  1. 3. Well said.

    4. With a few minor tweaks (so it's not directly attacking E-9 Numbthumb) that would be exactly the type of short, sharp, and effective reading I would expect in PME. Much better than the 70/30 drivel mix that is currently shoveled off the truck.

  2. OK gentlemen, I've decided on purchasing my first handgun and I'm looking for some input. I've been doing my own research but any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking for something just to keep around the house and take to the range occasionally. Trying to stay around $400 or below, want 9mm, compact or full-size, new, reliable and easy to shoot.

Ideally I'd like to someday own the following: Sig P226 NSW, Beretta 92fs INOX, WWII vintage 1911. Right now these are all out of my price range so the decision is to either buy something cheaper now or wait and save.

I've narrowed it down to the Sig P250, Kahr CW9, Ruger P95, or Sig 2022. Others I have considered but ruled out are the Glock 17 (doesn't feel good in my hand) and Springfield XD9.

Go with what feels good in your hand and is ergonomic to operate. Slide the slide, drop the mag, etc. before you buy. Also, if you want a Beretta 92FS consider this. It doesn't meet your "new" criteria, but the things are built like tanks and often more reliable used than some guns are new.

  3. Good to see this. Things haven't changed one iota since I was a T-38 IP 38 years ago! I always told my studs that if they weren't having fun in UPT they were in the wrong business. Stressful, yes, but fun, too!

UPT taught me the difference between fun and awesome. During the entire UPT experience I could probably count on both hands the times I actually had "fun", and it was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life. However, I didn't ever go more than a few days without experiencing something that was just awesome. For me "fun" requires a level of relaxation during the awesome stuff that UPT rarely allows (mostly due to death avoidance).

  4. 1. It's cool to want a fighter or even a specific plane. But DO NOT badmouth other planes even jokingly as you have no credibility at all yet. If you get asked what you want to fly by an IP, answer straight and then ask them about their plane. Get as much knowledge as possible and you might surprise yourself.

    2. It's not about being better than the other studs, it's about maximizing your own performance. On drop night, you will basically know what everybody wants. And, every list will be different. After a year studying together, flying form together, sharing multiple failures, and growing as aviators you will cheer with them or shed a tear with them. Don't make the mistake of thinking that winning the competition for a specific aircraft means beating your bros.

    3. When it comes time for the drop, ask for what you think you want but love whatever you get. There are serious pros and cons associated with every single assignment out of UPT. Enjoy UPT while you're there, but the best thing you can do is leave with a set of wings and a good attitude.

  5. Range reports to follow.

As promised, I just got back from the range and had a great time.

The Stevens 200 in .270 is a respectable shooter. It was laser-boresighted to a Bushnell Banner 4x32. The boresight was off a full 22" at 100yds so I had to realign the scope. Once properly sighted, I was able to get 1.5" groups from a benchrest (no vise) at 100yds on the bullseye with 150gr factory loads. That's about the accuracy I hoped for. Recoil was manageable. No FTF or FTL. Loading the blind-box mag was a little quirky, but I got the hang of it. Overall I'm satisfied with this as a hunting gun.

As far as the Thompson Center hot shot... No gun this small and light should shoot this good. With the cheap Walmart Federal ammo and iron sights (ghost ring) I was able to get sub-moa groups offhand at 25yds and moa benchrest at 100yds. At 25yds it would rip a ragged hole in the bullseye shot after shot. It is very diminutive feeling at 3lbs and 30" and the stock is very plasticky. But, the action locks up tight and the sights were dead-on from the factory. My 7 year old son had no problems shooting it and was getting bullets on the paper at 25yds. It is excellent for teaching gun safety with the single shot breech loading and the transfer bar safety under the hammer. IMNSHO I think this would make an exceptional survival/squirrel/rabbit gun (for adults), especially if they made it a takedown with a quick-release hinge pin and lengthened the stock a few inches.

  6. New gun day...

Academy had Savage-stevens 200's in .270 on sale for $179 so I jumped. I've been looking for a good hunting rifle for some time and couldn't be more excited. It has the same action, receiver, barrel, etc. as the old Savage 110. It doesn't have accutrigger, but the trigger breaks clean and crisp at 2.5 lbs with no creep. The stock is ugly but pillar bedded and the barrel is free-floating. I also bought the Nikon 3-9x40 on sale for $99 to go with it, but the tube is too short for the action. I will say the guys working at Academy were complete idiots. Worst gun-buying experience I've had and if it wasn't for the incredible price I would have walked away.

I also bought my son his first rifle, a Thompson Center Hot Shot .22lr. It's a single-shot break barrel based on the T/C pro hunter rifles. Very nicely constructed gun, locks up tight, and has an aperture sight for teaching the kids. It also has an expanding stock (like the mossy 500's) to grow with the kids. It's only 30" and 3lbs. I think it might actually make a nice backpacking/squirrel gun...

  7. Link to full article

Short version is trailer fire kills two. Police don't know how or when it happened but are calling investigation complete. Love the quote from a small town Texas sheriff...

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the nature of the fire is accidental. No further investigation will be performed, said Kenny Lemons, Clay County Sheriff.
Move along, nothing to see here.
  8. I think what he's saying is his BAH at Clovis will be $300 less than his current BAH while a similar house in Clovis will run $500 more than what he's currently paying. So a net loss of $800? That sucks!

    Affirm.

At least we have a few months until the move so we're thinking we'll build. It will actually be cheaper than buying one of the inflated established properties.

  9. So, the new BAH rates for 2011 came out (STS) today. I'm moving to Clovis in a few months and guess what, the BAH for my paygrade dropped by $70 from CY10-CY11. The strange thing about that is house prices in Clovis have skyrocketed since the AFSOC takeover (almost double vs a few years ago in Clovis). So a similar house in Clovis to the one I'm in will cost $500 more per month than the one I'm currently in and I'm going to lose $300 per month in BAH. :bash::bash: :bash:

  10. There's nothing like having the whole (stateside) base wearing reflective belts 24/7 so we can "reflect" on alcohol awareness after our most recent DUI. Somebody craps their pants and now we all have to wear diapers.

At least they went with the belts instead of the diapers. They could have decided on that option so people would think about alcohol awareness and were not going "toilet" it happen again...

  11. So, I can confirm that Ft Hood sells guns; but can we get a confirmation for every other location listed above, or add any that may not be included?

    Cheers! M2

    Tinker does.

  12. Anyone know if you can use this discount if you're headed overseas on orders to have a car ready when you get there? I've got orders to Ramstein, and i"d like to try and get the car ordered, and maybe ready to pickup there when I get in, but still get the discount.

Yes. People did it all the time with BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche.

  13. Shoe clerk buffoonery today. So the base we're at has a room at the gym with a play area for kids and workout stuff for their parents. My wife took our kids to the gym to play while she worked on the equipment. Our youngest slept in her carseat by my wife while the others played in the play area.

Partway through my wife's workout, a female in a services shirt confronted her. She told my wife that kids have to be one year old and walking to be allowed on the premises of the gym. My wife was told to collect the children and leave immediately. When she asked about it, the shoe gave the classic answer "It's in the AFI, do I need to show you?" At this point, my wife walked away and left quietly.

Not sure if we're going to take this anywhere, but it sucks to be denied access to excellent facilities due to some presumed rule (or interpretation) when she was the only one working out in the kids room and there was zero safety threat. :bash:
