Some follow-ups, if I may.  And not arguing, simply don't know...

Is the mini going to be big/enough to display enough info at a size an old guy can read without constant sizing actions, especially as a student learning instruments? (Hopefully, that made sense).

From my days 30 years ago, the fit then in a 152/172 was tight, esp I'm still as tall (6'5"), but 60 lbs heavier (230).  Room for any of these as a kneeboard kind of a thing (especially a bigger one like the Pro) or a suction cup on a window?

Roger on the Bose A20s.  They are proud of their prices, aren't they?

I’m 69”s tall so we’re a little different in size, but I’ve used both the regular IPad and the mini. Standard Ipad was good for not having to zoom in so much, but the size was cumbersome in a 152/172.  Especially if you mounted it on a suction cup (could cover a 1/4 of a window) and that’s why I chose the mini. You do need to zoom in on the mini, but it’s been best for me when going from a 172, cub, baron, king air, t-38, etc.

Bose does cost you an arm and a leg, but they’re worth it. Another option would be the light speed Sierra. Used them before and they were great.

It amazes me how much some professional pilots (mil and civ) can lack humility/scoff at other types of flying or specific training. I have a couple thousand hours in fighters, but landing a tail wheel the first couple flights felt like I might as well be back in UPT. It’s been fun as hell learning TW/GA aerobatics, and it has absolutely made me a better pilot overall. Every pilot should do it as soon as they can afford to.

I second your comment on the tail wheel. Your hours/experience is far beyond where I’m at right now, but I feel that I learned more about stick and rudder skills when getting my tail wheel endorsement.

On a positive note, the LAZ video video lead me to another video that could be a positive change.  I don't know much about this program, but if it can be expanded and works, let's hope it takes off.

    That kitten shirt...

  4. Like @moosepileit said. Another thing that helped me is I would sit down with a white board and break things down by drawing out each step. This simplified things for me and I would then piece them together. CAP isn’t a bad thing as it lets you fly with the more experienced IPs. However, you don’t want stay there forever. Also, don’t be afraid to speak to your Flt/CC if you’re not meshing with an IP and you learn more from another. I was on CAP in 38s and learned a lot from my designated IPS.

  5. I'm a reserve student on TDY for IFF and trying to get some information about receiving full per diem. Received my first payment and I didn't receive full per diem after providing an MFR; Shocking.... So, I completed the missed meals form 2282 in order to get full per diem, but I was just informed not to list the weekend dates? From what I could find, the JTR indicates per diem is a daily rate, so I should receive full per diem (once approved) for all days correct? Thanks.

If I look back on it 30 years past, I’d like to say UPT was awesome, but I can’t, because I made a promise to myself during UPT. You see, a Colonel came to visit our class (some presentation or sumtin’) and he told us how lucky we were to be having so much fun and that UPT was the best year of our lives, etc.  I promised myself that if I ever became a crusty old Colonel and got the chance to tell it like it was, I’d remember this moment as a 2Lt.  UPT sucks. I wanted to finish #1 and that meant studying my ass off and treating every day like it could be my last (because one bad week could show you the door).  I was one of he worst T-37 studs, and probably the best T-38 stud, so I saw the entire spectrum of good and bad days. Every day was a grind of fear, sarcasm, and ridicule!
Don’t get me wrong, there were some awesome times, and I remember them well. In fact they are the only real memories I have of UPT.  If it weren’t for that Colonel coming in and telling me how much fun I was having, I’d be writing a different post right now. But I can still hear 2Lt Rogair in my head, “This ing sucks”.

As a recent graduate, I can validate that this statement still holds true in 2020.

  7. Thread bump. Now in UPT and looking to see if anyone is selling their mess dress. 5’9” and 175lbs. 38-40 regular jacket, 32” waist, and 15-15.5” neck. Thanks.

Quick question. Anyone hear this no more formation landings in the Air Force any longer?

Haven’t heard anything in the UPT environment as I just did one yesterday.

Are you sure you can do that?  I've been told it could hurt your chances if you turn down a rated offer and then reapply for the next board.  Of course if this was an active duty board he is declining and then he applies to the Reserves that is a separate process with different recruiters (correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes you can. However, from what I read about 2 years back was that if you decline a position you can’t reapply and accept the same position you declined.

Don’t go active duty. Be a full time reservist or AGR. there’s literally not a single perk to active duty over that, it’s why big blue tries to hide them and downplay it.

👆 what @Hawg15 said. I’m extremely happy with staying Reserves and glad I didn’t go through with the switch; wouldn’t want it any other way.

  11. 2 of us showed up to UPT as unsponsored and looked at switching to Active. AFPC said there was a process currently being developed (October 2019) to allow this. AFI 36-2005 ch 6 explains that you can transfer from different branches.AFI36-2005%20Officer%20Accessions.pdf?ve

If age isn’t a factor and your open to flying to anything, you can decline the CSO position and reapply for the active board. Not sure how many times you can decline or how long you have to wait to reapply.

  12. Family and I will be moving to Luke in August for F-16 B course and we’re need of some information on the local area; housing, things to do/not do, etc. Big thing is trying to figure out if we should do base housing or rent else where. Thanks in advanced.

  13. I can speak about the unsponsored/FAIP situation as I was selected to be a FAIP, but found a unit at the same time. Going unsponsored is a great thing if you want to fly heavies and not concerned about location; you can always transfer units after 3 years. The FAIP portion is primarily for T-6s as an unsponsored person automatically tracks T-1s. However, there are times where they need T-38 FAIPs.

Simply put, the reserves need to provide instructors and you need to voice early on that you want to do it so the ball can get rolling. What will happen is you be an instructor for the reserve unit at your UPT base and will do that for 3-4 years active. In the last year of the full time orders you will begin rushing units and the liaison officer will help you find a home.
