  1. Forgot about the 509th and wiki has the 29th as activated in '03. Unsat for SA & google skills is acknowledged.
Also good see another WO GO from the MAF, I've never heard of him but Smokey is obvious because he's in AMC. I will say there's a noticeable shift in training focus and top cover/enabling of the squadron WOs with the current leadership at McChord. Its also a bonus when your leadership is Airdrop Qual'd and can actively participate in large package exercises.
Also agreed on the Pheonix programs from the HQ AMC perspective, although I'm not seeing very many people interested in those programs and a lot fewer Phoenix Reach guys coming into our squadron (obviously anecdotal evidence).

C-130 WIC stood up in 1996 under the Combat Aerial Delivery School in Little Rock. Absorbed by AMWC around 1999. FWIW, Otey was MAC/AMC as well, and the LRF WG/CC before Smokey.

  2. Guys, this is easy from the AF perspective...if we start having a significant long-term problem with retention, we'll stop-loss in the near term and move to 15-yr commitments long term.  Take it to the bank.  And before you pilots start whining on this forum, you knew this would be a possibility when you signed on the bottom line.

The more of your friends that take the bonus, the longer we can put off S.L. and expanded commitments.

Typical--tactical solution to a strategic problem. You really don't get it, do you?

Fearmycessna, don't let all this get to you, merely par for the course given the material first posted.  But, the reality is the AF (like all branches of the armed forces) for the past 15+ years have been involved in COIN, low to mod intensity operations in AORs that in almost all respects are permissive, some SAFIREs and hits unfortunately but for the fixed wing world, air to air hasn't been a real concern.

This leads to the lived reality that for the most part we will likely be involved in long, slow grinding, intractable conflicts against enemies that have no army, air force, major infrastructure and in large part aided and abetted by civilian populations sympathetic (sometimes) to their causes by either religious, ethnic or racial connections that make doing what we usually do to achieve victory - drop a X-thousands of tons of iron on the right DMPIs destroying the IADS, the enemy's fielded forces and strategic infrastructure paving the way for the land forces to go in unharnessed by the enemy's air force and artillery and seize territory - very difficult or not able to accomplish.

We have to be prepared for Major Combat Operations against a peer or near peer adversary but that is unlikely, we are likely to be continued to be harassed by them (ref Russian intercepts of RC-135s and Navy ships) and we have to be able to effectively, efficiently and sustainably fight in conflicts that probably can't be won militarily.  Not glorious but challenging to figure out.

  4. I am in a similar situation. I am currently at age 32, working as a civilian electrical engineer with a TS clearance at an Air Force base that primarily maintains F-16’s and plans to acquire a large number of F-35’s in the next few years. I passed the MEPS physical and have taken the AFOQT (Pilot 78, Navigator 70), TBAS, ASVAB (91), and am in the process of accumulating flight hours and possibly obtaining a PPL.  Since my age is a big factor, what would be the fastest or most probable way to obtain training to fly a turbofan-powered aircraft with a thrust-to-weight ratio close to 1 in the front or back seat (CSO, WSO, pilot)?  I am open to any path or branch (OTS, ROTC, Air Force, Navy, Air Guard, etc).  Perhaps it’s possible to train as an enlisted RPA pilot then switch to manned aircraft, or go in as an engineer then switch to flight?  Who are the most important people to impress (other pilots, commanders, recruiters)?  I know UPT basics like the T-6 boldface, and some BFM (couters, turn-circle geometry, reversals).  I am more than willing to put in the work, I just want to know where to focus it, or which branch of service.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Style points for emailing 1FW/ALL with your question. ...that's one technique, I guess

    Serious?

  5. Not CPAP/OSA related, but RILO/MEB/C1 process for severe arthritis in my back took 15 months. Caveat: I was at 17 years when diagnosed, and I'm pretty sure my doc drug the process out to get me to 18/"sanctuary".
