  1. EO 12564 https://www.archives.gov/federal-register/codification/executive-order/12564.html and the Bond amendment http://www.dss.mil/documents/pressroom/bond_amendment.pdf are against you.  Especially since the DEA still classifies it as controlled/illegal, regardless of state laws.  https://www.dea.gov/divisions/hq/2016/hq081116.shtml.

If you really want it, be prepared to work hard for a waiver.

I did come across belltype and they gave me a quote for the equipment but after repeated emails they won't quote me on the dies.  The equipment was about $3k but it's the dies that scare me.  I've found another site that makes leather nametags and according to their website they have a gazillion possible designs that can go on leather nametags.  I was wagging $75 per die and if this other company really had as many possibilities as they seem to indicate they'd have close to $10k in dies.  I was hoping there would be some way to etch the design in the leather with a laser and then spray the etched area remove a masking tap and achieve the same effect but I haven't had time to test this idea yet.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Yep.  You need to use laser foil.

Dave are you going to expand into any other products?  Trying to find some nylon strips with name and wings to put on my luggage and backpack.

We've made those before on my wife's machine out of those seatbelt luggage tags they sell at clothing sales.  Just names, but wings would be pretty easy to add.  I like the idea.  I'll bet I could convince her to make you one.

My 59 year old mom hasn’t had healthcare for a year. The premiums doubled last Jan and they couldn’t afford them along with the high out of pocket costs. So now she is uninsured and just pays the fine because it is less than the cost of one month of premiums. Now she is playing the odds that nothing serious will happen to her until she’s eligible for Medicare at 65 or something corrects the healthcare market.

2 same.  My mom was just told she needs skin cancer surgery, but that it could only be scheduled right after the first of the year.   Due to skyrocketing premiums and out of pocket costs, she had already cnx'd her plan effective the end of this month.  She's putting off the surgery until she turns 65 in June.  Our healthcare system is beyond reason and majorly in need of reform.

My favorite conspiracy theory (copyright: me): This why the Air Force's senior enlisted leaders are pushing for enlisted pilots. So a goddamn finance command chief can finally feel like they control Ops guys.

You mean like loads, sensors, BA, and gunners?

They say the E’s will be right out of basic and will not have a degree, and that when they are done, regardless of the outcome, they will go on to their previously assigned tech school. Because they just want to test their ability to do the program without having a degree.  Even if that is truly the legitimate reason for testing the E’s...why? We don’t have a shortage of degreed folks wanting to apply to UPT, applicants far exceed slots. So....why?

So, train pilots and then send them to tech school to finish out their 4-6 year enlistment?

I used a place down near Hurlburt recently for a custom patch project and in the Quick/Good/Cheap product triumvirate, they nailed quick and cheap. Quality however...

I swear, a vet who can get his hands on the right machines, design a website, market to the right folks and have some business sense could clean up all these other jokers out there right now...just remember to pay your taxes!

LOL.  I bought my wife a Bernina embroidery machine a few years ago for anniversary.  She's done some great patch work for me over the years.

Got it passed along from a buddy,

    OBOGS Failure/Physiological Symptoms

GREEN RING - PULL (AS REQUIRED)(BOTH)

DESCENT BELOW 10,000 FEET MSL - INITIATE

DISCONNECT MAIN OXYGEN SUPPLY HOSE FROM CRU-60/P

Will be interested to see down the line what the ultimate cause of all this is with OBOGS systems.

That's a lot of writing, and quite a bit of detail for a BF.  Surprised it's not a little more student(and hypoxia)-proof...

    Non-fighter pilot asking:

Is it the fighter's EM that matters more now or the EM of the weapon that really matters?  With late generation AAMs and the capabilities of the cueing sensors (AESA radar, JHMCS, etc...) is that really the EM battle that matters more now?

    Off+boresight+missile.png

Just from this open source graphic of a Python 4's capabilities, it seems to me that a fighter still needs maneuverability but with the capability of the missiles/sensors, I would really want the capability to defend/disengage/countermeasure and reposition for round 2.

That defensive move might be a high g turn or from my perspective it would probably be better to have really good transonic acceleration to separate from the bandit and his weapon while giving me time, distance and energy to fix the glitch..

I'd recommend shooting first.  And not missing.

I’m not an Academy grad but what “if” the academy became a place that groomed pilots. I’m talking 69%+ get an aviation sciences major, full up flight education like an Embry riddle flight program for the military.

Why are we giving free education to history majors who want to be finance officers?

If we're really trying to find a way to somehow skip phase II or III, why not just have qualified zoomies fly the T-6 during their Senior year at the academy, track select at graduation, and press?

Have to disagree, we don't need a flood of new pilots, in some ways that will make the situation worse.  The dismal and sinking retention rate means we will be short seasoned combat pilots.  The last thing we need is a flood of inexperienced greenhorns flying in combat.

I know what you are trying to say but you kind of sound like Big Blue when they say we are going to "grow our way out of this."

Yes. It blows me away that the aircrew crisis TF is trying all these accession experiments that will get people killed when the problem is retention.  The root cause of the retention problem is the credibility gap with leadership and personnel management (A1/AFPC).  Not the only problem, but it's the most painful for them to address.

Last point, if you seriously think we are investing way too much effort/money into "other/possible war" stuff, you are woefully uninformed about what's out there.  We'd be fools to not do what we're doing right now, at least in a general sense (there are million things that could be done better, but the big picture approach/understanding and prioritization of the threat is not necessarily wrong).

Spot on.  There's incredible deterrent value in readiness.  Readiness starts very early, and it includes acquisition priorities.

Same question that's been asked, but has anyone heard/know of someone who has successfully stayed off base at Holloman? I've had my fill of roach hotel lodging, looking to not stay in a room with shitty a/c in the New Mexico summer.

The new update to the JTR (as of 1 Nov) says "1. A DoD Service member must use available Government quarters if ordered to a U.S. installation" and "a Service member is sent on TDY to a U.S. installation and the Government quarters on that installation (not nearby) are adequate and available, he or she is required to use Government quarters." Which seems pretty cut and dry, but follows up with "adequate Government quarters are available on the U.S. installation to which a Service member is assigned TDY, but the Service member chooses to use other lodging, the Service member is limited to the reimbursement cost of Government quarters on the assigned TDY installation n (44 Comp. Gen. 626 (1965))."  The quoted file there is a bunch of legalese that my pilot brain can't quite decipher, maybe someone is smarter than I am?

Regardless, how I read that is I am required to stay on base, or only be reimbursed for the cost of gov quarters (standard $60/day), which is how it's been forever. A guy in my squadron who just left for Holloman supposedly got a welcome letter from their CC saying they have to stay on base regardless, but I'm assuming the JTR still trumps.

As a captain headed to my last assignment before I'm allowed to punch, I'm willing to press to test a bit, but wondered if anyone had recently been successful.

Your commander can lawfully order you to stay on base.
