’m educated…..
  3. A nice bottle with a message and if you have a local flare where you are from, beer, alcohol, food, whatever, bring it and present to the masses. This is a moment you can never get back. And if you bring a six pack of Miller light, that’s all they will need to know about you. They might not even drink. But if you don’t value your future with that unit and don’t do something special and put effort into it, it’s an easy pass for them. They want someone they would like to hang out for 10+ years and has a good attitude and if you have a family, that they get along with you. You could have the best resume ever but if you’re awkward or don’t make an effort to make a splash in some of the only chances you get, then it’s an easy pass. There isn’t a shortage of people trying to get into a unit. There is a shortage of good people with their heart and mind in the right place that people want to go to war with.

A bottle or special gift or a way to set yourself apart is just a small subset of who you are. Don’t just get a bottle and leave it. Make a splash. Do something to make them laugh show them why they want you and can’t be without you.

The pilot shortage isn’t so bad that people will hire someone they don’t want to be around in military aviation.

    Generally speaking.

  4. If his retirement is a 20 year active duty retirement you have to do the time in your final grade on active orders. If all you want is the part time IMA rank at 60 or whenever you get a part timer retirement then have 3 good years at your rank or whatever time requirement there is but I’m not sure what the IMA rules are. Never met one.

  5. Gotcha. Yeah there is paper work to transfer your earned not taken leave from one set of orders to the other. I’m just trying to see if I can curtail and use my leave at the end. I’ve heard there are some airlines that require you to prove you are on terminal with the type of leave and I’m trying to figure out how I can get around it.

  6. Anyone know if airlines care if you are on military leave while working for them? I’m not talking about terminal to end your military career. I’m talking about a guard or reservist being on a set of orders and needing to get rid of leave before the orders end and using it while working for the airline. So technically the orders are ending but still active and you are using your leave. Similar to terminal but not retiring.

  7. And one could say the former president had the most successful 3 years of any precidency and ushered the country into an amazing unparalleled prosperity which the current presidency has destroyed. Our country is alot worse off right now than it has been since Carter. And worse than then.

  8. Alright. Question for the group. Might be retiring or separating in the next 1-2 years but buying a house soon. Currently no VA disability but as a guardsman I can always apply. I’d like to preserve my ability to get my VA funding fee back and close on a home. I’ve heard that it’s possible to file intent or just file for one think VA I know I will get and refile for everything else later? Or maybe there is a 3rd option. Any recommendations?

And how does this work with VA loans and closing timing?

  9. Well that’s changing the discussion a lot and wasn’t at hand. Also it is a hypothetical made to trap. I believe when someone in a relationship is asked a question by their significant other such as the one above, it could be referred to as a $hit test.

I never said it was a conspiracy to make the rich richer even though it did have partially that effect on some.

But I think in general taking more than what is fair from those who build up aspects of society, give opportunities, and help propel our society to heights never experience in this world is wrong and nearly pure evil. Even most of the poorest people in this country are better off than the large majority of the rest of the world.
