  1. I did some searching for this subject and was unable to find anything related for dependents so I figured I would see if anyone on here had info on getting contact lens replacements for my wife. We just recently got her enrolled in Tricare Prime and found out that they will only cover the visits to the optometrist but not glasses or lenses. Awesome. Anyone know of any places to get contacts that isn't going to charge me an arm & leg for them or have any experience with this stuff?
  2. Holy Shit!! Zombies and Raptors! What if it's real? I knew there was a reason that I get that weird uneasy feeling every time that I am in Austin. At least M2 will get use of his stockpile of ammunition in his basement. FYI... If anyone here feels the need to alert their neighborhoods of the ensuing rapture or just for some good old fashioned fun, here are the instructions that are easy enough to follow that a caveman can do it! 3. Hey dude, go ahead and believe whatever blows your skirt up. Just about every perception you posted about the Nav career field was arrogant as well as false. You might as well have just gone and asked somebody at the MPF what they thought of the career field and what it's like to be an operational nav. There are plenty of navs/EWOs/WSOs on this forum that would take a great deal of offense to what you said. True, on some airframes a Nav may not be an integral part as they used to be due to advances in GPS, etc (see: -135 variants, AWACS, etc) but there are other variants where a good nav will be worth his weight in gold for low level drops and others. The career choice is going to be what you decide to make of it for yourself. If you wanna go in to PCola with a piss poor attitude and feel like a second class citizen and let your peers know that you are going to get eaten alive. There is always going to be rivalries between AFSCs and even airframes. $hit dude, ask half of the pilots on this forum and they will tell you that there are "second class pilots" in the aviation community. Ask those "second class pilots" of their perception and they will tell you it's a bunch of bull$hit. Moral of the story - do some research before you come and bash the career field before you talk to dudes that actually do the job. I got my nav slot and was a little bitter for a while but when I pin my wings on here in a couple months and my sentiments will be different. Oh - and at least you aren't an ABM.... no offense to them but ask some of those dudes what their perceptions are...
  4. So M2 I have gotta know.... Are you getting a commission yet from Springfield because of the influx of XD purchases to military members? If not, maybe you should look in to that or getting your FFL and seeing if baseops.net will allow your banner ad to "M2's nothin' but XD's Emporium"
  5. I got the .40 USP Compact a few years back and absolutely love it. Sure is is a little bit pricey compared to an XD or even a Sig or Glock but I have been very satisfied with it since I have had it. It conceals nicely and fits my hand extremely well and even can be shot by my wife pretty easily. The only negative thing that I have had with it is that it gets a little picky with the ammo that I have put through it, I wouldn't recommend getting re-loads from the gunshow to take to the range. Let me know if you have any other questions about it
  6. Airbus has really got a handle on this whole photoshop thing, they must be saving bundles on that stuff using 130 pics in place of their own
  7. They take a lot. I didn't keep count, but I think it was 8-10ish so thats gonna suck as well as the restrictions for fasting for 12 hours are still in place, at least for my FC1 that they did at Buckley in CO. Just hope that you get a hot nurse to keep you distracted while they poke you (sts).
  8. Visit My Website Here Here brothers. RIP Maj Funk and Lt Littler.
  9. 3. The stud was a helluva guy that was the embodiment of the warrior ethos that we can all strive to hold dear. Hear hear.
  10. As of now, the dorms are not anywhere near being full. I am sure it will vary a bit from now until you class up but to live off base the only exception is to be married. I am engaged and can't even live of base until 30 days before the wedding.
  11. It vas a great success... (think Kazakh accent...) Pentagon: Satellite hit a success By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer 2 hours, 39 minutes ago The Pentagon said Monday it has a "high degree of confidence" that the missile fired at a dead U.S. spy satellite in space destroyed the satellite's fuel tank as planned. In its most definitive statement yet on the outcome of last Wednesday's shootdown over the Pacific, the Pentagon said that based on debris analysis it is clear that the Navy missile destroyed the fuel tank, "reducing, if not eliminating, the risk to people on Earth from the hazardous chemical." The tank had 1,000 pounds of hydrazine, a toxic substance that U.S. government officials believed posed a potential health hazard to humans if the satellite had descended to Earth on its own. The presence of the hydrazine was cited by U.S. officials as the main reason to shoot down the satellite — described as the size of a school bus — which would otherwise have fallen out of orbit on its own in early March. The satellite lost power shortly after reaching its initial orbit in December 2006. Pentagon officials had said almost immediately after the shootdown by a missile fired from the USS Lake Erie that it appeared the tank had been hit squarely, but they carried out further analysis before reaching a final conclusion. As of Monday there had been no reports of debris landing on Earth, and it is unlikely any will remain intact to impact the ground, the Pentagon statement said. "By all accounts this was a successful mission," Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in the Pentagon statement Monday. "From the debris analysis, we have a high degree of confidence the satellite's fuel tank was destroyed and the hydrazine has been dissipated." The Pentagon statement said a space operations center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., is tracking fewer than 3,000 pieces of satellite debris, all smaller than a football.
  12. How many vipers are we going to have to "scramble" for this? The damn aliens are attacking again...
  13. Does anyone else find it kind of funny that Lalia Ali is bigger than most of the competitors?
  14. Ha, most of them are really cool, but a few of them will straight kick your a$$ if you mess with them or their equiptment. The nice ones might let you keep some of the gear (within reason, i.e. gloves, etc) others may make you clean it with alcohol swabs just to make you watch them throw it away in front of you afterwards
  15. Ya, after re-reading my post it is kinda confusing. Basically, the route that he has been told that he will need to take is to go get his med license, practice some sort of medicine for the AF for a while to get some credibility/recommendations/experience under his belt and then essentially compete to get in to the field that he wants because from the information available to him, it is just about impossible to get in to a specialized field such as radiology right off the bat for to AF.
  16. You don't need it coming out of ROTC but depending on where you end up and what you are working on, they may bump your clearance. As far as I know and talkng to my buddies that are future and current maintainers they are good to go with their secret
  17. I was hoping any flight docs out there could fill me in a little bit about the process of transitioning from being a flight doc or a general internist to a specialy in the AF such as a Diagnostice Radiologist. My brother is a soph in ROTC and wants to pursue something like this but wants to get more info before he goes to Field Training and incurs a commitment to the AF and find out that its something that he can't pursue after all. We really don't have any med groups in CO that have specialties such as that so if anyone else has any ideas of med groups that he could get in touch with would be great as well. Thanks! also, sorry for an grammaical errors and the like... I am not exactly "hip" to you fancy med guys' lingo...
  18. Ya, like M2 said, unless there is an "official" paper trail that followed your free music search infractions, there isn't much of a chance that they would really look in to it and/or care. Now if you were to bring it up in an interview, that would raise some questions for them but I wouldn't really think that it would prevent you from getting through the process. On that note, some of the things that they really harp on are your financial history/debts/etc. They have decided that things such as that show a lot about one's history. I guess in some way they can, but once again, they really start digging once you start mentioning things like that. As much as this is a personal history test, it is a personal character test as well
  19. I have yet to hear of them hooking anyone up to a lie detector test... The folks doing the interviews are experienced enough and have done enough research on you that they will get you backed in to a corner quicker than you could imagine. They basically are human polygraphs...
  20. As far as clearances go, all officers are required to have at least a secret clearance. Everyone on contract prior to FT has a scholarship is on contract has to get. Otherwise, after FT when you return and complete all of your contract stuff, oath of enlistment, etc you send in your packet for Secret. As far as secret goes, out of ROTC pretty much the only people that get it are Pilot, Nav and ABM selects as well as Intel students. You submit your packet for that and begin the application/interview process (which is a pain in the a$$) as soon as you are awarded a slot. I started mine last march/april and they aren't expecting it to be completed basically until I commission in May. Obviously, though, you will know much sooner if you are "red flagged" for any reason and won't be given a TS clearance. In that case, your slot for whatever is pulled, you might get a chance to commission as something else, and might be considered for disenrollment from the program. Hope this helps.
  21. My buddy just notified me that this story is erroneous, but I think that he has just blocked all fo the good details from his memory... I was lucky enough to have to stay in the same room that night...
  22. Me and my buddies got the chance to go down to Luke to sandbag some rides in Vipers and my buddy and I got lucky enough to bag some night rides doing pretty basic range work with NVGs and all that good stuff. The pilots made sure to tell us to eat before we go so my buddy being the genius that he is decided to go to Subway and get a foot long loaded with everything you can think of about an hour before we stepped. 15 min in to the flight, straight and level, he probably got disorientated by the NVGs or something but he yaks it all up. He was smart enough to keep a puke bag close to him in the belly of his G-suit, but the retard put it in upside down. He pulls it out to try and utilize it only to puke all over his front side, in his mask, all over his gear and the seat. Went the rest of the flight, didn't tell the pilot and didn't even tell the crew chief once they got back. The next morning we showed up for the brief for our next flight (after enough crew rest of course...) and the whole squadron just about wanted to kick his a$$, especially the life support folks when he turned his gear back in. Priceless.
  23. For my $.02, there are a lot of different things that you can think about before buying a ring that were very helpful. First off, I would never go through a big chain jewelry store. Like a lot of people have said, they are notorious for jacking their prices up sky high and you really don't get what you pay for. I was lucky enough to have my fiance's uncle be in the business so I was able to deal with him at the small store that he works at. Truth be told, you are going to pay about the same for your diamond just from just about any loose stone dealer. The jewelers don't make their money off of the stone, but rather the setting that it goes in. On that note, look at the wear and tear that the ring is going to get. If your girlfriend has a job that requires any lifting or a lot of work with her hands or if she is going to be wearing it 24/7, look at a metal that is going to stand up to it. Platinum holds a status with it, but in all reality it wears quite a bit worse than gold or white gold, discolors, flattens on the bottom side, etc. Gold or white gold is going to be a lot cheaper. 24k, 18k, 14k all have different price tags, but in all reality 14k is going to be the most durable because of the different metals used to make it and at the end of the day... It looks almost identical to the rest of the white metals used to make rings... As far as the style goes, many smaller stores will be able to custom make a ring for you based on other designs. I found a style from a popular designer in Denver, took it to my jeweler and they were able to make it for 1/4 of the price with a bigger diamond in just a couple of weeks. Once again, just my $.02...
