  1. Spot on...I misinterpreted that as your typical "my life is so hard you can't hack it" post, most commonly seen in the UPT and IFS threads. You're right...it doesn't necessarily take smarts to do well in college, but it does take SA and work ethic.
  2. Oh, come on. OTS is a piece of cake (95% pass rate), UPT is a marathon, but isn't actually that difficult (>90% pass rate), and Big Blue is easy after surviving UPT. IFS is easy if you have 10 hours of flight experience...nothing in the AF is difficult until you become a Captain and go to SOS...
  3. It looks like all the Academy guys have the same advice: fix your shit. I get it, the Academy isn't easy, but all you have to do there is study and work out. I got a 3.0 freshman year (at a real college), due to music, sociology and English for similar reasons. At the time I blamed the professors, now I know o could have easily done better. I got smart and started picking the easiest professors (when able), working my ass off when not, and studying the syllabi like my life depended on it to know exactly what I was being graded on. If you can't figure out how to determine which professors are the easy ones, you are probably wasting your time on here. Writing very liberal papers and giving liberal speeches will help too. I ended up with a 3.59, which paired with 469 hours/CFI and a killer AFOQT got me selected on my second attempt. You might need to do better than that, since you're not going to have the hours (the biggest factor in my selection, IMO). Work is important, but school is your priority if you want to fly jets for cash.
  4. Airfield trans, right? Or in other words the dumbest people on the airfield (based off ASVAB scores, not trying to be offensive)
  5. Also...if you get a Glock, and have a buddy in Dover, see if they have any contacts. I've heard rumors or a dude selling Glocks cheap up there.
  6. I hate hate hate US Air/American. But since that's the gov contract for everywhere I go (often), I've got status and miles with them. So my favorite airline is the one I hate the most...
  7. TLDR: tried a bunch, bought the Shield Just bought my first concealable handgun, after shopping around quite a bit. I'm a 69" dude with med-small hands, for what it's worth (I sound like a men seeking men ad). Ruger LCP: way too small, can't hit anything past 10 yards and I hate the way it feels. Glock 26/27: perfect, but as a skinny guy the double stack grip is too, um, girthy to conceal. Glock 42/43 (the 43 is the same as the 42 but 9MM): same as the 26/27, but single stack. When Glock slimmed that part down, everything I loved about the feel went with it. Not a fan. Walter PPS: Runner up...I like the mag release, but the recoil is slightly worse than what I got: S&W M&P Shield 9: chose 9 over 40 due to cost of ammo and capacity. I love everything about this gun, grip, recoil, and reputation. The ONLY con I've found is that you can't field strip it without a screwdriver or a similar tool. There's a tiny lever inside the firing chamber that you have to move to take it apart. You can get it with/without safety and it includes 2 mags (8&7).
  8. Recruiters Assistance might be another...I used mine as a 2 LT not sure about doing it as a Capt/Maj type
  9. I signed up a few weeks ago and am awaiting my SCRA decision. Heard a rumor they're no longer doing that though...does anyone have any recent info?
  10. https://www.facebook.com/MichaelYonFanPage/posts/10153093048940665?comment_id=10153093909955665&notif_t=like Uh oh...the Facebook SIB is getting started (edited for brevity)
  11. I might be spending the next portion of my life at the Deid...I've heard a lot of the PT/belt buffoonery is in the past. Since I've gotten answers to all my real questions, here are a few vacation questions (I intend to enjoy this "deployment" as much as possible): 1. How easy is it to get a car/get off base? Is buying a beater car to share between a few "shop" members doable? 2. On a rare 2 days off, is it auth'd to spend the night at, say, the Hilton in Doha? 3. Are most 6-12 monthers in the BPC? All? 4. Is there really a Chipotle? 5. Can you drink off base? And yes, I know this isn't a real deployment...hence these questions. I'm already thinking of all the great bathroom sayings I can carve on the walls, until they tear them down. In retrospect, 1-2 might be OPSEC...PM and I'll send you a .mil.
  12. There's my point. You can't fix it, but if you want to try to fix it, work with your wings safety outreach to local FBOs. That's the only way the public will find out what goes on in the MOAs, and why they should be avoided. GA pilots (some, anyway) are experts at what they do. Nowhere in their training is the importance of observing MOA restrictions taught, unless they're trained by an ex-mil CFI. VFR flight following can be a hassle, and if you're not on that or IFR, nobody is there to tell you where not to go.
  13. As a military and former civilian IP, I can say the ignorance lies on both sides. That said, MOAs are not taught as no fly zones, just "avoid if it's convenient." After UPT, I couldn't believe all the stuff I got away with as a civilian knucklehead.
  14. Ever seen Charlie's War? I recommend finding 100 volunteers and 100 busses, and driving people who aren't likely to vote down to the primary in March. That, and get the word out at local bases and ROTC events. Also, go easy on the military experience...your page reads like an OPR a lot of bold claims but not much substance other than that you want to fix our country. Find out who supports your opponent and see if you can get their support. Good luck.
  15. Does anyone know if Citizen makes custom watches? $400 vs $4K
  16. Yes. Both times, I actually hadn't started to research refinancing until he called to let me know what his credit was up to. The lenders credit fluctuates daily, and depending on the day you enter a contract, you can gain or lose $1K from the previous day. It's crazy how much luck is involved.
  17. Crazy Carl (now of Columbus AND Oakland) will do it for a cool $500...one of several reasons I've never used him for any of my civilian stuff. Can anyone shed some light on approx what aero club instructors make/hr? Thinking about volunteering since it'd be fun, and wondering if they pay would be even more of an incentive.
  18. Thread bump: I've been to the one week safety course, and soon might have the option to either move up to wing safety (from the squadron) and go to the crash lab, or go to a different job (any job, not sure which one). I've heard mixed things about getting the so-called "safety stink" from the full course...two questions: 1. Does it really increase a rated guy's chance to deploy throughout his career? 2. Is there a benefit to having it when looking at the airlines/89th/Reserves that offsets #1? Of course, I probably don't have a choice...but let's pretend I do.
  19. I got 3.75% and $7.5K for my initial mortgage and 3.25% &$3.4K for my refinance last month. It depends on the rate, as the credit is basically negative points. In other words, if you took a higher rate (3.5 vs 3.25) you'd get cash. Or maybe you're taking a lower rate, but not getting the credit. We took 3.75 initially with the $7.5K but could have gotten 3.5 with no credit.
  20. Edited for CYA. Good advice though, read and heeded.
  21. Well said. I'm happy to be called ignorant and delusional all day by my peers on the internet, since it doesn't happen anywhere else. Based on the fact that we're both on baseops.net, HLF, I'd wager that we have had similar experiences and success in this world. By your definition, all of us religious folk have been able to do it while devoting part of our time to a delusion, while you've been freed from that burden. I'm not sure whether that supports your claim...
  22. Lots of correlations to pull from those statistics, which probably mean nothing. Just curious, what's the obesity level in MA vs LA? How about the number of African Americans? If you look that up, and then take those statistics literally, you'll find that minorities are fat, uneducated, and religious...and I think a few folks on here would have very strong opinions against that. There's nothing wrong in "clinging" to religion. You either believe something, or you don't. It worked out pretty well for the founding fathers.
  23. The older the _______, the more likely it is to crash, she said. "As the years go on, they get a lot more dangerous." "They need very special care," and _________ laws proscribe their ______ parameters. "You have to follow a special aging ________ protocol," Schiavo said. Think of all the possibilities.
