  1. If the CSAF wants to know what's wrong with AF morale, camaraderie, and esprit-de-corps, he needs to look no further than his own Commanders. The subject is trivial at face-value (pun intended), but telling of underlying issues. I haven't seen any evidence of MAJCOM/CCs coming out against the CSAF's Mustache March, but WHY would any GO publicly go against the CSAF?

    Meanwhile...

The CSAF’s “March Mustache Challenge” will not be embraced at USAFA. The cadets WILL NOT be participating, and all permanent party have been reminded that we are about standards and nothing in this challenge will ask us or allow us to break those standards. Apparently a number of MAJCOM commanders have come out and specifically said, “Our command is not participating.”

  2. Saw this on a different forum regarding TERA:

"Someone in my chain called AFPC on my behalf. It appears that the AF wasn't exactly ready to execute and Air Staff has instructed them to hold the applications. Once Air Staff gives them the order they will process all the allocations at once. If your status is on hold for batch processing your application has been reviewed and is just waiting for the execution order from staff."

This is a ING JOKE.. or a travesty,

  3. ZB, how else would you propose we strat people? Doesn't a senior rater know better who the bottom-rung officers are than a random board member?

I'd say, "no." For the majority of officers, the senior rater has about as much understanding as a random board member. Thus, they have to use discriminators like SOS in-res, AAD, Wing Holiday party planner, etc etc etc. From my experience, even the Group CC doesn't have a clear picture of all the officers in their group, depending on the size. I know for certain in my Ops Group, one of the SQ/CCs was pushing for CGO Group strats for officers that would be in the bottom third to bottom quarter in my current squadron. Yes--Group Strats for officers who wouldn't sniff a top 50% squadron strat in another squadron in the same Ops Group. The system is broken, which is what Zach Braff was hinting. IMO, strats should stop at the SQ level, because at the Group level and higher, you are simply comparing apples and oranges.

  4. Personally, I'd keep my senior wartime experience and dump the noobs who didn't deploy because they didn't have to or because they avoided it...but that's just me. I realize it is a little more complicated than that.

Yes, but then they are backfilled by more noobs from tech school who have never deployed and you're back in the same situation. Why not throttle back on accessions temporarily?

  5. Great response, until this: "Putting Congress back in control of America's purse strings ensures that we will be able to take care of the men and women in our armed forces."

Congress is the reason multiple useless bases remain open that the DOD wants to close. . . and then there's the RQ-4.

  6. I'm one of the 157 Majors that was not continued in 2011. Currently a Lt Col going on over 2 years of AD orders in the Guard. 2 to go until AD retirement. Figure my wife and I (DINKs) have about $550k+ between stocks, mutual funds, IRAs (both Roth and traditional), 401ks, checking, home equity, and paid off cars (the invol sep pay helped there). My biggest problem is that I have $100k in checking. Need to figure out what to do with it. Cause its not doing me any good there.

Glad that worked out for you!

  7. Cool discussion. I enjoy learning from you guys. I've contributed to the TSP and maxed my IRA since paycheck #1 in the AF. I'm 33 with $200,000 in IRA, TSP, and cash. It would have been about double that, but I got divorced and split all assets including $84,000 in cash and sold my house 18 months ago for $100,000 less than it's worth now. Bummer.

  8. Sure, when the plane's broke. Isn't that why the Academy has a jump team, to get them ready for ejection seat aircraft? No, I'm pretty sure the Academy jump school exists to provide grads with the USAFA Grad Badge (jump wings) so you can readily identify them once they are on AD.

    Academy pledge pin.
